This week’s guest is bassist Melvin Gibbs. You can catch him at at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on February 16 or The Stone on February 18 with with drummer JT Lewis and Harriet Tubman. Now let’s get to our music listings.

Bassist Mimi Jones hosts a jam session in the late set at Smoke on January 23rd and 30th. You can also catch her leading her own sextet at Monmouth University in New Jersey on February 4th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on the 18th.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun has a CD release event for his Elvin Jones tribute at the Blue Note from the 24-26. Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane joins Calhoun as special guest on the 24th.

Drummer Andrew Cyrille is at the Whitney Museum on January 27th for the Sound and Colors studio session.

Master drummer Michael Carvin is at St. Peter’s Church as part of a musical tribute to the late vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson on the 28th.

Tubist Howard Johnson is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem for a 75th birthday performance on January 29th.

Bassist Christian McBride is also at the Jazz Museum to talk about his recording career for part 1 of the Session Stories on January 31st.

Vocalist Carmen Lundy is at Birdland from January 31-February 4 2017.

John Medeski has a residency at The Stone from January 31-February 5 2017.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theatre on February 4 as part of the Family Concert series: Who is Louis Armstrong?

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at Sunny’s in Red Hook Brooklyn on February 9th.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun’s gallery exhibit of his visual art collaboration Aza is on view at the Bronx Music Heritage Center through February 11. We reviewed the show earlier this year.

Vocalist Kurt Elling is with saxophonist Branford Marsalis’s quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater on the 20-21st.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in The Bronx with Larry Harlow on the 21st.

Not a Police State” at the Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side. Poet
Jesus Papoleto Melendez, bassist William Parker, drummer Hamid Drake, drummer/percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett’s AfroHORN, and dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker are just a few of the many involved. See the full schedule of 65 performances at their website.

This week’s show concludes our 2017 2017 Winter Jazz Fest coverage with return visits by low brass specialist Joe Daley and Ruth Cameron, Charlie Haden’s widow and producer of several Haden albums. The Liberation Music Orchestra closes the Winter Jazz Fest on Tuesday January 10 at Le Poisson Rouge with pianist Geri Allen as a special guest. Ruth Cameron will be part of a panel discussion right before the show in the same location. Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 21st. You can see our review of the Winter Jazz Fest right here later this week. Now on to the rest of the week’s events.

We’re off this week, but head on over to our archives for last week’s show with drummer/percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett and a quick discussion with trombonist Craig Harris and nearly 7 years of archived shows. Catlett and Harris are both at this year’s 2017 Winter Jazz Fest, which is the big news this week. You can see Harris lead his “Breathe” composition on the first marathon night of music on January 6th at the New School’s Tishman Auditorium. Catlett leads AfroHORN on the second marathon night at Zinc Bar on the 7th and later in the month at Clemente Soto Velez Center on the 19th. We recommend getting to Zinc Bar extremely early for the Catlett show and we’re told that WJF tickets are selling out fast. Check back on Monday for our annual in-depth Cheat Sheet festival preview! The annual Winter Jazz Fest blows through town from January 5-10. We already mentioned Francisco Mora Catlett and AfroHORN and Craig Harris’s “Breathe”. Other festival highlights include an opening concert by saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders on the 5th, a closing performance by the Liberation Music Orchestra led by pianist Geri Allen on the 10th as a tribute to the late bassist Charlie Haden, and two marathon nights of music on the 7th and 8th. Drummer Andrew Cyrille is artist in residence and the festival theme is social justice. There are way too many former show guests there to mention, the full schedule is already up and we’ll have our own annual Cheat Sheet festival guide up right here on Monday January 2nd.

Finally, Guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area for a series of shows with bassist Ron Carter. The duo are at Norwalk CT’s Infinity Hall on April 20-21, Cape May NJ’s Exit Zero Jazz Fest on the 23rd, and Newton NJ’s Newton Theater on the 24th.
 
Also at Exit Zero is vocalist René Marie, who takes the stage on the 23rd.

Pianist Vijay Iyer has a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) until March 31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.
 
Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the the NYPL’s Schomburg Center for a Women’s History Month jazz program on the 21st and Toshi Reagon wraps up the the series on the 28th. Tune in to our March 20th show on WBAI for a ticket giveaway for both shows!

We return to the air this week with our final preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest featuring guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer!. You can see him on January 15 the New School University’s auditorium as part of the the Winter Jazz Festival. Now let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.
 
Pianist Vijay Iyer is at The Stone on the 13th with Matana Roberts and also leads a trio at this year’s Winter Jazz Fest.
 
Guitarist Julian Lage is at Cornelia Street Café on the 13th and at the Winter Jazz Fest’s closing event on the 17th.
 
Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet at Smoke from January 13-14.
 
Also at Smoke is saxophonist Billy Harper, who leads a quintet from the 15-17.
 
Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads a trio at BAM Café from January 13-15.
 
Vocalist Kurt Elling is at Birdland performing songs from his Passion World release from January 13-16.
 
Saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the new Cassandra’s Jazz Club and Gallery in Harlem from January 13-16 and 22-23rd.
 
Vocalists Lizz Wright and Dee Dee Bridgewater are at BB King’s on January 15.
 
Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 16th.
 
The Harlem Jazz Parlor Festival hosts trombonist Craig Harris on January 16 and low brass specialist Joe Daley on the 18.
 
Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane will be at the John Coltrane House in Dix Hills, LI on the 20th.
 
Vocalist René Marie is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from January 21-24.
 
Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on the 25 with legendary pianist McCoy Tyner. They’re also there on February 1, 15, and March 1. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch one of these dates and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s band in action.
 
Also at the Blue Note is legendary drummer Roy Haynes from January 26-27.
 
Drummer Craig Haynes has an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign to support making a CD and DVD of his band’s performance at the 2016 Dakar Goree Jazz Festival.

Annual Vision Fest producers Arts for Art’s nearly monthlong “Justice is Compassion” festival continues at Clemente Soto Velez Center until January 24 with drummer Hamid Drake, dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker, bassist William Parker and many more.
 
The annual Winter Jazz Fest blows back into town this week from the 13-17 with so many past, present (and future) Suga’ guests that it needs its own coverage. Head on over to our annual cheat sheet for a full preview.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on December 27th with another preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest. Pianist and vocalist Diane Schuur is at Iridium for a Frank Sinatra centennial celebration from the 26-28.
 
Guitarist Marc Ribot is at The Stone with John Zorn on the 29th.
 
Trombonist Craig Harris is at Sistas’ Place on New Year’s Eve.
 
Saxophonist Lou Donaldson leads a quartet the Jazz Standard from January 1-3.
