This week’s show focuses on 2018 Grammy nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn! She’ll be at the Jazz Standard from March 1-4 and we have more listings for you. Be sure to check back for our review of the 2018 Winter Jazz Fest!

Professor Farah Jasmine Griffin and poet Quincy Troupe are at the Schomburg Library on January 30 for a talk on James Baldwin and Miles Davis.

Pianist David Virelles leads Nosotros at the Jazz Standard on January 30-31.

Saxophonist David Murray leads the Infinity Quartet at Birdland from January 31-February 3.

Drummer Francisco Mora Catlett is at Brooklyn’s Sista’s Place on February 3 with Afro Horn.

Vocalist Dianne Reeves is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater on February 9-10.

Percussionist Steve Kroon leads a sextet at Brooklyn’s Sista’s Place on February 10.

Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis is at the Zürcher Gallery with pianist DD Jackson on February 13.

Last week’s show featured a documentary special from Joyce Jones on the late Abbey Lincoln to wrap up the Winter Fund Drive. Bassist Christian McBride is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on March 14 for part 3 of the Session Stories: a talk on his recording and performing work.

Bassist Mimi Jones leads a trio at Inc Bar and Kitchen in New Brunswick NJ on March 15.

Trumpeter Marcus Printup is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater on March 17-18 with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra playing music from the sixties.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads New Yor-Uba at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from March 17-19.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at Smoke from the 17-19th for a CD release party with Heads of State. He’ll also be at The Blue Note on March 20 with pianist McCoy Tyner.

Drummer JT Lewis and keyboardist David Virelles are at the Jazz Gallery on the 18th with the Phantom Station ensemble.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake, bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and pianist Marc Cary are at the Village Vanguard as TRIO3 + 1 from March 21-26.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Daryl’s House in Pawling NY with Ministers of Sound for a Gospel Brunch set on March 26.

Vocalist Thana Alexa leads a group at the Jazz Standard on March 16 with drummer Antonio Sanchez.
 
Pianist Harold Mabern is at Smalls on March 16 and celebrates his 80th birthday at Smoke from March 18-20 with special guests vocalist Kurt Elling on the 18th and bassist Bob Cranshaw on the 20th.
 
Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache at Stamford CT’s Palace Theater on March 18th.
 
Pianist Vijay Iyer has a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) from March 18-31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.
 
Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the Cell Theatre on March 19th.
 
Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the the NYPL’s Schomburg Center for a Women’s History Month jazz program on the 21st.
 
Finally, also at the Schomburg Center is film director Carol Bash for a daytime talk and screening of her Mary Lou Williams documentary film The Lady Who Swings the Band on March 23.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. We start with another ticket giveaway for the final event in the Schomburg Library’s Women’s Jazz Festival on March 30th! Saxophonist Oliver Lake is also a visual artist and has an exhibit of his painted sticks at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art in downtown Newark NJ until May 21st.

Bassist Christian McBride leads his big band at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from March 31st-April 5.

Randy Weston will lead his African Rhythms Sextet with bassist Alex Blake at the Jazz Standard from April 2nd-5th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet with bassist Mimi Jones at Smoke from April 3rd-5th.

Low brass specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on April 4th and 18th.

Dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker appears at Clemente Soto Velez Center as part of Arts for Art’s monthlong “Our Earth/Our World” festival of musicians, poets, and visual artists.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be at Zinc Bar on April 8th.

Pianist Harold Mabern’s trio celebrates the release of their Afro Blue CD at Smoke on April 10-12th.

Special ticket giveaway: We have four tickets for the Schomburg Women’s Jazz Festival’s final event on Monday March 30th.
