On the Bandstand: April 5, 2015 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Keep up with us via Facebook, the blog here, or our main website, or Twitter and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

This week’s show marked the centennial of Billie Holiday’s birth. Vocalist Nona Hendryx was one of the people featured on the show and is appearing at Harlem Stage on April 30 and May 1 in “Parallel Lives: Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf.” Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is also a visual artist and has an exhibit of his painted sticks at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art in downtown Newark NJ until May 21st.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be at Zinc Bar on April 8th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at City Winery on April 9 and at the Rainbow Room on the 13th with the After Midnight Orchestra.

Pianist Harold Mabern’s trio celebrates the release of their Afro Blue CD at Smoke on April 10-12th.

Vibraphonist Roy Ayers is at Iridium on April 17-18.

Low brass specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on April 18th.

Arts for Art’s monthlong “Our Earth/Our World” festival of musicians, poets, and visual artists continues at at Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side.

WBAI Radio is a media sponsor of Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s month-long jazz festival from April 17-May 17 at various Brooklyn locations.

He’ll be having a book party later this fall for Branches of the Tree of Life: The Collected Poems of Abiodun Oyewole 1969-2013, which has just been released by 2Leaf Press. Ask for it at your bookseller of choice. We’ll pass event info on when we get a firm date. Meanwhile, we have other listings for you if you want to catch music this week.

Also at the Blue Note from September 9th to 14th is an all star line-up of saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, pianist Geri Allen, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, who are gathering for a live album recording session with Odean Pope!

Bassist Christian McBride leads a trio at Birdland from September 9th to 13th.

Legendary drummer Roy Haynes brings his Fountain of Youth band to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from September 11th to 14th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under saxophonist Marshall Allen’s direction flies in from Saturn to land at Roulette in Brooklyn on September 12th.

Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to the Jazz Standard with a trio from September 12th to 14th.

Vocalist and vibraphonist Roy Ayers will be at the First Annual Spirit and Harmony Festival at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens on September 13th.

On the Bandstand: August 19, 2013 edition

Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new feature, The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. Here are the listings from tonight’s show on WBAI Radio that featured an interview with master drummer and teacher Michael Carvin.

There are no upcoming shows for tonight’s guest, Michael Carvin, but keep an eye on his website for shows in the late fall and a CD release scheduled for early 2014.

No Suga’ guests upcoming at Jazzmobile, but you should check out the full schedule of free concerts that runs through the end of the month.

We have a few shows coming up this week as summer winds down.

The Billy Hart Quartet will be at NYC’s Birdland from August 20-24.

Drummer Kim Thompson will be leading a group at Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on Saturday August 24th as part of the annual Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. Saturday’s set runs from 3-7 PM and also has performances by Kenny Garrett, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and Jaleel Shaw. The festival runs from the Friday to Sunday, the 23rd to 25th at Garvey and Tompkins Square Parks and has a performance by Jimmy Heath. All for free! Kim Thompson will also be part of a discussion of the film The Girls in the Band about female jazz and big band instrumentalists at the New School’s Jazz and Performance space on August 22nd from 6:30-8:30 as part of the Parker Jazz Festival. Details at the City Parks Foundation’s website.

Suga’ guest and host of our special “The Journey”, Bobby Sanabria, will be appearing with Quarteto Ache at Newport Tower in Jersey City, NJ for a lunchtime concert from 12-2 PM on August 21. He’ll also be appearing with Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends Big Band for a free concert as part of the Summerstage series on August 29 at 7 PM.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin will appear one night only at the Blue Note on Monday August 26th.

Roy Ayers finishes the rest of the week at the Blue Note, from August 27 to 31st.

Bassist Charnett Moffett will lead his “Spirit of Sound” ensemble one night only at the Jazz Standard with 7:30 and 9:30 shows on Tuesday August 27th with (fellow Will Calhoun collaborator) pianist Marc Cary.

Looking further ahead, last show’s guest drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts will appear at the Vanguard with his Quartet from September 3rd through the 8th.

Looking much further ahead, organist (and Dr. Lonnie Smith student) Akiko Tsuruga and her Trio will be appearing at the Garage on September 28th.
