This week’s show is a memorial for the late pianist Connie Crothers, who passed away on August 13. We’re awaiting details for a memorial service, but will definitely announce it here when we hear something. But the music rolls on and artists keep creating, so we have listings for you.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band at Grant’s Tomb for a free outdoor performance as part of the Jazzmobile series on the 24th.
 
Vibraphonist Roy Ayers is on the Smooth Jazz Cruise on the 24th.
 
Pianist Marc Cary hosts The Harlem Sessions at Ginny’s Supper Club on the 25th.
 
Finally, Guitarist Julian Lage is at The Stone with fellow guitarist Nels Cline on the 25th.
 
Percussionist Steve Kroon is at the Louis Armstrong House and Museum in Queens for a free outdoor performance as part of the Jazzmobile series on the 25th at the Side Door in Old Lyme CT on September 3.
 
Poet and vocalist Abiodun Oyewole is at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café at the Acoustic Vibes show on the 26th.
 
Pianist Randy Weston leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Marcus Garvey Park on the 27th.
 
Drummer Will Calhoun is with Living Colour at the Afropunk Fest in Brooklyn on the 28th.
 
Drummer Antonio Sanchez leads his Migration group with vocalist Thana Alexa at The Jazz Standard from September 1-4.

MAC_Power_Trio_smallAllen has teamed with saxophonist David Murray and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington for a combo they’re calling the MAC Power Trio. Their new release is called Perfection. CDs are available for a pledge of only $25.

We’re (finally!) back on air this week with guest Jessica Edwards, director of the Mavis Staples documentary Mavis! It’s screening at City Cinemas’ Village East in Manhattan until February 25th and will be on HBO later in the year. We have six individual tickets to give away for the screenings this week, graciously donated by Village East Cinema. Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on March 1 in the last of a series of shows with pianist McCoy Tyner. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch him and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s classic band in action.
 
Guitarist Marc Ribot is at Lincoln Center’s Atrium on March 3 for a free concert with with Los Cubanos Postizos and the same ensemble will be at Le Poisson Rouge on the 4th.

Drummer Kim Thompson will be at 55 Bar with Mike Stern on the 17, 19, and 24th.

You have several opportunities to catch drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria. He’s at two separate free, outdoor Jazzmobile events this week: leading a big band at Brooklyn Bridge Park on the 17 and with Quarteto Ache at the Louis Armstrong House in Queens on the 20. He wraps up the week at Floridita Restaurant on 125 St on the 21.

Pianist Geri Allen is at the Village Vanguard from the 18th-23rd.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on the 20th at The Gin Fizz.

Percussionist Steve Kroon leads a sextet at The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on August 22.

We wrap up this edition with a preview of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

The festival kicks off with a conversation between Saxophonist Oliver Lake and Rudresh Mahanthappa at the New School in Manhattan on the 20th.

Lake leads his big band in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on the 21st.

The festival returns to Garvey Park on the 22nd, where drummer Jeff Tain Watts leads a quartet, vocalist/pianist Andy Bey performs, and Hammond B3 Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith rounds out the day.

The festival wraps up with performances at Tompkins Square Park on the 23rd. Full info is at the Festival’s website.

Program note: Suga’ in My Bowl has changed to a biweekly schedule on WBAI Radio and now alternates Sunday nights with Sports Qualified at our usual 11 PM -1 AM time period. Vocalist Nona Hendryx will be one of many performers at the Schomburg for a Women’s Jazz Festival tribute to her work on March 9th.

Columbia University professor and writer Farah Jasmine Griffin will be at the Schomburg for a discussion on African American writers and artists in the 1950s on March 11th.

Looking ahead, saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a Quartet at Kitano on March 13th.

Legendary Drummer Roy Haynes celebrates his 90th birthday from March 13-15th at the Blue Note with special guests sitting in every night including guitarist Pat Metheny and bassist Christian McBride on the 13th!

Trombonist Steve Turre will be at Smoke from March 13-15th to celebrate the release of his Spiritman CD.

Looking further ahead, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning re-imagination of the Ellington classic Money Jungle will be performed at the Schomburg on March 16th as part of their Women’s Jazz Festival.
