On the Bandstand: December 7, 2014 Edition

Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new weekly feature, On The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests.

Program note: Suga’ in My Bowl has changed to a biweekly schedule on WBAI Radio and will now alternate Sunday nights with Sports Qualified at our usual 11 PM -1 AM time period. You’ll get the same great show; just every other week! So mark your calendars or just keep up with us via our Facebook page, the blog here, or our main website and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week. To get your fix until then, our audio archives have several years worth of shows: more than enough to keep you occupied for Sunday brunch or while doing laundry, housecleaning, or a good workout. Until then, here’s what other Suga’ guests are doing in the area.

Guitarist Pat Metheny and his Unity Group wraps up a rare week of sets to end their world tour at the Blue Note on December 7th.

Bassist Christian McBride finishes a week at the Village Vanguard with his Inside Straight ensemble on December 7th. He returns with a trio from the 9th to 14th.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson leads a quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on December 7th.

Bassist Reggie Workman will be at the Jazz Standard with saxophonist Azar Lawrence’s Quartet for celebration of Coltrane’s A Love Supreme on December 9th to 10th.

UPenn professor Dr. Guthrie Ramsey will be at HarlemStage on the City College of NY campus on December 11th for a free roundtable discussion on the current state of Black music.

Pianist and vocalist Andy Bey will be at Minton’s in Harlem on the 12th and 13th.

Drummer Michael Carvin will be at Kitano on December 12th to 13th with a release party for his new Flash Forward CD.

Vocalist Carol Maillard and the legendary Sweet Honey in the Rock return to the area for their annual holiday concerts. You can catch them at Brooklyn College’s Performing Arts Center on December 13th and at NJPAC in Newark on the 20th.

Pianist Randy Weston will be the master of ceremonies for a tribute to saxophonist Rene McLean at the Schomburg Center on December 16th. Details are on the Sista’s Place website.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria will be at Baruch College’s Performing Arts Center with Gene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble on December 16th.

Drummer Jeff Tain Watts leads a quartet at the Village Vanguard from December 16th to 21st.

Pianist Vijay Iyer presents “Music for Transformation” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on December 18th to 20th.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at Smoke from the 19th to 22nd as part of their John Coltrane festival.

Low Brass Specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley, returns at Terra Blues on Bleecker Street with Hazmat Modine on December 20th.

Pianist Marc Cary leads his Focus Trio at Minton’s in Harlem on the 21st.

Looking much further ahead, vocalist Catherine Russell and master drummer Michael Carvin will both be appearing at Mohonk Mountain House’s Jazz on the Mountain from January 16-19th, but you need to reserve space now.

Drummer Will Calhoun will be at Irving Plaza with Living Colour on November 28th.

Looking ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny wraps up a world tour with his Unity Group. Catch them for a rare week of sets at the Blue Note from December 2nd-7th.

Saxophonist René McLean will be at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on December 6th.

Harpist Brandee Younger is at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem for the Jazz Vespers on December 7th. Details are at abyssinian.org./

On the Bandstand: September 21, 2014 Edition

This week’s show is a memorial for the late Joe Sample, but there are other opportunities to see Suga’ guests in action.

Saxophonist Billy Harper will be appearing at The Blue Note on September 23rd and 24th with the Cookers.

Also at The Blue Note is Saxophonist Lou Donaldson, who leads a quartet for one night only on September 25th.

Bassist Christian McBride will be out on Long Island at the Sag Harbor Music Festival on September 26th.

You have two chances to see drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria this week. He’ll be at Kitano with singer Antoinette Montague on the 26th and his monthly gigs leading the New School University student Afro Cuban Jazz band at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café starts on the 28th. Look for them last Sunday of the month for the rest of the school year.

Finally, September 27th looks to be a big day, music-wise.

You can catch organist John Medeski at the Town Hall Theater in “Strange and Beautiful: A Celebration of the Music of John Lurie, The Lounge Lizards, and Marvin Pontiac”, which has several other guest performers as well. Info is at thetownhall dot org.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts will be at Le Poisson Rouge with the Paul Bollenbeck Trio.

You can see drummer JT Lewis in action at the Harlemstage Gatehouse on the City College of New York campus with the Harriet Tubman band and singer Cassandra Wilson in a tribute to Henry Threadgill.

This week’s guest is percussionist Steven Kroon. There are no immediate shows to announce, but, as always, we’ll keep you posted. It’s a light music schedule this week, but there are opportunities to see Suga’ guests in action.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz will be appearing at Smoke from September 19th to 21st with the Larry Willis All Stars as part of a tribute to McCoyTyner.

Looking ahead, Saxophonist Billy Harper will be appearing at The Blue Note on September 23rd and 24th with the Cookers.

