On The Bandstand: November 24, 2019 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and back on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio every Tuesday night from 10 PM -12 midnight. Program note: We’re pre-empted for fund raising after WBAI’s return to the air after an attempt by a few members of the Pacifica Foundation’s national board to close the station. The station really needs immediate support due to the fall fund drive being cut short and the station needs an infusion of cash right away to recover. Please pledge whatever you can (we suggest at least the $25 level) or become a sustaining member by signing up for a monthly pledge of $10 or more. The tireless Vision Fest promoters Arts for Arts’ “Free Jazz on a Sunday Afternoon” series continues Sundays through December 15. Admission is free (donations accepted) and there will be drawing materials for children and an interactive part of the performance.

Guitarist John Scofield and bassist Dave Holland are in a duo at The Blue Note from November 26-December 1.

Pianist Marc Cary’s Harlem Sessions series continues with a move to weekly late Thursday night sets at Smoke on November 28 and December 5.

Pianist David Virelles is at the Village Vanguard with Jonathan Blake from December 3-5.

Guitarist Mary Halvorson has a residency at The Stone from December 3-7. Trumpeter Adam O”Farrill joins her Code Girl ensemble on December 6-7.

Tubist Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on December 7.

Bassist Christian McBride leads Inside Straight at the Village Vanguard from December 10-15.

Bassist Mimi Jones hosts the after hours Lab Session at Smalls on December 14.

Poet and multi-instrumentalist Ngoma Hill is at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore in Harlem on December 17 and the third Tuesday of every month for the Fat Tuesdays poetry and music showcase.

Harpist Brandee Younger is at Brooklyn’s Lafayette Ave Presbyterian Church on May 5 as part of the annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Bassist Ron Carter is at the Blue Note from May 7-9 and 14-16.

Percussionist Adam Rudolph has a residency at The Stone from May 8-12 and will be joined by drummer Hamid Drake and guitarist Nels Cline on various nights.

Blues guitarist James Blood Ulmer is at City Winery on May 10.

Trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah leads the Diaspora Ensemble at Sista’s Place on May 12.

Guitarist Julian Lage is at Le Poisson Rouge on May 12.

Vocalist Lisa Fischer leads Grand Baton at the Blue Note from May 10-13.

Pianist Vijay Iyer at the Village Vanguard from May 15-20.

Finally, on the radar is the 23rd annual Vision Festival which returns to Roulete in Brooklyn from May 23-29 and a film festival on May 21 at Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan. We’ll have more details in the next Bandstand and an upcoming preview online or you can jump to the full schedule.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Dizzy’s Club on October 31 with Mokoto Ozone’s trio.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria’s class on the Roots and Rhythms of Latin Jazz at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Swing University continues on Wednesday nights until November 8.

Bassist Christian McBride and vocalist Kurt Elling are both at Fuerza Puerto Rico: a benefit for hurricane relief at the Jazz Gallery on November 1.

Flutist Nicole Mitchell is at The Stone’s new space at the New School from November 3-4.

Bassist Dave Holland is at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center with Zakir Hussain on November 5.

Guitarist Marc Ribot has a residency at The Stone’s space on Ave C from November 7-12.

Bassist Christian McBride and vocalist Dianne Reeves are at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center on November 10.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on November 13 with McCoy Tyner.

Vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur is at Birdland from November 14-18.

Pianists Marc Cary and Randy Weston and bassist Reggie Workman are all at the Schomburg Center for the National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s annual benefit concert on November 14.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun’s gallery exhibit of his visual art collaboration Aza is on view at the Bronx Music Heritage Center through February 11. We reviewed the show earlier this year.
 
Finally, looking much further ahead, the Winter Jazz Fest has released a teaser and preliminary lineup for the 2017 shinding from January 5-10! We’ll have a lot more to say about it, but for now, we’ll point you to their promo video with the highlights.
