Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re off the air this week, but we’ll be back on WBAI with a fresh show next Sunday with harpist Riza Printup. Meanwhile, if you missed last week’s show with saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Archie Shepp, then head on over to our archives to check it out. Looking further ahead, poet/vocalist Latasha Nevada Diggs and pianist Marc Cary are at Lincoln Center’s Atrium for a tribute to the late poet Jayne Cortez on the 14th. Diggs also hosts tributes at Poets’ House on the 16th and Highline Ballroom on the 23rd: all of which are free!
 
Vocalist Catherine Russell is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room on April 15-16.
 
Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on the 16th.
 
Saxophonist Oliver Lake and trombonist Craig Harris will be at Aljira Contemporary Arts Center in Newark NJ on April 16th.
 
Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 16th.
 
Drummer and visual artist Will Calhoun is at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx on the 22nd for a performance and reception to open the show of his visual art, which is on display until July 21st.
 
Finally, Guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area for a series of shows with bassist Ron Carter. The duo are at Norwalk CT’s Infinity Hall on April 20-21, Cape May NJ’s Exit Zero Jazz Fest on the 23rd, and Newton NJ’s Newton Theater on the 24th.
 
Also at Exit Zero is vocalist René Marie, who takes the stage on the 23rd.
 
Saxophonist “Sweet Poppa” Lou Donaldson has a free outdoor concert at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education Rooftop in the South Bronx on the 23rd.

This week’s guest is saxophonist and NEA Jazz Master Archie Shepp! He has no immediate area shows, but you can catch the NEA’s tribute concert streamed live on Monday April 4 starting at 8 PM EST on the NEA website or on National Public Radio’s site. And we have lots more music for you this week.
 
The live stream of the NEA Jazz Masters tribute concert features performances by former Suga’ guests Randy Weston, Lakecia Benjamin, Billy Harper, David Murray, Catherine Russell and many more performers. Toshi Reagon wraps up the Women’s Jazz Festival at the the NYPL’s Schomburg Center on the 28th. The show is sold out, but we’re giving away a pair of tickets. On the Bandstand: November 16, 2014 Edition

This week’s guest is Low Brass Specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley in the first of a 2-part show! You can catch him with Hazmat Modine at Terra Blues in the Village on November 22nd. Until then, here’s what other Suga’ guests are doing in the area.

Looking ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area with his Unity Group. They’ll be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY on November 19th, Bergen NJ’s Performing Arts Center on the 20th, and The Space in Westbury Long Island on the 21st. Note that Metheny’s shows often sell out early!

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is one of many guests at Jazzmobile’s rescheduled 50th anniversary concert on the 21st hosted by WBGO Radio’s Rhonda Hamilton at Harlem’s First Corinthian Baptist Church.

Vocalist René Marie will be at 54 Below on November 21st -22nd.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Newark’s NJPAC on November 22nd with Béla Fleck and the group Brooklyn Rider.

Blues singer Alexis P. Suter will be at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on November 22nd.

Pianist Harold Mabern returns to Smoke with the Steve Davis Sextet from November 28th-30th.

Drummer Will Calhoun will be at Irving Plaza with Living Colour on November 28th.

On the Bandstand: March 16, 2014 Edition

Tonight’s guest is Deborah Gordon, owner of NYC’s legendary Village Vanguard. You can see the results of her work most nights of the week at the Vanguard.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 17th and 24th.

Looking ahead to next week, organist John Medeski and pianist Vijay Iyer will be at the Town Hall with John Zorn on March 19th.

Also on the 19th, pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls Jazz club.

Bassist Alex Blake appears at Birdland for a CD release party with the Puppeteers on the 20th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be appearing with Annette Montague for a jazz brunch at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on March 23rd.

Looking further ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny’s Unity Group has 3 area shows at the end of March to support their new album titled Kin. You can catch them in Red Bank New Jersey at the Count Basie Theater on March 23rd. They’re in Fairfield CT at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts on the 25th and in New York at the Town Hall Theater on the 28th. For those of you outside the listening area, Metheny’s website also has links for their entire tour, which will cover much of the US and Europe. Metheny fans should get tickets right away, as the shows sell out fast.
