Pianist Marc Cary hosts The Harlem Sessions at Ginny’s Supper Club on Thursdays in August.

Drummer Will Calhoun is with Living Colour on the 17th in a special acoustic set at City Winery or, at the Afropunk Fest in Brooklyn on the 28th.

Bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake are at The Stone from the 17-20 with guitarist Joe Morris.

Pianist Randy Weston leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake at the Jazz in the Valley Festival in Poughkeepsie NY on August 21st. If you miss them there, they’ll be at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Marcus Garvey Park on the 27th.

Trombonist Craig Harris is also at Jazz in the Valley Festival on August 21st.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band at Grant’s Tomb for a free outdoor performance as part of the Jazzmobile series on the 24th.

Vibraphonist Roy Ayers is on the Smooth Jazz Cruise on the 24th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at the Louis Armstrong House and Museum in Queens for a free outdoor performance as part of the Jazzmobile series on the 25th.

Finally, Guitarist Julian Lage is at The Stone with fellow guitarist Nels Cline on the 25th.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. We’re off the air this week, but stop by our archives to get your fix from nearly 7 years of archived shows until next week. Look for us at this year’s Vision Festival, which we’ll be reporting from and previewed last week with drummer Andrew Cyrille, guitarist Marc Ribot, vocalist Lisa Sokolof, pianist Geri Allen, and festival organizer Patricia Nicholson Parker.

The big event is the Vision Festival and WBAI’s a media sponsor. It starts on the 5th with films celebrating the Sun Ra Arkestra at Anthology Film Archives and moves to Judson Memorial Church from the 7-12 with nightly performances highlighting the career of bassist Henry Grimes. Former guests include poet Quincy Troupe, saxophonist Marshall Allen and the Sun Ra Arkestra, pianist Michele Rosewoman, drummer Hamid Drake, and bassist William Parker. The schedule is at Vision’s site.

AZA, the exhibit of drummer Will Calhoun’s visual art collaboration is on display at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx until July 21st. See our review of the show for more details. Calhoun is also at City Winery for an acoustic show with Living Colour on June 8.

Saxophonist David Murray is at the Harlem Afternoon Jazz Series at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church on the 7th.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Jazz Standard from the 7-12.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at BB King’s on the 8th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room from June 8-9.

Trombonist/seashellist Steve Turre is at Smoke with the “Bones of Art” ensemble from the 8-9.

Saxophonist René McLean is at Smoke, joined by fellow saxophonist Gary Bartz for a Jackie McLean tribute from June 10-12.

Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on June 11th.

Vibraphonist Roy Ayers joins Talib Kweli at The Blue Note on June 13th.

Vocalist Rene Marie is at Hunter College’s Kaye Playhouse on the 14th for the National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s annual benefit concert.

Bassist Christian McBride is at The Blue Note from June 14-19th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at the Jazz Standard from June 15-19th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at Smoke on the 15th.

Pianist /Vocalist Andy Bey is at Mezzrow from the 17-18th.

Poet Sonia Sanchez’s and saxophonist Gary Bartz are at The Blue Note for an afternoon show on June 18th.

Saxophonist Kamasi Washington is at Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield for a free Summerstage performance on the 18th as part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival.

Finally, the Blue Note Jazz festival runs throughout the month and has many more shows in addition to the ones highlighted here.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on the 20th.

Bassist Alex Blake and WBAI World of Jazz host Dwight Brewster are at Staten Island’s The Gallery on the 22nd. This event’s part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Drummer and visual artist Will Calhoun is at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx on the 22nd for a performance and reception to open the show of his visual art, which is on display until July 21st.

Pianist/vocalist Andy Bey is at Mezzrow from the 22nd-23rd.

Guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area for a series of shows with bassist Ron Carter. The duo are at Norwalk CT’s Infinity Hall on April 20-21, Cape May NJ’s Exit Zero Jazz Fest on the 23rd, and Newton NJ’s Newton Theater on the 24th.

Also at Exit Zero is vocalist René Marie, who takes the stage on the 23rd.

Poet/vocalist Latasha Nevada Diggs hosts a free tribute to the late poet Jayne Cortez at Highline Ballroom on the 23rd.

Saxophonist “Sweet Poppa” Lou Donaldson has a free outdoor concert at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education Rooftop in the South Bronx on the 23rd.

Jeff Lieberman’s The Amazing Nina Simone documentary film screens at the Lower East Side’s Metrograph Theater on the 23rd.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Ginny’s Supper Club on the 23rd.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights for Jazz Vespers on the 24th. This event’s part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller is at The Blue Note on the 25th with the Berklee Rainbow All Stars.

Pianist Randy Weston leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake in the Dweck Center of the Brooklyn Public Library’s main branch on the 26th. Weston returns to the Dweck Center on the 30th for a talk on the African roots of jazz. These events are part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Looking further ahead, Saxophonist Oliver Lake and bassist Reggie Workman are at Village Vanguard with TRIO3 from April 26-May 1.

