Drummer Bobby Sanabria returns to the WBAI studio as this week’s live guest. You can catch him as part of the orchestra in a free performance of Larry Harlow’s Hommy: A Latin Opera at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors series in Damrosch Park on July 23rd. Later this summer, he’ll also be leading a band in a free outdoor performance at Grant’s Tomb on July 30th as part of the Jazzmobile series and at a free performance in Marcus Garvey Park on August 13 as part of the Summerstage series. And there are other opportunities to catch music this week.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on July 16th.

Pianist Marc Cary leads the Focus Trio in a free outdoor concert at Bushnell Park in downtown Hartford CT on July 14th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads an ensemble at Iridium on July 18 and 19.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY on July 19.

Lastly, looking further ahead, Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Village Vanguard from July 22nd to 27th with drummer Rudy Royston’s Sextet.

On the Bandstand: May 25, 2014 Edition

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week for the last Sunday of the month. We’ll be back with a new show on June 1st to wrap up WBAI’s spring fund drive. If you missed our Amiri Baraka premium, you can still pick one up with a pledge to WBAI. Until then, we’ll point you to our audio archives for your Sunday night fix. But the music goes on, so we’ve got listings.

Pianist Randy Weston leads his African Rhythms Quartet with bassist Alex Blake at the Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn on May 31st.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at the Village Vanguard from May 27th-June 1st.

Trombonist Steve Turre is at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club on May 30 – 31.

Tubist Howard Johnson will perform at the Eric Dolphy Jazz Fest in Montclair, NJ on May 30th.

Those up for a longer roadtrip might want to check out vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and saxophonist Tia Fuller at Cape May NJ’s Exit Zero Jazz Fest, also on May 30th.

Drummer Will Calhoun is at City Winery with Living Colour on June 2nd.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads his Trio Plus ensemble at BB King’s on June 3rd.

Looking further ahead, the big news on the horizon is the start of the Blue Note Jazz Festival which we mentioned last week, and spans the entire month of June at several venues. We’ll have a fuller post on that alone and weekly updates, but there are a few early shows for Suga’ fans to keep an eye on:

Bassist Christian McBride will team up with André Previn for duets at the Blue Note from June 6-8.

Pianist Harold Mabern will also be at the Blue Note with Saxophonist Eric Alexander for early afternoon jazz brunch shows on June 8th.

We’re eagerly looking forward to Arts for Art’s Vision Fest at Brooklyn’s Roulette and will have more coverage as the date draws closer.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week and next because of WBAI’s spring fund drive and will be back with a new show on June 1st. It’s a good excuse to check out our audio archives where we have an entire 4 years of shows for your Sunday night fix. But the music goes on, so we’ve got listings for you.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on May 21st.

Bassist Christian McBride joins the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at JALC’s Rose Theater on May 22nd and 23rd.

Though summer seems far off, the line-ups of some early NYC area jazz festivals and music series that feature jazz have been announced. In June, Arts for Art’s Vision Fest continues at Brooklyn’s Roulette and the Blue Note Jazz Fest returns at different venues. Those looking for free performances should check out NYC Parks’s Summerstage and Brooklyn’s Celebrate Brooklyn series in Prospect Park. We’ll have a fuller roundup of events later on in a separate post, but now’s a good time to start scanning the schedules.

On the Bandstand: May 4, 2014 Edition

This week’s guests are past and present members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Currently under the direction of Marshall Allen, they’re on a tour celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ra’s arrival on Planet Earth. You can see one guest, Ahmed Abdullah, whose Diaspora ensemble will be playing Sun Ra’s music at 2 Brooklyn gigs this week. Catch them at Sista’s Place on Saturday May 10th or the Shapeshifter lab on Sunday the 11th.

Columbia University Professor and writer Dr. Farah Jasmine Griffin will be part of a conversation about Charlie Parker’s life and legacy at Minton’s on Monday May 5th.

And Wednesday the 7th is unusually busy this week.

On Wednesday, Drummer Kim Thompson appears at Showman’s Jazz Club.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears at Minton’s with the “3SUM” group.

