This week’s guest is guitarist Mary Halvorson. She’ll be at the Village Vanguard on March 11 for an afternoon set with saxophonist John Zorn’s ensemble with bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Marc Ribot. And now on to the rest of the week’s listings:

Harpist Brandee Younger is at the Schomburg Center in Harlem for a tribute to Alice Coltrane as part of their Women’s Jazz Festival on March 5.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the Blue Note with Pete Rock for a late set on March 6.

Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis is at Spectrum in Brooklyn on March 8 for an album release party with Chad Taylor.

Finally, Pianist Marc Cary is at the HarlemStage Gatehouse on March 9 with Mothers of the Movements to remake the Freedom Now Suite with drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and bassist Reggie Workman.

Saxophonist Jane Bunnett and Maqueque are at Birdland on March 13.

Guitarist Bill Frisell leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from March 13-18 and returns the next week with a quartet from March 20-25.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at Kitano with Gene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble on March 14 and leads the Multiverse Big Band in West Side Story Reimagined at Hostos Community College in The Bronx on March 17.

Vocalist Kurt Elling is at Birdland for an album release party for The Questions from March 14-17.

Drummer Roy Haynes celebrates his 93rd birthday at the Blue Note from March 15-18.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a quartet at Smoke from March 16-18 for an 82nd birthday celebration and leads a trio at Smalls on March 21.

This week’s show wraps up our 2018 Winter Jazz Fest preview coverage with vocalist Fay Victor! You have three opportunities to hear her at the Winter Jazz Fest. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is at the Blue Note from January 19-21.

 

Vision Fest promoters Arts for Art’s monthlong Justice is Compassion festival of avant garde jazz, dance, and visual art is going on right now and continues at the Lower East Side’s Clemente Soto Velez Center through January 12 with different sets almost nightly and there’s a lot going on this week.

Bassist William Parker plays on January 8 with JP Carletti’s trio.

Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis has a duo with pianist Aruan Ortiz on January 9.

William Parker’s brilliant, swirling, Songs for a Free World composition with vocalist Fay Victor is on January 10.

Pianist David Virelles performs on January 11.

All sets are at Clemente Soto Velez. There’s a preview further down and you can see the the full schedule here.

 

Also on the horizon is the annual Winter Jazz Fest which returns from January 10-14. This year’s artists in residence is flutist Nicole Mitchell, who’ll have several sets at the festival. Other highlights include talks on sexism in jazz and jazz protest with saxophonist Archie Shepp. There’s a tribute to Alice Coltrane by saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and the usual marathon nights of music on January 12-13. We’ll have more details in the next show and publish our annual cheat sheet and review online. Stay tuned for all of that.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is the headliner at the Bronx Music Heritage Center’s New Year’s eve event on December 31.

Bassist William Parker teams up with drummer William Hooker for a duo set at the Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side on January 3 as part of an Amiri Baraka tribute at Arts for Art’s ongoing Justice is Compassion festival. He also has a set on January 8 with drummer JP Carletti and on the 10th with his expansive “Songs for a Free World” composition.

Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis leads Heroes are Gang Leaders at the Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side on January 3 as part of an Amiri Baraka tribute at Arts for Art’s ongoing Justice is Compassion festival. He’s also there for a duo set with pianist Aruan Ortiz on the 9th.

Saxophonist T.K. Blue has a free lunchtime concert on January 3 at the Gateway 2 center in downtown Newark NJ.

Looking further ahead, Bassist/vocalist Richard Bona leads a group at Club Bonafide on January 5.

Drummer JT Lewis, vocalist Lisa Fischer, pianist Marc Cary, and saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin are all at the Town Hall Theater on October 22 for City Suite.

Finally, the BRIC Arts Media Jazz Fest runs from October 14-21 at their downtown Brooklyn location starting with screenings of the documentary films Chasing Trane and I Called Him Morgan on the 14-15 and ends with 3 marathon nights of music from the 19-21. The Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s Social Science, and pianist Viyay Iyer‘s sextet are all scheduled to appear. We’ll have full info on it next week and a preview is in the works.

Vocalist Kurt Elling is at Birdland for an early set on October 4.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is teaching a 6 session class on the Roots and Rhythms of Latin Jazz at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Swing University on Wednesday nights from October 4 to November 8.

Vision Fest promoters Arts for Art are sponsoring a “Race and Resistance Un-Columbus” weekend festival from October 7-9 at El Taller Latino Americano (215 E 99 St in Manhattan). Drummer Francisco Mora Catlett’s Afrohorn with trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah leads off on the 7th, with sets by poet Jesus Papoleto Melendez and trombonist Craig Harris later that evening. On the 8th, poet Quincy Troupe reads accompanied by guitarist Kelvyn Bell. Multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore has a set later that night. On Monday the 9th, the event wraps up with bassist William Parker’s “Songs of Freedom” featuring dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker and drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun has a CD release event for his Elvin Jones tribute at the Blue Note from the 24-26. Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane joins Calhoun as special guest on the 24th.

Master drummer Michael Carvin is at St. Peter’s Church as part of a musical tribute to the late vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson on the 28th.

Bassist Christian McBride is also at the Jazz Museum to talk about his recording career for part 1 of the Session Stories on January 31st.
