Drummer Bobby Sanabria is at the Jersey City Pier for the Riverview Jazz Fest on September 13 and leads the Multiverse Big Band at the Lincoln Center Atrium on September 20.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen is at the James Cohan Gallery for an afternoon set on September 14.

Trombonist Craig Harris brings the Harlem Night Songs Big Band to Harlem’s Greater Calvary Baptist Church for lunchtime sets on September 17 and 24.

Bassist Christian McBride is at The Blue Note from September 17-22 and is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem for a talk with bassist Ron Carter on September 24.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane leads an ensemble at the Village Vanguard with pianist David Virelles from September 17-22.

Merkin Hall is hosting a tribute to tubist Howard Johnson on September 18.

Bassist William Parker and poet Jesus Papoleto Melendez are both in the First Street Green Garden for afternoon sets on E 1th St on September 22 as part of Vision Fest promoters’ Arts for Art’s fall season. Parker and trumpeter Jamie Branch return to 1st St on the 29th for a Roy Campbell tribute.

Saxophonist Claire Daly leads a quartet at Smalls on September 22.

Pianist Harold Mabern is at Smalls with Jimmy Cobb’s quartet from September 5-8 and returns to lead a trio on September 17-18.

Vision Fest promoters Arts for Art begins their fall season of events with a tribute to the late poet Steve Cannon at The Clemente Soto Velez Center on September 6 with poetry and music. Bassist William Parker, dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker, and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis join poets for the celebration with a closing performance by the Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen. As part of the series, William Parker is in the 6BC Garden on E 6th St on September 7-8. Arts for Arts’ series continues throughout the fall with performances in Gardens, at the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn, and over Columbus Day Weekend in East Harlem. Following directly on the heels of their annual September inGardens series, Vision Fest promoter Arts for Art comes roaring back with a “Race and Resistance” festival spanning the weekends of October 7-9 and 12-14. The first weekend is at Teatro La TEA at 107 Suffolk St and the show moves uptown for the second weekend to El Taller Latino Americano in the basement of 215 E 99 St. With a total of 22 sets spread over the six nights, there’s too much to fully cover here, but expect appearances by bassists William Parker, Jöelle Leandre; saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, vocalist Fay Victor; trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah; poet Jesus Papoleto Melendez; trombonist Craig Harris; flutist Nicole Mitchell; and dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker. The series starts with an artists round table discussion on “Racism and the Right to Vote” on the afternoon of October 7. See the full schedule here.

A review of the last 2 days is coming soon, too. WBAI Radio’s officially wrapped its Spring Fund Drive and thanks to those who pledged! WBGO Radio has a visual art exhibit featuring works produced by musicians. It’s on view at their studio in downtown Newark NJ and features the work of Will Calhoun, Mino Cinelu, Dick Griffin, Oliver Lake, Carmen Lundy and others. Saxophonist Oliver Lake will be performing for the reception on June 8.

Director John Scheinfeld’s John Coltrane documentary film Chasing ‘Trane is playing at Cinema Village in Manhattan (closes June 8), the Picture House in Pelham (June 9-15), and Time and Space in Hudson (June 10-11). See our review of the film for a preview.

Director Casper Kollin’s Lee Morgan documentary film I Called Him Morgan  is also playing at Time and Space in Hudson (June 8-9) and the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville on June 15. We’ve got a review of that, too.

This week’s show continues our Vision Festival 22 preview coverage with saxophonist Kidd Jordan, who you can catch at Vision on Friday June 2.  V22 opens at Judson Memorial Church on May 29 and runs through June 3. Scroll down for details and our annual preview is on the way.

Guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Antonio Sanchez are at the Beacon Theater on June 10.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by saxophonist Marshall Allen is at Union Pool in Brooklyn on June 10.

Vocalist Thana Alexa and bassist William Parker are both at the Red Hook Jazz Festival on June 11.

The big event on the horizon is this year’s Vision Fest. It starts on the May 28 at Anthology film archives and moves to Judson Memorial Church from the 29-June 3 with nightly performances of jazz, dance, poetry, and visual art. In addition to William Parker and Cooper-Moore, you can see drummer Hamid Drake, poets Carl Hancock Rux and Jesus Papoleto Melendez, TRIO 3 with Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille and Oliver Lake; and saxophonists Charles Gayle and David Murray. There’s also a conference on June 1 at Columbia University sponsored by the Center for Jazz Studies and a new series of after hours sets starting at midnight at Nublu.

WBAI Radio returns as a media sponsor of this year’s Vision Fest.
