On The Bandstand: April 16, 2017 Edition

This week’s show features bassist Linda May Han Oh. Her CD release event for the brand new Walk Against Wind will be on Wednesday April 19 at the Jazz Standard. You can also see her on Tuesday April 18 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with Jaleel Shaw or on the 21st at Cornelia St Café with Chris Dingman’s Trio.

We start with Director John Scheinfeld’s John Coltrane documentary film Chasing ‘Trane. It’s screening at the IFC Center in Manhattan through Thursday April 20. Also see our review of the film.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at The Blue Note on April 17th with pianist McCoy Tyner.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on the 19th.

Bassist Christian McBride is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to talk about his recording and performing career for the third installment of the Session Stories series on April 20 and at Newark’s NJPAC on April 23rd with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake leads a big band at the Jazz Gallery from April 21-22nd.

Looking a little further ahead, drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun is in Montclair NJ at the Wellmont Theater with Paul Shaffer’s band on April 21 and at the Theatre at Westbury in Long Island on April 22nd.

Trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre leads a qunitet at Smoke from April 21-23.

Trombonist Craig Harris is at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on April 22nd.

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter is at Newark’s NJPAC on April 22-23rd.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at WNYC Radio’s Greene Space for an Ella Fitzgerald tribute on April 24.

Trumpeter Hugh Masekela will be at the Town Hall on April 27th with the Jazz Epistles.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads his Diaspora ensemble in a jazz opera titled Sun Ra Returns at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on April 29th.

Saxophonist David Murray leads the Class Struggle ensemble at the Village Vanguard from May 2-7 with trombonist Craig Harris.

Former Suga’ guests vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, bassist Dave Holland, and organist Dr. Lonnie Smith are among the 2017 class of NEA Jazz Masters! Although they won’t be performing, they will be in hand for the tribute concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and will likely say a few words in addition to having their work interpreted by performers on hand. Former Suga’ guest Dianne Reeves performed and you can view the archived  video stream.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at WNYC Radio’s Greene Space on April 13 performing selections from his Mutations CD and a new work called Time, Place, Action.

Pianist Billy Childs leads a quartet at the Jazz Standard from April 13-16th.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett leads a quintet at the Blue Note from April 13-16th.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is at Brooklyn’s BRIC Arts Media on April 13-14 and leads a big band at the Jazz Gallery from April 21-22nd.

Pianist Harold Mabern is at Smoke with a quartet from April 14-16th and leads a trio at Smalls on the 19th.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Daryl’s House in Pawling NY with Ministers of Sound on April 16th.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads the Quintessence ensemble at The Cell Theatre in Manhattan on the 8th.

Pianist David Virelles is at the Jazz Gallery with drummer Marcus Gilmore on the 8th.

This week’s show concludes our 2017 2017 Winter Jazz Fest coverage with return visits by low brass specialist Joe Daley and Ruth Cameron, Charlie Haden’s widow and producer of several Haden albums. The Liberation Music Orchestra closes the Winter Jazz Fest on Tuesday January 10 at Le Poisson Rouge with pianist Geri Allen as a special guest. Ruth Cameron will be part of a panel discussion right before the show in the same location. Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 21st. You can see our review of the Winter Jazz Fest right here later this week. Now on to the rest of the week’s events.

Bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake team up for a Roy Campbell tribute on January 9 and again on the 16 and 18 at the Clemente Soto Velez Center as part of Arts for Art’s Justice is Compassion series.

Guitarist Pat Metheny leads a quartet with drummer Antonio Sanchez at the Ridgefield Playhouse in CT on January 20th and at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ on the 22nd.
 
Vocalist Kurt Elling is with saxophonist Branford Marsalis’s quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater on the 20-21st.
 
Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in The Bronx with Larry Harlow on the 21st.
 
Guitarist Marc Ribot is at The Stone on January 22nd with fellow guitarist James Moore.
 
Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun has a CD release event for his Elvin Jones tribute at the Blue Note from the 24-26. Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane joins Calhoun as special guest on the 24th.

Not to be outdone by the Winter Jazz Fest, Vision Fest promoters Arts for Art is again sponsoring a nearly monthlong series from January 2-22nd of music, poetry, dance, and visual art titled “Justice is Compassion/ Not a Police State” at the Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side. Poet Jesus Papoleto Melendez, bassist William Parker, drummer Hamid Drake, drummer/percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett’s AfroHORN, and dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker are just a few of the many involved. Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun’s gallery exhibit of his visual art collaboration Aza is on view at the Bronx Music Heritage Center through February 11. We reviewed the show earlier this year.

This week’s guest is trumpeter Hugh Masekela! The Doc NYC Festival continues until the 19th and has several films of interest to jazz fans. The Sonia Sanchez documentary Baddd Sonia Sanchez screens on the 18th and 19th. The Jazz Loft According to W Eugene Smith collects material from the extensive recordings and photographs from Smith’s years in a Sixth Ave loft building frequented by several jazz luminaries and screens on the 16th. Finally, Liz Garbus’s Nina Simone documentary What Happened Miss Simone? Screens on the 17th and 18th. The Doc NYC website has showtimes and details and you can find links to everything and a festival preview on our blog.
 
If you missed the weeklong run of Jeff Lieberman’s The Amazing Nina Simone documentary in NYC, you’ve got another shot on the 18th, when it screens at Huntington LI’s Cinema Arts Centre. Those of you (far) north of the city can catch it in Rhinebeck NY on the 20th and Woodstock on the 21st at Upstate Films.
 
Vibraphonist Roy Ayers is at the Blue Note from November 17-22.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’ve been pre-empted for WBAI’s Spring Fund Drive. We’ll be back (for sure this time) on June 14. Drummer Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Aché at Subrosa with the legendary Candido as special guest on percussion on June 7.