Suga in My Bowl is off the WBAI airwaves this week for the last Sunday of the month, but set your alarm for next week, when Last Poet Abiodun Oyewole joins us on September 7th! And we have other live music listings for you this week.

Bassist Bob Cranshaw is at Smoke with George Coleman’s Quartet on September 5th and 6th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has a free outdoor concert on September 7th with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY. It’s a short walk from the Metro North Railroad station.

Drummer Billy Cobham appears at the Blue Note to celebrate 40 years of his landmark Spectrum album from September 2nd to 7th.

You can catch harpist Brandee Younger at the historic reopened Minton’s in Harlem on September 7th.

Also at the Blue Note from September 9th to 14th is an all star line-up of saxophonist Pharaoah Sanders, pianist Geri Allen, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, who are gathering for a live album recording session with Odean Pope!

Bassist Christian McBride leads a trio at Birdland from September 9th to 13th.

Legendary drummer Roy Haynes brings his Fountain of Youth band to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from September 11th to 14th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under saxophonist Marshall Allen’s direction flies in from Saturn to land at Roulette in Brooklyn on September 12th.

Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to the Jazz Standard with a trio from September 12th to 14th.

This week’s guest is bassist and educator Dr. Larry Ridley. He has no immediate local appearances, but we’ll keep you posted. And we have other live music listings for you this week.

Drummer Michael Carvin has a release party for his new Flash Forward CD at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s club on August 25th.

You have two chances to catch Blues singer Alexis P. Suter and her band. They’ll be at BB King’s on August 25th and have a free outdoor concert in Ridgefield CT’s Ballard Park on the 28th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at City Winery in a tribute to Billy Preston on August 26th.

Vocalist Diane Schuur will be at Ocean City NJ at the Ocean City Pier on August 27th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor concerts on the horizon. He appears at Marcus Garvey Park for a tribute to drummer Max Roach on August 29th as part of the Jazzmobile series. On September 7th, you can see with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY.

Trombonist Steve Turre is at the Stone on August 30th as part of a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Blue Note from August 29th to 31st.

JT_Lewis_suga_promoThis week’s guest is drummer J.T. Lewis, who will be appearing with Sandra St. Victor at Prospect Park’s Celebrate Brooklyn! series on June 28th. Later this summer, you can also catch him in Damrosch Park on August 8th at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors festival. And if you follow us online, we’ll give you a reminder as the events draw closer.

On the 16th, vocalist and pianist Andy Bey does a solo performance at the Blue Note.

Drummer Teri Lyne Carrington and pianist Geri Allen will be at the Village Vanguard from June 17-22.

Pianist Harold Mabern returns to Small’s on the 18th.

Vocalist Dianne Reeves has a free outdoor concert with the New Haven Symphony at New Haven Green in Connecticut on June 21st.

Many of these events are part of the monthlong Blue Note Jazz Festival, which continues this week with events in several venues.

With the end of WBAI’s spring fund drive, we’re back to regular programming! This week’s guest is Charles Gayle, who you can catch at Arts for Art’s Vision Fest. Gayle is featured on June 11th and the fest runs until the 15th at Brooklyn’s Roulette. And we’ve got plenty of other listings for you this week as well.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater headlines a fundraiser for the National Jazz Museum in Harlem at Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse on June 9th.

Pianist and vocalist Diane Schuur appears at BB Kings on June 10th.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson leads a quartet featuring Hammond Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith at the Blue Note on June 10th and 11th.

Bassist and vocalist Mimi Jones leads a band at Smoke on June 11th.

Pianist Harold Mabern will also be at Smoke with Saxophonist Eric Alexander’s Quartet on June 13th and 14th.

On the 14th, saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin appears at the Blue Note in a late night set.

On the 16th, vocalist and pianist Andy Bey does a solo performance at the Blue Note.

Looking ahead, drummer Teri Lyne Carrington and pianist Geri Allen will be at the Village Vanguard from June 17-22.

Many of these events are part of the monthlong Blue Note Jazz Festival. Of course, the big news this week is the Vision Fest we mentioned at the top of the post. We’ll have special coverage on that in a separate post, so stay tuned.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads his Trio Plus ensemble at BB King’s on June 3rd.

Pianist Randy Weston leads his African Rhythms Quartet with bassist Alex Blake at the Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn on May 31st.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at the Village Vanguard from May 27th-June 1st.

Trombonist Steve Turre is at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club on May 30 – 31.

Tubist Howard Johnson will perform at the Eric Dolphy Jazz Fest in Montclair, NJ on May 30th.

Those up for a longer roadtrip might want to check out vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and saxophonist Tia Fuller at Cape May NJ’s Exit Zero Jazz Fest, also on May 30th.
