On The Bandstand: April 9, 2017 Edition

Former Suga’ guests vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, bassist Dave Holland, and organist Dr. Lonnie Smith are among the 2017 class of NEA Jazz Masters! Although they won’t be performing, they will be in hand for the tribute concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and will likely say a few words in addition to having their work interpreted by performers on hand. Former Suga’ guest Dianne Reeves performed and you can view the archived  video stream.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club  with the New Jawn quartet from April 11-16.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at WNYC Radio’s Greene Space on April 13 performing selections from his Mutations CD and a new work called Time, Place, Action.

Pianist Billy Childs leads a quartet at the Jazz Standard from April 13-16th.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett leads a quintet at the Blue Note from April 13-16th.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is at Brooklyn’s BRIC Arts Media on April 13-14 and leads a big band at the Jazz Gallery from April 21-22nd.

Pianist Harold Mabern is at Smoke with a quartet from April 14-16th and leads a trio at Smalls on the 19th.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Daryl’s House in Pawling NY with Ministers of Sound on April 16th.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at The Blue Note on April 17th with pianist McCoy Tyner.

Looking a little further ahead, drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun is in Montclair NJ at the Wellmont Theater with Paul Shaffer’s band on April 21 and at the Theatre at Westbury in Long Island on April 22nd.

Trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre leads a qunitet at Smoke from April 21-23.

Trombonist Craig Harris is at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on April 22nd.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Newark’s NJPAC on April 23rd with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding.

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter is at Newark’s NJPAC on April 22-23rd.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at WNYC Radio’s Greene Space for an Ella Fitzgerald tribute on April 24.

Trumpeter Hugh Masekela will be at the Town Hall on April 27th with the Jazz Epistles.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band at Aaron Davis Hall on The City College of New York’s Harlem campus on November 18 for a birthday tribute and retirement celebration for legendary percussionist Candido Camero.
 
Bassist Christian McBride leads a James Brown tribute at The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on November 18 as part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.
 
Bassist Christian McBride and Vocalist Dianne Reeves are at The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on November 19 for a Sarah Vaughn tribute as part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.
 
Also at The Blue Note is vibraphonist Gary Burton as part of pianist Chick Corea’s Miles Davis tribute from November 22-23.
 
Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun’s gallery exhibit of his visual art collaboration Aza is on view at the Bronx Music Heritage Center through February 11. We reviewed the show earlier this year.
 
Finally, looking much further ahead, the Winter Jazz Fest has released a teaser and preliminary lineup for the 2017 shinding from January 5-10! We’ll have a lot more to say about it, but for now, we’ll point you to their promo video with the highlights.

2016 Vision Fest Day 4 Report: A Nod to the Sacred

I’ve been covering the 2016 Vision Festival daily so far as part of Suga’ in My Bowl Radio’s on air coverage. If you missed it, check out the festival preview or the installments on the opening night highlighting bassist/violinist/poet Henry Grimes, day two’s report on the Sun Ra Arkestra’s set, or day 3’s report. Suga’ host and executive producer Joyce Jones has been on the scene as well, and it’s largely her photos you see in these posts.
 
Friday night’s closing set belonged to pianist Michele Rosewoman, who returned to Vision, this time with an 11-member version of her New YorUba ensemble in tow and playing both old pieces and a new work receiving its first public performance at Vision.
 
The set started with “Old Calabar” from the Abakuá tradition, a version of which appears on her New YorUba release. New YorUba melds jazz improvisation with Afro-Cuban rhythms, drawing heavily on sacred music. The inclusion in this year’s Vision broadens the scope of the festival and what one might think of as jazz avant garde.

Appropriately enough, Rosewoman introduced the second piece, “Oru De Oro”, composed with the help of a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant and receiving it’s public premiere, explaining that “although this is not of the free jazz tradition, it grows out of that tradition”. Drums–especially African percussion–were at the center of the piece.
 
The piece evolved organically around the expansive rhythm section, buoyed by an impressive brass lineup including Stacy Dillard and Roman Filiu on saxes, Chris Wasahburne on trombone, and Alex Norris on trumpet. A sacred sequence of rhythms (called the Oru Igbodu) played on bata drums set the tone for the piece along with Cuban folklorist Roman Diaz’s expressive vocals.

