On the Bandstand: April 30, 2015 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Low brass specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley appears with Hazmat Modine at Iridium on April 27 and Terra Blues on May 2nd and 16th.

Trombonist Dick Griffin will be with Joe McPhee’s Trio at Arts for Art’s monthlong “Our Earth/Our World” festival of musicians, poets, and visual artists at Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side on April 29.

Vocalist Nona Hendryx, is at Harlem Stage on April 30 and May 1 in “Parallel Lives: Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf.”

Poet Sonia Sanchez is at The City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall in Harlem on May 2nd for a tribute to visual artist Elizabeth Catlett. The show is free with RSVP.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at Minton’s on May 4th and Mondays in May with Charenee Wade’s septet.

Harpist Brandee Younger will be at Harlem Stage on May 5th.

Drummer Michael Carvin will be at the Jazz Standard on May 5-6th.

Bassist Mimi Jones leads a band at Smoke on May 7.

Saxophonist Billy Harper leads a quintet at Smoke on May 8-10.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band at the City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall in Harlem on May 9th as part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival.

Pianist Marc Cary and saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin are at the Apollo Theater with Jason Moran on May 9th.

WBAI Radio is a media sponsor of Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s month-long jazz festival from April 17-May 17 at various Brooklyn locations.

On the Bandstand: March 22, 2015 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. This week’s guest on the radio is vocalist Carmen Lundy! She has no immediate area shows, but as usual, we’ll keep you in the loop for when she comes to town. Meanwhile, we have some upcoming gigs — and another chance to get some free tickets if you act fast.

We start with another ticket giveaway for the Schomburg Library’s Women’s Jazz Festival on March 23rd! We have four tickets to the Great Women of Blues and Jazz show curated by Toshi Reagon and featuring bassist Mimi Jones for our fans and supporters!! Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts hosts a listening session of some of his favorite music at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on March 25th.

Guitarist Marc Ribot will be at Greenwich House in Manhattan’s Uncharted Series on the 26th.

Pianist Geri Allen, bassist Mimi Jones, and saxophonist Tia Fuller are all part of the line-up in a free concert at Rutgers University’s Newark NJ campus on the 26th.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads her New Yor-Uba ensemble at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 27-29th.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs is at Kitano on March 28th.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson will be at William Patterson University’s Shea Center for the Performing Arts in Patterson, New Jersey on March 29th.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin leads her Soulsquad at the Schomburg on March 30th with vocalist Catherine Russell to wrap up their Women’s Jazz Festival. We’ll have another ticket giveaway next weekend for this show! Check back for details.

Randy Weston will lead his African Rhythms Sextet with bassist Alex Blake at the Jazz Standard from April 2nd-5th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet with bassist Mimi Jones at Smoke from April 3rd-5th.

This week’s live guest is drummer Bobby Sanabria. You can catch him as part of the orchestra in a free performance of Larry Harlow’s Hommy: A Latin Opera at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors series in Damrosch Park on July 23rd. Later this summer, he’ll also be leading a band in a free outdoor performance at Grant’s Tomb on July 30th as part of the Jazzmobile series. This week’s light, music-wise, but we still have a few listings for you.

Pianist Harold Mabern is at the Village Vanguard from July 8th to the 13th with guitarist Peter Bernstein’s Quartet. He leads a trio at Small’s on July 16th.

Looking ahead, pianist Marc Cary leads the Focus Trio in a free outdoor concert at Bushnell Park in downtown Hartford CT on July 14th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads an ensemble at Iridium on July 18 and 19.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY on July 19.

Lastly, looking even further ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny leads his Unity Group at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on August 8th. We’ll have reminders as the show gets closer, but it’s a good idea to pick up tickets early before they sell out.

On the Bandstand: March 30, 2014 Edition

TThe show is off the air this week for our end-of-the-month break, but there’s still some live music, so let’s dig in.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 31st and April 7th. She’ll also be at the Garage Restaurant with her trio on April 4th and as part of the Gerald Hayes Trio on the 5th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads a quartet at the legendary (and now re-opened) Minton’s in Harlem on April 9th.

Later on that night at Minton’s, Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet in a late set.

Looking further ahead, bassist Alex Blake will be with percussionist Neil Clarke’s trio at Sista’s Place in Bedford Stuyvestant on April 5th as part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s annual spring festival (link opens a PDF).

On the Bandstand: January 12th, 2014 Edition

We have some sad news to share also: poet, activist, writer, and jazz journalist Amiri Baraka has died. We interviewed him in 2011 and had planned to do a special show with him in 2014 looking back at his life in music. You can hear the show we did in Suga’ in My Bowl’s audio archives (scroll down the page).



Amiri’s wake and funeral will both be held in Newark, NJ. The Wake is Friday, January 17 from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at Metropolitan Baptist Church 149 Springfield Avenue, 07103. 973.642.2267

The Funeral is on Saturday, the 18th 10:00am at Newark Symphony Hall 1020 Broad Street. 973.643.8014.

Both locations are reachable by mass transit from New York City and it goes without saying that you should get there very early to be sure to get inside. Save the date: we received news at press time that there will be a memorial at the Schomburg on February 8th. We’ll provide more concrete details when we receive them.

We start this week’s listings with drummer Will Calhoun leads a trio at Iridium with pianist Marc Cary on Monday, January 13th.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga also has a show on the 13th at Kotobuki Restaurant in Manhattan and next Monday the 20th.

Pianist Diane Schuur leads an ensemble at Birdland from the 13th to the 18th.

Bassist Christian McBride leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from the 14th to the 19th.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs appears at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAMCafe for free shows on the 17th and 18th.

Drummer Michael Carvin leads an ensemble at Jazz on the Mountain at the Mohonk Mountain House from the 17th to 19th near Bear Mountain.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on Sunday the 19th.
