Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, harpist Brandee Younger, and pianist David Virelles are all at the Jazz Gallery for an Alice Coltrane tribute on July 18-19.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio for the late set at Smoke on July 19.

Bassist Alex Blake is at Zinc Bar on July 20 with the Puppeteers Jazz Band.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett and harpist Brandee Younger are both at the annual John Coltrane Day concert in Huntington Park LI on July 22.

Organist John Medeski is at The Stone with Simulacrum on July 27.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from July 27-30.

On the Bandstand: May 4, 2014 Edition

This week’s guests are past and present members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Currently under the direction of Marshall Allen, they’re on a tour celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ra’s arrival on Planet Earth. You can see one guest, Ahmed Abdullah, whose Diaspora ensemble will be playing Sun Ra’s music at 2 Brooklyn gigs this week. Catch them at Sista’s Place on Saturday May 10th or the Shapeshifter lab on Sunday the 11th.

Columbia University Professor and writer Dr. Farah Jasmine Griffin will be part of a conversation about Charlie Parker’s life and legacy at Minton’s on Monday May 5th.

And Wednesday the 7th is unusually busy this week.

On Wednesday, Drummer Kim Thompson appears at Showman’s Jazz Club.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears at Minton’s with the “3SUM” group.

And, finally, pianist Vijay Iyer has is at The Stone. He also has a free performance—that’s right, free—at the City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall on Friday May 9th. You need to reserve tickets in advance for Friday, which you can do at the Harlem Stage website.

Also on Friday the 9th, drummer Bobby Sanabria leads his Multiverse Big Band in a daytime show at the Apollo Theater and Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and Drummer Michael Carvin have a late show at the Apollo Café.

Many of these events are part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines festival.

Percussionist Adam Rudolph conducts the Go Organic Orchestra at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 14th.

Organist John Medeski will be at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on April 14th and 15th with Phil Lesh.

Pianist Marc Cary will be at Smoke Jazz with Duane Eubanks on the 16th.

Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith will be at the Jazz Standard from the 17th to the 20th with both a trio and his “In the Beginning” Octet on various nights.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen will perform on Friday April 18th at DROM on the Lower East Side.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson and organist Akiko Tsuruga will be at Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 18th as part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s Festival.

Saxophonist Billy Harper appears at Iridium with The Cookers on the 18th and 19th.

Speaking of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, their annual spring festival (link opens a PDF) is going on for the rest of April. It’s all part of Jazz Appreciation Month, culminating in the UN’s International Jazz Day (yes, there is such a thing) on the 30th. Looking ahead, Vocalist Catherine Russell performs George Gershwin’s music at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 23rd and 24th.

The musical Lady Day continues its run at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St starring vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater as Billie Holiday.




Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts plays with Niels Lan Doky at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on November 13th and leads a quartet at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 15th.

Harpist Brandee Younger appears with a quartet for free on November 14th, 7 PM, at the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library in their Dweck Center.

Drummer and bandleader Bobby Sanabria appears on November 16th with the Eugene Marlow Heritage Ensemble at the Congregation Adas Emuno in Leonia, NJ.

Craig_HarrisTrombonist and multi-instrumentalist Craig Harris appears on November 17th 3 PM at the Mount Morris Association Presbyterian Church. That’s at 122nd and Mount Morris Park West in Manhattan and admission is less than the price of a movie. Details are on Craig’s website.

Looking ahead to next week, on the 22nd, pianist Michele Rosewoman and her “New Yor-Uba” small ensemble will be at the Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side as part of Arts for Art’s Latin Free Jazz mini-festival.

Finally, organist John Medeski will be at Le Poisson Rouge on November 24th as part of a 78th birthday celebration for Roswell Rudd.

Listen_Whitey_coverTonight’s guest, Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey: the Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975 (and an accompanying CD from Light in the Attic Records), will appear at Revolution Books in Manhattan on Monday at 7 and a free event at Brooklyn College’s Student Union Building on Tuesday at 2 PM.

And there’s music for you to catch this week.

The musical Lady Day continues its run at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St starring vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater as Billie Holiday.




This Tuesday, November 5th, Amiri Baraka will be at the Newark Museum for an event honoring the 50th anniversary of his influential Blues People book. He’ll be joined by several musicians, including (former Suga guest) trombonist Craig Harris.

Vocalist Carol Maillard will be at the at the Tarrytown Music Hall on November 8th as part of the legendary Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Looking ahead, several Suga’ guests will be at Cape May, NJ Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Vocalist Dianne Reeves appears on November 8th. Last month’s guest saxophonist Kenny Garrett and pianist Marc Cary’s Focus Trio take the stage on November 9th.

Dianne Reeves will also be at the Moody Jazz Festival in Newark on November 9th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts plays with Niels Lan Doky at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on November 13th and leads a quartet at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 15th.
