Percussionist Steve Kroon leads a Latin Jazz sextet at The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on April 19.

Myself, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, and Howard University’s Dr. Greg Kimathi Carr are at the ASCAC Conference at Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College on April 19-20 talking about the legacy of pianist Randy Weston. Randy’s widow Fatoumata Weston will be there as well to offer her insights.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at the Turning Point Café in Piermont NY on April 20.

Finally, Trombonist Craig Harris is at Brooklyn’s Sista’s Place on April 20.

Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Camille Thurman is at Dizzy’s Club with Darrell Green’s trio on April 30.

Finally, Poet Carl Hancock Rux is at Brooklyn’s Billie Holiday Theatre (inside Restoration Plaza) for  the multimedia production “A Walk into Slavery” from April 30-May 4.

Randy Weston’s Homegoing Service

Pianist Randy Weston, an NEA Jazz Master, died on Saturday September 1 in his longtime Brooklyn home at the age of 92. He’ll be missed be many in the community, especially in the New York City area, where he was also a fixture at Pan-African events.

Weston’s family has released details on the wake and public funeral service, which are as follows:

The wake will be at the Frank Bell Funeral Home at 536 Sterling Place in Brooklyn on Sunday September 9. Visitation is from 1-7 PM with a service from 4-7.

The funeral will be at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 1047 Amsterdam Ave. (at 112 St.) in Manhattan on Monday September 10. Viewing is from 3-4 PM with a service from 4-7.

Vision Fest promoters Arts for Art hosts a salon with saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and poet Quincy Troupe in conversation and performance at the Lower East Side’s Clemente Soto Velez Center on December 6.

Emma Franz’s documentary film Bill Frisell: A Portrait starts a run at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village on December 6.

Pianist Randy Weston will be at the New School for a screening and discussion of the documentary film Randy in Tangier on December 6. He’ll also be performing at the chapel of Columbia University’s Teachers College on December 10 to close the African Diaspora International Film Festival.

Vision Fest promoters Arts for Art are sponsoring a “Race and Resistance Un-Columbus” weekend festival from October 7-9 at El Taller Latino Americano (215 E 99 St in Manhattan). Drummer Francisco Mora Catlett’s Afrohorn with saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads off on the 7th, with sets by poet Jesus Papoleto Melendez and trombonist Craig Harris later that evening. On the 8th, poet Quincy Troupe reads accompanied by guitarist Kelvyn Bell. Multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore has a set later that night. On Monday the 9th, the event wraps up with bassist William Parker’s “Songs of Freedom” featuring dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker and drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Pianist  David Virelles is at the Jazz Gallery on October 13 with Roman Filiu.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Keep up with us via Facebook, the blog here, or our main website, or Twitter and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

We’re off this week, but will be back next week with an interview with bassist Linda May Han Oh. Meanwhile if you missed last week’s show with saxophonist Claire Daly, you can listen in our archives. Former Suga’ guests vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, bassist Dave Holland, and organist Dr. Lonnie Smith are among the 2017 class of NEA Jazz Masters! Although they won’t be performing, they will be in hand for the tribute concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and will likely say a few words in addition to having their work interpreted by performers on hand. Former Suga’ guest Dianne Reeves performed and you can view the archived  video stream.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club  with the New Jawn quartet from April 11-16.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at WNYC Radio’s Greene Space on April 13 performing selections from his Mutations CD and a new work called Time, Place, Action.

Pianist Billy Childs leads a quartet at the Jazz Standard from April 13-16th.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett leads a quintet at the Blue Note from April 13-16th.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is at Brooklyn’s BRIC Arts Media on April 13-14 and leads a big band at the Jazz Gallery from April 21-22nd.

Pianist Harold Mabern is at Smoke with a quartet from April 14-16th and leads a trio at Smalls on the 19th.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Daryl’s House in Pawling NY with Ministers of Sound on April 16th.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at The Blue Note on April 17th with pianist McCoy Tyner.

Looking a little further ahead, drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun is in Montclair NJ at the Wellmont Theater with Paul Shaffer’s band on April 21 and at the Theatre at Westbury in Long Island on April 22nd.

Trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre leads a qunitet at Smoke from April 21-23.

Trombonist Craig Harris is at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on April 22nd.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Newark’s NJPAC on April 23rd with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding.

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter is at Newark’s NJPAC on April 22-23rd.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at WNYC Radio’s Greene Space for an Ella Fitzgerald tribute on April 24.

Trumpeter Hugh Masekela will be at the Town Hall on April 27th with the Jazz Epistles.
