On the Bandstand: August 3, 2014 Edition

This week’s guest is Howard University professor Dr. Greg Kimathi Carr with a special on the life of Dr. John Henrik Clarke. It’s a fund drive show, and you can support WBAI (and our show) by donating as little as $5 or pledging for a copy of the Dr. Clarke special on CD. Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from August 5th to 10th.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin has a free outdoor lunchtime concert at Newark, NJ’s Gateway Center Plaza on August 6th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under Marshall Allen’s direction has a free performance at Wagner Park on August 7th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has a free performance in Marcus Garvey Park on August 13 as part of the Summerstage series.

On the Bandstand: May 11, 2014 Edition

This week’s show is a special spring fund drive broadcast, but there are plenty of live music listings.

On May 13th, Pianist Vijay Iyer will appear at The Stone.

On May 14th, drummer Bobby Sanabria appears at Zinc Bar in Manhattan with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble. On the 17th, he leads the Multiverse Big Band in a show at Orchard Beach in The Bronx

Organist John Medeski will be at Stage 48 in Manhattan with the M&M’s including Thurston Moore on May 15th.

Vocalist René Marie leads a group at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 15th to the 18th.

Poets Sonia Sanchez and Jessica Care Moore join many other performers in a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Café on May 17th and the show is free.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at the Players Club on May 18th as special guest with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks.

Trombonist Craig Harris leads the Harlem Night Songs Big Band in a set of Sun Ra’s music on May 18th at Harlem’s Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church. Details are on Harris’s website.

Looking further ahead, Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on May 21st.

Drummer and bandleader Bobby Sanabria Bobby Sanabria and his Multiverse Big Band are at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from November 21st to 24th.

The musical Lady Day continues its run at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St starring vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater as Billie Holiday.




On the 22nd, pianist Michele Rosewoman and her “New Yor-Uba” small ensemble will be at the Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side as part of Arts for Art’s Latin Free Jazz mini-festival.

Harpist Brandee Younger will be at the PAC House Theater4 in New Rochelle, NY on November 23rd.

Finally, organist John Medeski will be at Le Poisson Rouge on November 24th as part of a 78th birthday celebration for Roswell Rudd.

Weston_HarperThe Randy Weston and Billy Harper duo will be at the Iridium on November 26-27th, doing songs from their new The Roots of the Blues release.

Looking much further ahead, Kenny Garrett Will be at the Iridium from December 6th to the 8th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts plays with Niels Lan Doky at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on November 13th and leads a quartet at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 15th.

Harpist Brandee Younger appears with a quartet for free on November 14th, 7 PM, at the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library in their Dweck Center.

Drummer and bandleader Bobby Sanabria appears on November 16th with the Eugene Marlow Heritage Ensemble at the Congregation Adas Emuno in Leonia, NJ.

Craig_HarrisTrombonist and multi-instrumentalist Craig Harris appears on November 17th 3 PM at the Mount Morris Association Presbyterian Church. That’s at 122nd and Mount Morris Park West in Manhattan and admission is less than the price of a movie. Details are on Craig’s website.

Listen_Whitey_coverTonight’s guest, Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey: the Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975 (and an accompanying CD from Light in the Attic Records), will appear at Revolution Books in Manhattan on Monday at 7 and a free event at Brooklyn College’s Student Union Building on Tuesday at 2 PM.

This Tuesday, November 5th, Amiri Baraka will be at the Newark Museum for an event honoring the 50th anniversary of his influential Blues People book. He’ll be joined by several musicians, including (former Suga guest) trombonist Craig Harris.

Vocalist Carol Maillard will be at the at the Tarrytown Music Hall on November 8th as part of the legendary Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Looking ahead, several Suga’ guests will be at Cape May, NJ Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Vocalist Dianne Reeves appears on November 8th. Last month’s guest saxophonist Kenny Garrett and pianist Marc Cary’s Focus Trio take the stage on November 9th.

Dianne Reeves will also be at the Moody Jazz Festival in Newark on November 9th.

The October 13th show was en encore presentation of our guide to the musical history of Brazil, “The Brazilian Journey“, hosted by Dr. Judith King-Calnek, and produced and engineered by Suga’ in My Bowl host Joyce Jones. It’s a 3 CD set on offer for a pledge to WBAI Radio during their fall fund drive. And while I’m at it, I’ll point you to the earlier interview we did with Dr. King-Calnek.

You have 3 chances to see Bobby Sanabria, who hosted our Journey special. He’ll be at the Americas Society at 980 Park Avenue with his Multiverse Big Band for the Music of the Americas concert on October 15th. On the 19th, he’ll appear with the Eugene Marlow Heritage Ensemble for the free “We’ve Got Rhythms Concert” at 2:00 p.m. at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Heights Branch at 280 Cadman Plaza West in Downtown Brooklyn. Finally, on the 24th, he’ll appear with the Eugene Marlow Heritage Ensemble at the historic Nuyorican Poets Café.

Bassist Christian McBride will be at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with a big band and a trio from October 21st to the 27th.

On the Bandstand: September 8th Edition

Our guest for this show, pianist Michele Rosewoman, will be performing with her New Yor-Uba ensemble at Dizzy’s Club on Monday September 30th and Tuesday October 1st.

Suga’ guest and host of our special “The Journey”, Bobby Sanabria, will be at NYC’s Birdland with the Pucci Amanda Jones Quartet for the 6 PM show on September 19th.

Dee Dee Bridgewater stars in the musical Lady Day, based on the life of Billie Holiday. Previews start September 19th and the regular run starts in October at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St.



Pianist Randy Weston will be appearing with his African Rhythms Quartet at the House of the Lord Church at 415 Atlantic Avenue in downtown Brooklyn on Saturday September 21st at 2 PM in a tribute to Dr. John Henrik Clarke sponsored by BEPAA: the Board of Education for People of African Ancestry.
