On the Bandstand: June 22, 2014 Edition

This week’s guest is drummer Hamid Drake. There are no immediate shows to announce, but we’ll keep you up to date with this segment. But we have other listings for you if you want to catch music this week.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter will be at Roxy and Dukes in Dunellen NJ on June 27th.

Saturday, June 28th is shaping up to be a big day, music-wise.

Last week’s guest, drummer J.T. Lewis, will be appearing with Sandra St. Victor at Prospect Park’s Celebrate Brooklyn! series on June 28th.

Several guests will be at NYU’s Skirball Center for a Jazz Forum for the Arts benefit performance. Drummers Bobby Sanabria and Michael Carvin, trombonist Steve Turre, and many others will be there.

Bassist Reggie Workman will have a birthday celebration concert at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn.

Finally, if you’re up for a road trip, you can catch pianist Marc Cary‘s Focus Trio and Dr. Lonnie Smith’s In the Beginning Octet at the Saratoga Jazz Festival in Saratoga Springs NY on June 28th.

Further ahead in Saratoga Springs, on July 1st saxophonist Tia Fuller appears at Skidmore College’s jazz institute with Rufus Reed’s Quintet.

Also on the horizon, pianist Geri Allen has a residency at The Stone on the Lower East Side from July 1st through the 6th. On the 6th, she’ll be joined by saxophonist Tia Fuller.

The Blue Note Jazz Festival, wraps up this week with events in several venues.

Suga’ in My Bowl has a fundraising special this week featuring a panel on Black workers as we wrap up WBAI’s spring fund drive. If you missed our Amiri Baraka premium, you can still pick one up with a pledge to WBAI.

Drummer Will Calhoun is at City Winery with Living Colour on June 2nd.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads his Trio Plus ensemble at BB King’s on June 3rd.

Bassist Reggie Workman’s Group including saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin will perform at the New School on June 6th.

Bassist Christian McBride will team up with André Previn for duets at the Blue Note from June 6-8.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter will be at the Barrier Beach Blues and Arts Festival on Long Beach Long Island on June 7th.

Pianist Harold Mabern will also be at the Blue Note with Saxophonist Eric Alexander for early afternoon jazz brunch shows on June 8th.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater headlines a fundraiser for the National Jazz Museum in Harlem at Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse on June 9th.

Pianist and vocalist Diane Schuur appears at BB Kings on June 10th.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson leads a quartet featuring Hammond Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith at the Blue Note on June 10th and 11th.

Many of these events are part of the monthlong Blue Note Jazz Festival. Looking ahead, Vision Fest returns from June 11th-15th with a tribute to Charles Gayle at Brooklyn’s Roulette. We’ll have special coverage on that in a separate post, but for now it’s worth checking out the schedule.

TThe show is off the air this week for our end-of-the-month break, but there’s still some live music, so let’s dig in.

Looking further ahead, blues singer Alexis P. Suter opens for Johnny Winter at B.B. King’s Blues Club on April 29th.

Saxpohonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the re-opened Minton’s on the 30th. Details are at Mintons’ website.

Organist John Medeski will be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY with The Word on Mayday: May 1st. The Capitol Theatre’s a short walk from Port Chester’s Metro-North station.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears at Smoke Jazz club on May 2nd and 3rd with Jimmy Greene.

It’s all part of Jazz Appreciation Month, culminating in the UN’s International Jazz Day (yes, there is such a thing) on the 30th. You can catch this week’s guest, poet Jesus Papoleto Meléndez at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café on Wednesday the 23rd. He’ll be one of many poets and musicians appearing at a celebration for poet Steve Cannon.

Vocalist Catherine Russell performs George Gershwin’s music at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 23rd and 24th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears at Western Connecticut State University on the 25th and 26th, leading a quartet and the Village Vanguard Big Band.

Several Suga’ guests will be appearing at the Guggenheim Museum as part of artist Carrie Mae Weems’ event series from the 25th to the 27th, including poet and singer Carl Hancock Rux, trombonist Craig Harris, and Dick Griffin.

Tonight’s guest is Deborah Gordon, owner of NYC’s legendary Village Vanguard. You can see the results of her work most nights of the week at the Vanguard.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 17th and 24th.

Looking ahead to next week, organist John Medeski and pianist Vijay Iyer will be at the Town Hall with John Zorn on March 19th.

Also on the 19th, pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls Jazz club.

Bassist Alex Blake appears at Birdland for a CD release party with the Puppeteers on the 20th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be appearing with Annette Montague for a jazz brunch at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on March 23rd.

Looking further ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny’s Unity Group has 3 area shows at the end of March to support their new album titled Kin. You can catch them in Red Bank New Jersey at the Count Basie Theater on March 23rd. They’re in Fairfield CT at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts on the 25th and in New York at the Town Hall Theater on the 28th. For those of you outside the listening area, Metheny’s website also has links for their entire tour, which will cover much of the US and Europe. Metheny fans should get tickets right away, as the shows sell out fast.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on Monday the 20th.

Also on Monday the 20th, pianist pianist Marc Cary appears with the Namaskar ensemble at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga has a regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. She’ll be there on the 20th and 27th. She also has gigs this week at Londel’s Supper Club on the 24th and Showman’s on the 25th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on January 22nd to promote his new Right on Time release.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads the Watts Family Reunion Band at the Jazz Standard from the 22nd to the 25th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer leads a trio at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 24th and 25th.

Harpist Brandee Younger’s Quartet performs a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Flushing Branch at 1:30 PM on January 25th.

Looking further ahead, saxophonist Kenny Garrett appears at the Celebration of Jazz Saxophones at Rutgers University Newark’s Paul Robeson Campus Center on Tuesday January 28th.

Looking even further ahead, a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka featuring poet Sonia Sanchez and pianist Randy Weston will be held at the Schomburg on Saturday, February 8th. It’s probably a good idea to reserve tickets very early.

We have some sad news to share also: poet, activist, writer, and jazz journalist Amiri Baraka has died. We interviewed him in 2011 and had planned to do a special show with him in 2014 looking back at his life in music. You can hear the show we did in Suga’ in My Bowl’s audio archives (scroll down the page).



Amiri’s wake and funeral will both be held in Newark, NJ. The Wake is Friday, January 17 from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at Metropolitan Baptist Church 149 Springfield Avenue, 07103. 973.642.2267

The Funeral is on Saturday, the 18th 10:00am at Newark Symphony Hall 1020 Broad Street. 973.643.8014.

Both locations are reachable by mass transit from New York City and it goes without saying that you should get there very early to be sure to get inside. Save the date: we received news at press time that there will be a memorial at the Schomburg on February 8th. We’ll provide more concrete details when we receive them.

Drummer Michael Carvin leads an ensemble at Jazz on the Mountain at the Mohonk Mountain House from the 17th to 19th near Bear Mountain.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on Sunday the 19th.
