Tonight’s show is a rebroadcast of our show with drummer Lenny White. And we have more listings for you this week as the summer winds down.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at the Jazz Standard from September 5-10 with an Elvin Jones tribute. Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is a special guest on September 5 and bassist Charnett Moffett joins the band from the 8-10.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads a trio at Club Bonafide on September 8.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on September 8-9 and at Smalls on the 13.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun is at the Apollo Theater with Prophets of Rage on September 12.

Bassist Ron Carter is at the Jazz Standard with Ethan Iverson’s trio on September 12.

Vocalist Lizz Wright is at Highline Ballroom on September 15.

Drummer Antonio Sanchez is at the Jazz Standard from September 15-17.

Bassist and vocalist Mimi Jones is at the Bronx Museum for the Arts on September 16.

Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis is at the Children’s Magical Garden (at 129 Stanton St in Manhattan) for a free outdoor concert as part of Arts for Art’s InGardens series on the 16 and at Roulette in Brooklyn on the 18.

Finally, pianist Barry Harris leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from September 19-24.

WBGO Radio has a visual art exhibit featuring works produced by musicians. It’s on view at their studio in downtown Newark NJ and features the work of Will Calhoun, Mino Cinelu, Dick Griffin, Oliver Lake, Carmen Lundy and others.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs is at Newark’s Gateway Center for a free lunchtime concert on July 5.

Tubist Howard Johnson is at the Newark Museum for a lunchtime concert on July 6.

Saxophonist “Sweet Poppa” Lou Donaldson is at The Blue Note from July 6-9.

Bassist Ron Carter is at Smoke from July 7-9 and the Blue Note from the 11-16.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and bassist Charnett Moffett are at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on July 11 for a screening of Naked Lunch (based on William Burroughs’ novel) and playing a soundtrack co-composed by the late Ornette Coleman.

Bassist William Parker’s In Order to Survive with drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake is at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on July 13-14.

Saxophonists David Murray and Kidd Jordan are at are at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on July 14 for a reunion of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time band.

Saxophonist Rene McLean is at Brooklyn’s Sista’s Place on July 15.

Vibraphonist Roy Ayers is at Central Park’s Summerstage for a Fela Kuti tribute on July 16.

It’s the last call for director John Scheinfeld’s John Coltrane documentary film Chasing ‘Trane. It’s been extended at the IFC Center in Manhattan through May 16. If you still haven’t caught it yet, best not to delay any longer. See our review of the film for a preview.

Suga’ in My Bowl host and percussionist Joyce Jones is at the Harlem State Office Building on May 19 for a Malcolm X tribute by the December 12th Movement.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs is at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on May 20.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and harpist Brandee Younger are at The Knockdown Center in Queens on the 21 for an Alice Coltrane tribute as part of the Red Bull Music Festival. Ravi is also at Birdland from May 30-June 3.

Looking further ahead, drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at the Blue Note from May 25-28 with Larry Harlow’s Latin Legends.

Poet Carl Hancock Rux is at the Jazz Gallery as part of Joel Ross’ “Being a Young Black Man” on May 26-27.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake leads an organ quartet at Smalls on May 27. He’ll also be at the Vision Fest on May 30 and June 3.

Bassist Alex Blake is at The Blue Note with vocalist Julie E on May 29.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at The Blue Note on May 30-31 with pianist McCoy Tyner.

The big event on the horizon is this year’s Vision Fest. It starts on the May 28 at Anthology film archives and moves to Judson Memorial Church from the 29-June 3 with nightly performances of jazz, dance, poetry, and visual art. In addition to William Parker and Cooper-Moore, you can see drummer Hamid Drake, poets Carl Hancock Rux and Jesus Papoleto Melendez, TRIO 3 with Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille and Oliver Lake; and saxophonists Charles Gayle and David Murray. There’s also a conference on June 1 at Columbia University sponsored by the Center for Jazz Studies and a new series of after hours sets starting at midnight at Nublu.

WBAI Radio returns as a media sponsor of this year’s Vision Fest.

Harpist Riza Printup is at the Cicely Tyson School for Performing Arts in East Orange NJ for a daytime concert as part of WBGO Radio’s Kids Jazz Concert Series on October 1. Admission is free, but you need to bring a child for entrance.

