On The Bandstand: May 19, 2019 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re on hiatus this week (and next) for WBAI’s Spring Fund Drive: see you in June! Meanwhile, last week’s show featured the return of one of WBAI’s most popular specials: “The Journey: From Africa to the New World Through Cuba, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, Haiti and Beyond.” Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria narrates and provides music from his vast collection for this feature that was produced and engineered by Joyce Jones. You can also keep occupied by browsing through our online archives that have a solid decade of shows!

Before we get to the rest of this week’s listings, a note that WBAI Radio’s Spring Fund Drive is in full swing. Pianist Harold Mabern is at Newark’s NJPAC with Eric Alexander’s quartet on November 18 and leads a trio at Smalls on November 21.

Drummer  Lenny White is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with George Colligan’s Trio on November 20.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. Pianist Randy Weston joined the ancestors on Saturday September 2 at age 92. His funeral will be at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 1047 Amsterdam Ave. (at 112 St.) in Manhattan on Monday September 10. Viewing is from 3-4 PM with a service from 4-7 and the public is invited.

Drummer Billy Cobham and bassist Ron Carter are at the Blue Note from September 11-16.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band in a free outdoor performance at the amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park on September 14 as part of the Jazzmobile series.

Saxophonist Rudresh Mananthappa leads a trio at Arts Westchester in downtown White Plains NY on September 14.

Bassist Richard Bona is at Club Bonafide on September 14-15.

Drummer Jeff Tain Watts is at Smoke with Jimmy Greene’s quintet from September 14-16.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the Central Jersey Jazz Festival in downtown Flemington on September 14 and the White Plains Jazz Festival on September 16. She’ll also be at Dizzy’s Club from September 21-23 with Ulysses Owens’s big band.

Trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah and drummer William Hooker team up for an afternoon set at the Children’s Magical Garden on Stanton St in Manhattan on September 15 for a free outdoor concert as part of Arts for Art’s inGardens series, which runs on weekends through September 30.

Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington is at the Central Jersey Jazz Festival in downtown New Brunswick on September 15.

Guitarist Nels Cline and organist John Medeski are at Le Poisson Rouge with Chris Lightcap’s Superette on September 15.

Pianist Marc Cary’s Harlem Sessions series continues with late Saturday night sets at Smoke on September 15 and 22.

Tubist Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on September 15 and 29.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at Brooklyn’s Red Hook Jazz Festival on September 16 with the JazzBeens.

Trumpeter Marcus Printup and harpist Riza Printup are at the Central Jersey Jazz Festival in downtown Somerville on September 16.

Guitarist Bill Frisell is at Le Poisson Rouge with guitarist Mary Halvorson on September  17.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with Jazz House Kids on August 6 for a concert and pre-show talk.

Flutist Nicole Mitchell has a residency at The Stone from August 7-11 and is joined by vocalist Fay Victor on the 11th.

Finally, The Sun Ra Arkestra led by saxophonist Marshall Allen returns to Earth on August 8 at Lincoln Center’s Outdoors Festival to perform a free outdoor score to the classic Space is the Place film.

Saxophonist Jane Bunnett and Maqueque are at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from August 8-9.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band at Lincoln Center’s Outdoors Festival in Damrosch Park on August 10 in a free outdoor concert of his West Side Story Reimagined.

Pianist Marc Cary’s Harlem Sessions returns as a Saturday night series with late sets at Smoke on August 11 and 18.

At the Montclair Jazz Festival on August 11, bassist Christian McBride leads Inside Straight and saxophonist Oliver Lake, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Andrew Cyrille appear as TRIO3. McBride and Lake will also lead separate Jazz storytime sessions for children at the festival.

Guitarist Mary Halvorson is at the Jazz gallery on August 11 with Tomas Fujiwara and at The Stone‘s new space at The New School on August 14 with fellow guitarist Julian Lage.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at St. Peter’s Church in Midtown Manhattan for Jazz Vespers on August 12.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett is at the Blue Note from August 13-16.

Drummer Lenny White is at Birdland with guitarist Mike Stern’s Miles Davis tribute from August 14-18.

Guitarist Julian Lage has a residency at The Stone from August 14-18 and is joined by guitarist Mary Halvorson on the 14.

Trombonist Craig Harris is at the amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park on August 17 for a free outdoor performance as part of the Jazzmobile series.

Pianist Barry Harris leads a trio at Tarrytown NY ‘s Jazz Forum Arts on August 17-18.

At the Jazz in the Valley Festival in Poughkeepsie NY on August 19, vocalist Rene Marie and bassist Mimi Jones lead ensembles. Drummer Will Calhoun, and percussionist Neil Clarke are with Rachiim  Ausar-Sahu & Jazz/Espiritu.

Saxophonist T.K. Blue is in Ossining NY at Henry Gourdine Park on August 20 for a free outdoor concert sponsored by Jazz Forum Arts.

Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet at the Jazz Standard from August 21-22.

Guitarist Bill Frisell has a residency at The Stone from August 21-26 and is joined by drummer Andrew Cyrille on the 23. He’ll also be at National Sawdust in Brooklyn to perform a specially commissioned work on August 29 and at Russ and Daughters Café on August 30.

Jake Maginsky’s documentary film Milford Graves: Full Mantis is at Maysles Cinema in Harlem on August 22. Both Meginsky and Graves will be there for a post-film discussion. See our review of the film and our show devoted to it for more details.