“Reza a Ochun (Prayer for Ochun)” closed the set. Amma McKen returned to the stage to sing lead vocals and her deep, soaring voice formed the centerpiece of the song. In this song, the big band took a turn in an incredibly funky direction, showing that they can swing as hard as anyone. Rosewoman played off McKen’s vocals in an almost call-and-response pattern in a song that seemed to end way too soon.

The ensemble showed yet another way of approaching the idea of a big band. Instead of leaning on the sheer power of an expansive brass section, New YorUba drew out the subtlety and complexity of the music, which, at times, sounded pleasantly sparse, concealing the incredible difficulty of the exchange.
 
While we’re now seeing renewed interest in what’s called Spiritual Jazz (thanks, in part, to the breakout success of saxophonist Kamasi Washington) New YorUba reveals a basic element of spirituality and jazz: one that many musicians would argue is at the core of their work. In this case, it’s a return to the very roots of the musical tradition.
 
Earlier sets included drummer William Hooker’s ensemble, accompanied by dancer Goussy Celestin; vocalist Fay Victor’s Sound Noise Quartet; poet Bob Holman and bassist Todd Nicholson’s collaboration in memory of late violinist Billy Bang; and multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore’s ensemble with percussionist Michael Wimberly.

This week’s guests are harpist Riza Printup and trumpeter Marcus Printup. Marcus leads a sextet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on May 25th and 26th. As usual, we have lots more music for you this week.

Guitarist Julian Lage is at Drom on the Lower East Side on May 11th and the Jazz Standard on May 12th.
 
Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Ginny’s Supper Club on the 14th.
 
Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache at Carnegie Hall on the 14th and will be at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on the 21st for the Made in New York Gala.
 
Saxophonist Oliver Lake is at the 17 White St Loft in Manhattan for a duo performance with bassist Joe Fonda on May 15th.
 
Looking further ahead, Tubist Howard Johnson is at Craig Harris’s Harlem Afternoon Jazz Series at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church for two lunchtime sets on May 17th.
 
The MAC Power Trio of saxophonist David Murray, pianist Geri Allen, drummer Teri Lyne Carrington, and celebrates the release of their CD debut Perfection at Birdland from May 17-21.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller is at The Blue Note on the 25th with the Berklee Rainbow All Stars.

Pianist Randy Weston has a busy week. He leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake in the Dweck Center of the Brooklyn Public Library’s main branch on the 26th and in a free performance at New School University’s Tishman Auditorium on the 28th to close out his yearlong residency. Finally, Weston returns to the Dweck Center on the 30th for a talk on the African roots of jazz. The Brooklyn library events are part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.
 
Looking further ahead, Saxophonist Oliver Lake and bassist Reggie Workman are at Village Vanguard with TRIO3 from April 26-May 1.
 
Pianist Barry Harris leads a trio in a lunchtime set at St. Peter’s Church on April 27th.
 
Drummer Billy Cobham is at The Blue Note from April 27-May 1 with Donald Harrison.
 
Drummer Kim Thompson leads a quartet at Zinc Bar on the 29th.
 
Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads his DIASPORA band at Sistas’ Place on April 30. This event is part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.
 
Pianist Geri Allen is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on April 30 with Joe Lovano.
 
Saxophonist and EVI master Marshall Allen makes a rare non-Arkestra Earthly appearance with two sets at The Stone on April 30.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache at Stamford CT’s Palace Theater on March 18th and leads the Multiverse Big Band at the Bronx Music Heritage Center on the 19th.
 
Pianist Vijay Iyer hosts a listening party at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on the 15th and starts a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) from March 18-31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.
 
Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the Cell Theatre on March 19th.
 
Pianist Randy Weston celebrates his 90th birthday at Carnegie Hall with bassist Alex Blake and the African Rhythms ensemble on March 19th.
 
Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the the NYPL’s Schomburg Center for a Women’s History Month jazz program on the 21st and Toshi Reagon wraps up the the series on the 28th. Tune in to our March 20th show on WBAI for a ticket giveaway for both shows!
 
Also at the Schomburg Center is film director Carol Bash for a daytime talk and screening of her Mary Lou Williams documentary film The Lady Who Swings the Band on March 23.

Poet Sonia Sanchez reads at The City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall on March 31 before a screening of the documentary film Baddddd Sonia Sanchez.
