Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new weekly feature, On The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests.

This week’s guest is Low Brass Specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley, who returns for the second part of our interview with him. If you like what you hear, you can catch him with Hazmat Modine at Terra Blues on Bleecker Street on December 6th and 20th. Until then, here’s what other Suga’ guests are doing in the area.

Bassist Christian McBride kicks off a 2-week run at the Village Vanguard with his Inside Straight ensemble from December 2nd-7th. He returns with a trio from the 9th to 14th.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson leads a quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from December 4th-7th.

Harpist Brandee Younger will be at HarlemStage on the campus of the City College of NY on December 4th for a free performance at an event honoring writers James Baldwin and Audre Lorde. you can also see her at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem for the Jazz Vespers on December 7th.

Saxophonist René McLean will be at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on December 6th.

Bassist Reggie Workman will be at the Jazz Standard with saxophonist Azar Lawrence’s Quartet for celebration of Coltrane’s A Love Supreme on December 9th to 10th.

UPenn professor Dr. Guthrie Ramsey will be at HarlemStage on the City College of NY campus on December 11th for a free roundtable discussion on the current state of Black music.

Drummer Michael Carvin will be at Kitano on December 12th to 13th with a release party for his new Flash Forward CD.

Vocalist Carol Maillard will be at Brooklyn College’s Performing Arts Center on December 13th for a holiday concert with the legendary Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Pianist Randy Weston will be the master of ceremonies for a tribute to saxophonist Rene McLean at the Schomburg Center on December 16th. Details are on the Sista’s Place website.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria will be at Baruch College’s Performing Arts Center with Gene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble on December 16th.

John Bracey and James Smethurst and their new book SOS–Calling All Black People: A Black Arts Movement Reader. Pianist Harold Mabern will be at Smoke on Monday, November 3rd.

Vocalist René Marie and saxophonist Billy Harper among the acts at Atlantic City’s Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Harper takes the stage with the Cookers on November 7th and Marie performs on the 8th.

Pianist Marc Cary leads his Focus Trio at the Cell Theatre on November 8th and 15th.

Harpist Brandee Younger is at Harlem’s historic, reopened Minton’s on November 9th.

Pianist Randy Weston will be at NYU’s Skirball Center for a performance of the music of James Reece Europe on November 9th and in a panel discussion on the 10th. More details are at NYU’s Institute for African American Affairs.

Speaking of Randy Weston, this week’s the last chance to catch the Visions, Roots, and Rhythms exhibit of visual art inspired by Weston’s musical collaboration with trombonist and composer Melba Liston. It’s at the at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery through November 8th and features work from a number of visual artists, including trombonist (and former Suga’ guest) Dick Griffin.

Trombonist Craig Harris will be at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church in Harlem on November 11th. Call the church for details at 212-283-2928 or check their Facebook page.

Pianist Vijay Iyer will have a pre-concert talk and lead a trio at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts in CT on November 15th.

Looking further ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area with his Unity Group. They’ll be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY on November 19th, Bergen NJ’s Performing Arts Center on the 20th, and The Space in Westbury Long Island on the 21st. Note that Metheny’s shows often sell out early!

Suga in My Bowl is off the WBAI airwaves this week for the last Sunday of the month, but set your alarm for next week, Sunday, October 5th when we’ll be back. This week’s light, music-wise but we dug up a few live music listings for you to look forward to.

Harpist Brandee Younger will be appearing at the reopened historic Minton’s in Harlem on October 5th with her band.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria will be at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble on October 9th .

Bassist Mimi Jones will be appearing at the Upper West Side’s Bar Thalia on October 10th with her band.

Looking further ahead, pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs and drummer Michael Carvin will both have free concerts at the Newark Museum as part of WBGO Radio’s Kids’ Jazz series. Gumbs will appear on October 11th and Carvin will perform on October 18th. Note that while admission is free, you need to have a child with you.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has a free outdoor concert on September 7th with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY. It’s a short walk from the Metro North Railroad station.

Drummer Billy Cobham appears at the Blue Note to celebrate 40 years of his landmark Spectrum album from September 2nd to 7th.

You can catch harpist Brandee Younger at the historic reopened Minton’s in Harlem on September 7th.

Also at the Blue Note from September 9th to 14th is an all star line-up of saxophonist Pharaoah Sanders, pianist Geri Allen, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, who are gathering for a live album recording session with Odean Pope!

Legendary drummer Roy Haynes brings his Fountain of Youth band to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from September 11th to 14th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under saxophonist Marshall Allen’s direction flies in from Saturn to land at Roulette in Brooklyn on September 12th.

Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to the Jazz Standard with a trio from September 12th to 14th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor concerts on the horizon. He appears at Marcus Garvey Park for a tribute to drummer Max Roach on August 29th as part of the Jazzmobile series. On September 7th, you can see with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY.

Trombonist Steve Turre is at the Stone on August 30th as part of a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Blue Note from August 29th to 31st.

This week’s show is on Langston Hughes’s jazz poetry with Hughes biographer Dr. Arnold Rampersad, but there’s other live music to see as the New York metro area finally takes a turn toward spring, so let’s dig in!

She’ll also be at the Garage Restaurant with her trio on April 4th and as part of the Gerald Hayes Trio on the 5th. She’ll also be at Showman’s in Harlem on April 11th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads a quartet at the legendary (and now re-opened) Minton’s in Harlem on April 9th.

Later on that night at Minton’s, Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet in a late set.

Vocalist Andy Bey will be at the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center with a Cabaret Jazz show on April 10th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be performing with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble at the Lighthouse in Manhattan on the 12th.

Lastly, reminder that the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s annual spring festival (link opens a PDF) is going on for the rest of April. It’s all part of Jazz Appreciation Month, culminating in the UN’s International Jazz Day (yes, there is such a thing) on the 30th. The jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra spotlights the music of Saxophonist Kenny Garrett at Jazz at Lincoln Center on February 21st.

Pianist Barry Harris leads a trio in a free concert at the Ebenezer Baptist Church’s Jazz Vespers on February 23rd. They’re at 279 Lafayette Ave in Brooklyn.

Looking further ahead, drummer Roy Haynes‘s Fountain of Youth appears at the Blue Note on February 25th and 26th.

Percussionist Bobby Sanabria appears at the Jazz Church, St. Peter’s, with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble on February 26th.
