On the Bandstand: May 31 2015 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Keep up with us via Facebook, the blog here, or our main website, or Twitter and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’ve been pre-empted for WBAI’s Spring Fund Drive. We’ll be back (for sure this time) on June 14. To get your fix until then, check out our our audio archives which includes our last show with pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to the Jazz Standard from June 2-7, with a trio the first 3 days and his Evolution ensemble the last 3 days.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at The Stone with Roy Nathanson on June 3.

Bassist Bob Cranshaw is at An Beal Bocht Café in the Bronx with drummer Joe Farnsworth’s quartet on June 3.

Drummer JT Lewis is at Nublu on the Lower East Side with Harriet Tubman on June 5.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at The Cutting Room for an album release party on June 6th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Aché at Subrosa with the legendary Candido as special guest on percussion on June 7.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at Symphony Space on June 10.

Vocalist Dianne Reeves headlines the National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s benefit concert at Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse on June 10th.

Pianist Randy Weston, saxophonist Billy Harper, and bassist Alex Blake will be at Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center on June 11th performing “The Roots of the Blues”.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and poet Jessica Care Moore are at the Apollo Theater with Black Women Rock on June 12

Harpist Brandee Younger will be at The Cell Theatre on June 13th.

On the Bandstand: May 11, 2014 Edition

bandstand_picSuga in My Bowl radio presents a new feature, On The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests.

This week’s show is a special spring fund drive broadcast, but there are plenty of live music listings.

On May 13th, Pianist Vijay Iyer will appear at The Stone.

On May 14th, drummer Bobby Sanabria appears at Zinc Bar in Manhattan with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble. On the 17th, he leads the Multiverse Big Band in a show at Orchard Beach in The Bronx

Organist John Medeski will be at Stage 48 in Manhattan with the M&M’s including Thurston Moore on May 15th.

Vocalist René Marie leads a group at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 15th to the 18th.

Poets Sonia Sanchez and Jessica Care Moore join many other performers in a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Café on May 17th and the show is free.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at the Players Club on May 18th as special guest with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks.

Trombonist Craig Harris leads the Harlem Night Songs Big Band in a set of Sun Ra’s music on May 18th at Harlem’s Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church. Details are on Harris’s website.

Looking further ahead, Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on May 21st.

On the Bandstand: March 23rd, 2014 Edition

This week’s guest, guitarist, vocalist, and Motéma Records head Jana Herzen, doesn’t have any immediate upcoming shows, but we’ll bring you anything we hear about and you can keep tabs on her at Motéma.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 24th and 31st. She also appears at Jersey City’s Liberty House Restaurant with the Kelsey Morrow Group on the 27th and leads a quartet at Showman’s on the 28th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears with the Robert Hurst Quintet at the Jazz Standard on March 25th and 26th.

On the 26th, pianist Harold Mabern appears with the John Webber Quartet’s Wes Montgomery tribute at Smalls Jazz club.

nbwcBannerThere are several former Suga’ guests appearing at the National Black Writer’s Conference at Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College, including poet Jessica Care Moore, pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs, journalist Herb Boyd, writer and professor Michele Wallace, and poet, educator, and activist Sonia Sanchez. If any of this sounds good, full schedule details are on the conference website, as is pre-registration, which ends Wednesday the 26th and is a good idea, since it saves some money on admission.

You have 2 chances to catch guitarist Pat Metheny’s Unity Band this week. They’re in Fairfield CT at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts on the 25th and in New York at the Town Hall Theater on the 28th. For those of you outside the listening area, Metheny’s website also has links for their entire tour, which will cover much of the US and Europe.

Looking further ahead, bassist Alex Blake will be with percussionist Neil Clarke’s trio at Sista’s Place in Bedford Stuyvestant on April 5th as part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s annual spring festival (link opens a PDF).