Drummer Billy Cobham is at The Blue Note from April 27-May 1 with Donald Harrison.

Drummer Kim Thompson leads a quartet at Zinc Bar on the 29th.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads his DIASPORA band at Sistas’ Place on April 30. This event’s part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Pianist Geri Allen is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on April 30 with Joe Lovano.

Finally, The Red Bull Music Academy has a night of spiritual Jazz featuring Pharoah Sanders, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Kamasi Washington on May 8. The event’s listed as sold out, but details are at the Red Bull Music Academy site and there may be a wait list.

The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen returns to Earth on the 22nd at Brooklyn Bowl.

Vocalist Thana Alexa is at 55 Bar on the 22nd.

The New York Chapter of the AACM’s monthlong 50th anniversary celebration continues at the Community Church of New York on E 35th St with performances on the 23rd featuring Steve and Iqua Colson and bassist Reggie Workman. The series concludes on the 30th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 23rd.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has a free show at the Bronx Music Heritage Center’s Night of the Living Dead Concert on the 24th and performs with Gene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble at the Eldridge St. Synagogue on the 25th.

Drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note from October 24-25th.

Director Carol Bash’s documentary film on pianist Mary Lou Williams, The Lady Who Swings the Band, screens at the ReelSisters film festival on October 25th at LIU’s downtown Brooklyn campus.

Saxphonist Ravi Coltrane is at the Rubin Museum on the 25th and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on the 26th. And Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies on November 4th, where she’s joined by Columbia University Professor Farah Jasmine Griffin.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on October 18th. Pianist Randy Weston presents the Gnawa master musicians of Morocco at New School’s Tishman Auditorium for a performance on the 13th.

We mentioned the BRIC Arts Jazz Fest at the top of the segment and there are other Suga’ guests to keep an eye out for. Harpist Brandee Younger has a set on the 15th and organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith leads his Evolution ensemble on the 16th.

Saxophonists Kamasi Washington and Lakecia Benjamin hit Le Poisson Rouge on the 16th in a preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest. Benjamin leads the Soulsquad and Washington’s band performs tracks from his acclaimed release The Epic.

This week’s show highlights the AACM musicians collective. Their 50th anniversary celebration features talks and performances every Friday night in October starting on the 9th at the Community Church of New York on E 35th St. Full schedule and details are at the AACM New York website. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Bassist Alex Blake is at the Blue Note with vocalist Julie E on September 21.

Director Carol Bash is at HarlemStage on the City College of New York campus for a screening of her Mary Lou Williams documentary The Lady Who Swings the Band on September 22. Pianist Geri Allen and Professor Farah Jasmine Griffin will be on hand also for a performance and discussion.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Palisades in Brooklyn on September 23.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from September 23-24.

Saxophonist Rene McLean is at Smoke with a Jackie McLean tribute from September 23-24.

Drummer Kim Thompson leads a quartet at Zinc Bar on the 24.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at the West Gate Lounge in Nyack NY on the 25th with Larry Harlow’s Latin Legends Band and has a free outdoor show at Pelham Bay Park’s Bartow Pell Mansion in the Bronx at 6 PM on October 2.

Percussionist Steve Kroon will be at Brooklyn’s First Baptist Church of Crown Heights for Jazz Vespers with the Jeff King Band on September 27.

Drummer Jeff Tain Watts leads a quartet at the Jazz Standard from September 24-27 and returns with Yosvany Terry on October 8-10.

Saxophonist Billy Harper is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th with the Josh Evans Big Band for a Roaring Twenties Jazz Age party.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake and legendary bassist Reggie Workman at the Blue Note as TRIO3 from September 29-October 1. Pianist Vijay Iyer joins them as a guest on the 30.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on the 23rd with blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter! Until then, our our audio archives have you covered for your Suga’ fix. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs, including a few free outdoor shows in the dog days of summer.

Drummer Kim Thompson will be at 55 Bar with Mike Stern on the 17, 19, and 24th.

You have several opportunities to catch drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria. He’s at two separate free, outdoor Jazzmobile events this week: leading a big band at Brooklyn Bridge Park on the 17 and with Quarteto Ache at the Louis Armstrong House in Queens on the 20. He wraps up the week at Floridita Restaurant on 125 St on the 21.

Pianist Geri Allen is at the Village Vanguard from the 18th-23rd.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on the 20th at The Gin Fizz.

Percussionist Steve Kroon leads a sextet at The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on August 22.

We wrap up this edition with a preview of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

The festival kicks off with a conversation between Saxophonist Oliver Lake and Rudresh Mahanthappa at the New School in Manhattan on the 20th.

Lake leads his big band in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on the 21st.

The festival returns to Garvey Park on the 22nd, where drummer Jeff Tain Watts leads a quartet, vocalist/pianist Andy Bey performs, and Hammond B3 Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith rounds out the day.

The festival wraps up with performances at Tompkins Square Park on the 23rd. Full info is at the Festival’s website.
