Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Camille Thurman is at Jazz at Lincoln Center on September 12-14 with the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra and with Darrell Green’s trio and September 15 at the White Plains Jazz Festival.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria is at the Jersey City Pier for the Riverview Jazz Fest on September 13 and leads the Multiverse Big Band at the Lincoln Center Atrium on September 20.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen is at the James Cohan Gallery for an afternoon set on September 14.

Pianist Marc Cary’s Harlem Sessions series continues with weekly late Saturday night sets at Smoke on September 14 and 21. He also brings the show to Minton’s on September 19.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake leads a big band at Dizzy’s Club on September 16.

Poet and multi-instrumentalist Ngoma Hill is at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore in Harlem on September 17 and returns the third Tuesday of every month for the Fat Tuesdays poetry and music showcase.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane leads an ensemble at the Village Vanguard with pianist David Virelles from September 17-22.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on September 18 and at The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on September 20.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz and drummer Lenny White join Charles Tolliver’s all star band to open the new Sistas’ Place season in Brooklyn on September 21.

Pianist Aaron Parks leads trios with drummer Billy Hart at The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on September 21 and the Village Vanguard from September 24-29.

Bassist William Parker and poet Jesus Papoleto Melendez are both in the First Street Green Garden for afternoon sets on E 1th St on September 22 as part of Vision Fest promoters’ Arts for Art’s fall season. Parker and trumpeter Jamie Branch return to 1st St on the 29th for a Roy Campbell tribute.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller is at The Blue Note on the 25th with the Berklee Rainbow All Stars.
 
AZA, the exhibit of drummer Will Calhoun’s visual art collaboration is on display at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx until July 21st. Calhoun will be at the Blue Note on the 26th May 30th with McCoy Tyner.
 
Pianist Randy Weston has a busy week. He leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake in the Dweck Center of the Brooklyn Public Library’s main branch on the 26th and in a free performance at New School University’s Tishman Auditorium on the 28th to close out his yearlong residency. Finally, Weston returns to the Dweck Center on the 30th for a talk on the African roots of jazz. The Brooklyn library events are part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Pianist Barry Harris leads a trio in a lunchtime set at St. Peter’s Church on April 27th.

Pianist Randy Weston is at New School’s Tishman Auditorium for a performance and talk on September 10. It’s the kickoff event for his yearlong residency, so look for several more events over the course of the year.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on September 10 and 17 at The Gin Fizz.

Saxophonist Billy Harper is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with The Cookers from September 10-13.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson is at the Blue Note from September 15-16.

Drummer Billy Cobham is at BB King’s on September 16.

Legendary bassist Reggie Workman is at Symphony Space on September 18.

Vocalist Carmen Lundy is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from September 18-20.

Bassist Bob Cranshaw is at Small’s with Joe Farnsworth’s quartet on September 19.

Pianist Harold Mabern co-leads a quartet with Eric Alexander at OSPAC in West Orange NJ on September 19.

Vocalist Nona Hendryx is at Le Poisson Rouge with Word/Rock/Sword on September 19.

Low brass specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on September 19.

On the Bandstand: August 31, 2014 Edition

Suga in My Bowl is off the WBAI airwaves this week for the last Sunday of the month, but set your alarm for next week, when Last Poet Abiodun Oyewole joins us on September 7th! And we have other live music listings for you this week.

Bassist Bob Cranshaw is at Smoke with George Coleman’s Quartet on September 5th and 6th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has a free outdoor concert on September 7th with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY. It’s a short walk from the Metro North Railroad station.

Drummer Billy Cobham appears at the Blue Note to celebrate 40 years of his landmark Spectrum album from September 2nd to 7th.

You can catch harpist Brandee Younger at the historic reopened Minton’s in Harlem on September 7th.

Also at the Blue Note from September 9th to 14th is an all star line-up of saxophonist Pharaoah Sanders, pianist Geri Allen, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, who are gathering for a live album recording session with Odean Pope!

Bassist Christian McBride leads a trio at Birdland from September 9th to 13th.

Legendary drummer Roy Haynes brings his Fountain of Youth band to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from September 11th to 14th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under saxophonist Marshall Allen’s direction flies in from Saturn to land at Roulette in Brooklyn on September 12th.

Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to the Jazz Standard with a trio from September 12th to 14th.
