Trombonist Craig Harris brings Harlem Night Songs to Harlem’s Greater Calvary Baptist Church on December 17 and 31 as part of the Harlem Jazz Boxxx Series and heads to Brooklyn’s Sista’s Place with Tailgators Tales on December 21.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria leads Sexteto Ibiano at Birdland for a Tito Puente tribute on December 18.

Saxophonist Marcus Strickland is at the Jazz Gallery with E.J. Strickland’s 4tet on December 19.

Pianist Marc Cary’s Harlem Sessions series continues with a move to weekly late Thursday night sets at Smoke on December 19 and late night runs from December 27-30 and January 1-4.

Vocalist Carmen Lundy is at the Jazz Standard from December 19-22.

Saxophonist T.K. Blue is at Harlem’s Greater Calvary Baptist Church on December 20 as part of the Harlem Jazz Boxxx Series.

This week’s show on October 1 features the return of one of our specials: “The Brazilian Journey” for WBAI’s Fall Fund Drive. Educator Dr. Judith King-Calnek narrates and leads listeners on a musical journey through Brazil for this feature that was produced and engineered by Joyce Jones. We did a brief Q&A with Dr. King-Calnek that you can read here.

Before we get to the rest of this week’s listings, a note that WBAI Radio’s Fall Fund Drive is in full swing. Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis closes out Arts for Art’s In Gardens series with an afternoon set at Children’s Magical Garden on Stanton St on October 5.

Tubist Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on October 5.

Bassist Linda May Han Oh is at the Jazz Gallery with Fabian Almazan’s trio on October 5.

Pianist Marc Cary’s Harlem Sessions series continues with weekly late Saturday night sets at Smoke on October 5 and 12.

Vocalist Abiah is at Joe’s Pub on October 7.

Saxophonist Jane Bunnett is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem for a listening party on October 8.

Vision Fest Promoters Arts for Art is hosting a poetry and music showcase at El Taller Latino Americano in East Harlem from October 11-13. Highlights include saxophonist James Brandon Lewis’s Trio on October 12 and poet Jesus Papoleto Melendez on October 13.

Poet and multi-instrumentalist Ngoma Hill is at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore in Harlem on October 15 and the third Tuesday of every month for the Fat Tuesdays poetry and music showcase.

We end this week with celebration and sorrow. Guitarist Mary Halvorson was named as a 2019 MacArthur Foundation Fellow! On the other end, pianist Harold Mabern died on September 19, 2019. WBGO’s Nate Chinen’s obituary is worth a read. I’ll miss collecting his gigs for the Bandstand and miss seeing him and hearing his music even more.

Trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre is at Jazz Forum Arts in Tarrytown NY on December 28 and 29.

Guitarist Nels Cline is at Sony Hall in Manhattan on December 29.

Tubist Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on January 5 and 19.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at City Winery on January 7 and the Mohonk Mountain House in new Paltz NY for Jazz on the Mountain from January 12-14.

Drummer Andrew Cyrille is at the Zürcher Gallery for a solo performance on January 9.

The 2019 Winter Jazz Fest blows back into town from January 4-12 and the full schedule’s been announced! Shows are scheduled at various venues in downtown Manhattan with marathon nights of music on the 5, 11, and 12 and individual events and talks on other nights. Look for our usual on-air programming in our upcoming shows and right here–with our annual Cheat Sheet preview and more. The mini marathon night on January 5 will have the Zig Zag Power Trio with Melvin Gibbs and Will Calhoun at The Bitter End, bassist Richard Bona at Le Poisson Rouge, Tia Fuller at Zinc Bar, and Nels Cline at Nublu among many other acts. Save the date(s): the 2019 Vision Fest will honor former Suga’ guest Andrew Cyrille and returns to Roulette in downtown Brooklyn from June 11-16. Full lineups will be announced later and we’ll get you details and full coverage as the date nears and the weather warms up.

Guitarist Julian Lage has a residency at The Stone from August 14-18 and is joined by guitarist Mary Halvorson on the 14.

Percussionist Steve Kroon leads a sextet at Smoke on August 16.

Trombonist Craig Harris is at the amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park on August 17 for a free outdoor performance as part of the Jazzmobile series.

Pianist Barry Harris leads a trio at Tarrytown NY ‘s Jazz Forum Arts on August 17-18.

Pianist Marc Cary’s Harlem Sessions returns as a Saturday night series with late sets at Smoke on August 18 and 25.

At the Jazz in the Valley Festival in Poughkeepsie NY on August 19, vocalist Rene Marie and bassist Mimi Jones lead ensembles. Drummer Will Calhoun, and percussionist Neil Clarke are with Rachiim  Ausar-Sahu & Jazz/Espiritu.

Saxophonist T.K. Blue is in Ossining NY at Henry Gourdine Park on August 20 for a free outdoor concert sponsored by Jazz Forum Arts.

Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet at the Jazz Standard from August 21-22.

Guitarist Bill Frisell has a residency at The Stone from August 21-26 and is joined by drummer Andrew Cyrille on the 23. He’ll also be at National Sawdust in Brooklyn to perform a specially commissioned work on August 29 and at Russ and Daughters Café on August 30.

Jake Maginsky’s documentary film Milford Graves: Full Mantis is at Maysles Cinema in Harlem on August 22. Both Meginsky and Graves will be there for a post-film discussion. See our review of the film and our show devoted to it for more details.

Harpist Riza Printup and bassist Mimi Jones team up to lead an ensemble for a morning set at Newark’s Bethany Baptist Church on August 26.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from July 26-29.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at Dizzy’s Club on July 30, playing John Coltrane’s music.

Finally, pianist Vijay Iyer and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane are at the Jazz Gallery on August 2.