Vocalist Lizz Wright is at the McCarter Theater in Princeton NJ on October 1st.

Saxophonist Kamasi Washington is at The Meadows Music and Arts Fest in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens on October 1st.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun will be at the Bronx Music Heritage Center on October 2 for gallery opening of his visual art collaboration Aza, which we reviewed earlier this year.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane leads a quartet at Village Vanguard from October 4-9 and performs with drummer Jack DeJohnette’s Trio at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 10th.

Finally, this week, we take a quick look at two upcoming series. Vision Fest producers Arts for Art has a series of free outdoor concerts in gardens on the Lower East Side. Also the producers of the Celebrate Brooklyn series present the second annual BRIC Jazz Festival from October 8-15th. We return to the air this week with our final preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest featuring guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer!. You can see him on January 15 the New School University’s auditorium as part of the the Winter Jazz Festival. Now let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at The Stone on the 13th with Matana Roberts and also leads a trio at this year’s Winter Jazz Fest.

Guitarist Julian Lage is at Cornelia Street Café on the 13th and at the Winter Jazz Fest’s closing event on the 17th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet at Smoke from January 13-14.

Also at Smoke is saxophonist Billy Harper, who leads a quintet from the 15-17.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads a trio at BAM Café from January 13-15.

Vocalist Kurt Elling is at Birdland performing songs from his Passion World release from January 13-16.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the new Cassandra’s Jazz Club and Gallery in Harlem from January 13-16 and 22-23rd.

Vocalists Lizz Wright and Dee Dee Bridgewater are at BB King’s on January 15.

Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 16th.

The Harlem Jazz Parlor Festival hosts trombonist Craig Harris on January 16 and low brass specialist Joe Daley on the 18.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane will be at the John Coltrane House in Dix Hills, LI on the 20th.

Vocalist René Marie is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from January 21-24.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on the 25 with legendary pianist McCoy Tyner. They’re also there on February 1, 15, and March 1. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch one of these dates and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s band in action.

Also at the Blue Note is legendary drummer Roy Haynes from January 26-27.

Drummer Craig Haynes has an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign to support making a CD and DVD of his band’s performance at the 2016 Dakar Goree Jazz Festival.

We wrap this week with two jazz festivals:

Annual Vision Fest producers Arts for Art’s nearly monthlong “Justice is Compassion” festival continues at Clemente Soto Velez Center until January 24 with drummer Hamid Drake, dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker, bassist William Parker and many more.

The annual Winter Jazz Fest blows back into town this week from the 13-17 with so many past, present (and future) Suga’ guests that it needs its own coverage. Head on over to our annual cheat sheet for a full preview.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on January 10th with our final preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest with guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer! If you missed our last shows with promoter and WJF director Brice Rosenbloom or guitarist Julian Lage, then head on over to our our audio archives for that and much more. Now let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Arts for Art (producers of the annual Vision Fest) are sponsoring a nearly monthlong “Justice is Compassion” festival at Clemente Soto Velez Center from January 4-24 with dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker, bassist William Parker and many more.

Looking a little further ahead, the annual Winter Jazz Fest blows into town from January 13-17 with so many past, present (and future) Suga’ guests that it needs its own coverage, which we’ll get to this week. But for now, you can head on over to their site and check out the complete rundown for yourself. If that’s too overwhelming, don’t worry, we’ll have you covered with a cheat sheet like we did last year.

Bassist William Parker is at The Stone with Paal Nilssen on January 9.

Also at The Stone is pianist Vijay Iyer, who’s there on the 13th with Matana Roberts.

Guitarist Julian Lage is at Cornelia Street Café on the 13th and at the Winter Jazz Fest’s closing event on the 17th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet at Smoke from January 13-14.

Also at Smoke is saxophonist Billy Harper, who leads a quintet from the 15-17.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads a trio at BAM Café from January 13-15.

Vocalist Kurt Elling is at Birdland performing songs from his Passion World release from January 13-16.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the new Cassandra’s Jazz Club and Gallery in Harlem from January 13-16 and 22-23rd.

Vocalists Lizz Wright and Dee Dee Bridgewater are at BB King’s on January 15.

The Harlem Jazz Parlor Festival hosts trombonist Craig Harris on January 16 and low brass specialist Joe Daley on the 18.