And, finally, pianist Vijay Iyer has is at The Stone. He also has a free performance—that’s right, free—at the City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall on Friday May 9th. You need to reserve tickets in advance for Friday, which you can do at the Harlem Stage website.

Also on Friday the 9th, drummer Bobby Sanabria leads his Multiverse Big Band in a daytime show at the Apollo Theater and Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and Drummer Michael Carvin have a late show at the Apollo Café.

Many of these events are part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines festival.

Organist John Medeski will be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY with The Word on Mayday: May 1st. The Capitol Theatre’s a short walk from Port Chester’s Metro-North station.

You can catch this week’s guest, poet Jesus Papoleto Meléndez at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café on Wednesday the 23rd. He’ll be one of many poets and musicians appearing at a celebration for poet Steve Cannon.

Vocalist Catherine Russell performs George Gershwin’s music at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 23rd and 24th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears at Western Connecticut State University on the 25th and 26th, leading a quartet and the Village Vanguard Big Band.

Several Suga’ guests will be appearing at the Guggenheim Museum as part of artist Carrie Mae Weems’ event series from the 25th to the 27th, including poet and singer Carl Hancock Rux, trombonist Craig Harris, and Dick Griffin.

This week’s show is on Langston Hughes’s jazz poetry with Hughes biographer Dr. Arnold Rampersad, but there’s other live music to see as the New York metro area finally takes a turn toward spring, so let’s dig in!

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on April 7th and 14th. She’ll also be at the Garage Restaurant with her trio on April 4th and as part of the Gerald Hayes Trio on the 5th. She’ll also be at Showman’s in Harlem on April 11th.

Pianist Marc Cary will be with the Namaskar group at Brooklyn’s Art Café Gureje on the 9th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads a quartet at the legendary (and now re-opened) Minton’s in Harlem on April 9th.

Later on that night at Minton’s, Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet in a late set.

Vocalist Andy Bey will be at the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center with a Cabaret Jazz show on April 10th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be performing with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble at the Lighthouse in Manhattan on the 12th.

Lastly, reminder that the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s annual spring festival (link opens a PDF) is going on for the rest of April. This week’s guest, guitarist, vocalist, and Motéma Records head Jana Herzen, doesn’t have any immediate upcoming shows, but we’ll bring you anything we hear about and you can keep tabs on her at Motéma.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 24th and 31st. She also appears at Jersey City’s Liberty House Restaurant with the Kelsey Morrow Group on the 27th and leads a quartet at Showman’s on the 28th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears with the Robert Hurst Quintet at the Jazz Standard on March 25th and 26th.

On the 26th, pianist Harold Mabern appears with the John Webber Quartet’s Wes Montgomery tribute at Smalls Jazz club.

nbwcBannerThere are several former Suga’ guests appearing at the National Black Writer’s Conference at Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College, including poet Jessica Care Moore, pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs, journalist Herb Boyd, writer and professor Michele Wallace, and poet, educator, and activist Sonia Sanchez. If any of this sounds good, full schedule details are on the conference website, as is pre-registration, which ends Wednesday the 26th and is a good idea, since it saves some money on admission.

You have 2 chances to catch guitarist Pat Metheny’s Unity Band this week. They’re in Fairfield CT at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts on the 25th and in New York at the Town Hall Theater on the 28th. For those of you outside the listening area, Metheny’s website also has links for their entire tour, which will cover much of the US and Europe.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on Monday the 20th.

Also on Monday the 20th, pianist pianist Marc Cary appears with the Namaskar ensemble at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

Harpist Brandee Younger’s Quartet performs a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Flushing Branch at 1:30 PM on January 25th.

Looking further ahead, saxophonist Kenny Garrett appears at the Celebration of Jazz Saxophones at Rutgers University Newark’s Paul Robeson Campus Center on Tuesday January 28th.

Looking even further ahead, a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka featuring poet Sonia Sanchez and pianist Randy Weston will be held at the Schomburg on Saturday, February 8th. It’s probably a good idea to reserve tickets very early.
