On the Bandstand: October 5, 2014

Program note: Suga’ in My Bowl has changed to a biweekly schedule on WBAI Radio and will now alternate Sunday nights with Sports Qualified at our usual 11-1 AM time period. You’ll get the same great show; just every other week! So mark your calendars or just keep up with us via our Facebook page, the blog here, or our main website and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

This week’s guest is Salim Washington on the late Cal Massey. He doesn’t have any local appearances coming up, but there are other opportunities to see Suga’ guests in action.

Vocalist Catherine Russell headlines a benefit concert for the Jazz Drama Program at the Dimenna Center in Manhattan on October 7th.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria will be at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble on October 9th .

Poet, professor, activist, and Black Arts Movement veteran Sonia Sanchez will be at Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College on October 9th as part of a panel discussion on the new book, SOS: Calling Black People — A Black Arts Movement Reader.

Bassist Mimi Jones will be appearing at the Upper West Side’s Bar Thalia on October 10th with her band. She’ll also be at The Lion in Greenwich Village on the 19th.

Looking further ahead, pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs and drummer Michael Carvin will both have free concerts at the Newark Museum as part of WBGO Radio’s Kids’ Jazz series. Gumbs will appear on October 11th and Carvin will perform on October 18th. Note that while admission is free, you need to have a child with you.

Pianist Randy Weston leads his African Rhythms Quintet with bassist Alex Blake at the Manhattan School of Music on October 17th.

On display until November 4th at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery is Visions, Roots, and Rhythms, visual art inspired by the musical collaboration of Randy Weston and Melba Liston. It features work from a number of visual artists, including trombonist (and former Suga’ guest) Dick Griffin.

Lastly, legendary pianist Barry Harris will be at the Flushing Town Hall theater in Queens on October 17th.

On the Bandstand: August 24, 2914 Edition

This week’s guest is bassist and educator Dr. Larry Ridley. He has no immediate local appearances, but we’ll keep you posted. And we have other live music listings for you this week.

Drummer Michael Carvin has a release party for his new Flash Forward CD at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s club on August 25th.

You have two chances to catch Blues singer Alexis P. Suter and her band. They’ll be at BB King’s on August 25th and have a free outdoor concert in Ridgefield CT’s Ballard Park on the 28th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at City Winery in a tribute to Billy Preston on August 26th.

Vocalist Diane Schuur will be at Ocean City NJ at the Ocean City Pier on August 27th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor concerts on the horizon. He appears at Marcus Garvey Park for a tribute to drummer Max Roach on August 29th as part of the Jazzmobile series. On September 7th, you can see with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY.

Trombonist Steve Turre is at the Stone on August 30th as part of a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Blue Note from August 29th to 31st.

Looking ahead, also appearing at the Blue Note, is drummer Billy Cobham, celebrating 40 years of his landmark Spectrum album from September 2nd to 7th.

You can catch harpist Brandee Younger at the historic reopened Minton’s in Harlem on September 7th.

On the Bandstand: May 11, 2014 Edition

This week’s show is a special spring fund drive broadcast, but there are plenty of live music listings.

On May 13th, Pianist Vijay Iyer will appear at The Stone.

On May 14th, drummer Bobby Sanabria appears at Zinc Bar in Manhattan with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble. On the 17th, he leads the Multiverse Big Band in a show at Orchard Beach in The Bronx

Organist John Medeski will be at Stage 48 in Manhattan with the M&M’s including Thurston Moore on May 15th.

Vocalist René Marie leads a group at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 15th to the 18th.

Poets Sonia Sanchez and Jessica Care Moore join many other performers in a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Café on May 17th and the show is free.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at the Players Club on May 18th as special guest with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks.

Trombonist Craig Harris leads the Harlem Night Songs Big Band in a set of Sun Ra’s music on May 18th at Harlem’s Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church. Details are on Harris’s website.

Looking further ahead, Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on May 21st.

You can catch this week’s guest, poet Jesus Papoleto Meléndez at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café on Wednesday the 23rd. He’ll be one of many poets and musicians appearing at a celebration for poet Steve Cannon.

Vocalist Catherine Russell performs George Gershwin’s music at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 23rd and 24th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears at Western Connecticut State University on the 25th and 26th, leading a quartet and the Village Vanguard Big Band.

Several Suga’ guests will be appearing at the Guggenheim Museum as part of artist Carrie Mae Weems’ event series from the 25th to the 27th, including poet and singer Carl Hancock Rux, trombonist Craig Harris, and Dick Griffin.

Looking further ahead, blues singer Alexis P. Suter opens for Johnny Winter at B.B. King’s Blues Club on April 29th.

Saxpohonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the re-opened Minton’s on the 30th. Details are at Mintons’ website.

Looking much further ahead, organist John Medeski will be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY with The Word on Mayday: May 1st. The Capitol Theatre’s a short walk from Port Chester’s Metro-North station.

It’s all part of Jazz Appreciation Month, culminating in the UN’s International Jazz Day (yes, there is such a thing) on the 30th. Percussionist Adam Rudolph conducts the Go Organic Orchestra at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 14th.

Organist John Medeski will be at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on April 14th and 15th with Phil Lesh.

Pianist Marc Cary will be at Smoke Jazz with Duane Eubanks on the 16th.

Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith will be at the Jazz Standard from the 17th to the 20th with both a trio and his “In the Beginning” Octet on various nights.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen will perform on Friday April 18th at DROM on the Lower East Side.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson and organist Akiko Tsuruga will be at Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 18th as part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s Festival.

Saxophonist Billy Harper appears at Iridium with The Cookers on the 18th and 19th.

on the Bandstand: March 9, 2014 Edition

There are no upcoming shows in the New York City metro area for tonight’s guest, Catherine Russell, but check her website for updates and we’ll list anything we hear about here. But there are other shows for you to catch this week.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 10th and 17th.

There’s a free midday event on the legacy of pianist Mary Lou Williams sponsored by Columbia University’s Jazz Studies Institute on the 12th. Pianists Vijay Iyer and Geri Allen join professor Farah Jasmine Griffin to talk about her life and music. It’s from 11 AM to 1 PM in Buell Hall’s East Gallery on Columbia’s campus.

Pianist Geri Allen celebrates Mary Lou Williams with a performance of music and words at Harlem Stage from March 13th to 15th.

Looking ahead to next week, organist John Medeski and pianist Vijay Iyer will be at the Town Hall with John Zorn on March 19th.

Also on the 19th, pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls Jazz club.

Looking much further ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny’s Unity Group has 3 area shows at the end of March to support their new album titled Kin. You can catch them in Red Bank New Jersey at the Count Basie Theater on March 23rd. They’re in Fairfield CT at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts on the 25th and in New York at the Town Hall Theater on the 28th. For those of you outside the listening area, Metheny’s website also has links for their entire tour, which will cover much of the US and Europe. Metheny fans should get tickets right away, as the shows sell out fast.
