On the Bandstand: October 11, 2015 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Keep up with us via Facebook, the blog here, or our main website, or Twitter and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on October 18th. If you missed the last show with saxophonist Kamasi Washington, then head on over to our our audio archives for that and much more — especially since he’s in town this week with stops at Brooklyn’s BRIC JazzFest on October 15th and in Manhattan at Le Poission Rouge on the 16th. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some more upcoming gigs.

Pianist Randy Weston presents the Gnawa master musicians of Morocco at New School’s Tishman Auditorium for a performance on the 13th.

We mentioned the BRIC Arts Jazz Fest at the top of the segment and there are other Suga’ guests to keep an eye out for. Harpist Brandee Younger has a set on the 15th and organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith leads his Evolution ensemble on the 16th.

Saxophonists Kamasi Washington and Lakecia Benjamin hit Le Poisson Rouge on the 16th in a preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest. Benjamin leads the Soulsquad and Washington’s band performs tracks from his acclaimed release The Epic.

The New York Chapter of the AACM’s monthlong 50th anniversary celebration continues at the Community Church of New York on E 35th St with performances on the 16th and every Friday in October.

Organist John Medeski is at Webster Hall with The Word on the 16th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at Minton’s in Harlem on the 17th and Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 23rd.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has a free show at the Brooklyn Heights Library at 2 PM on October 17th.

Bassist Alex Blake and WBAI Producer Dwight Brewster are at the Staten Island Jazz Festival with Dr. Mambo and the Experience Ensemble at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on the 17th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen returns to Earth on the 22nd at Brooklyn Bowl.

Vocalist Thana Alexa is at 55 Bar on the 22nd.

Drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note from October 24-25th.

Director Carol Bash’s documentary film on pianist Mary Lou Williams, The Lady Who Swings the Band, screens at the ReelSisters film festival on October 25th at LIU’s downtown Brooklyn campus.

Saxphonist Ravi Coltrane is at the Rudin Museum on the 25 and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on the 23rd with blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter! Until then, our our audio archives have you covered for your Suga’ fix. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs, including a few free outdoor shows in the dog days of summer.

Drummer Kim Thompson will be at 55 Bar with Mike Stern on the 17, 19, and 24th.

You have several opportunities to catch drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria. He’s at two separate free, outdoor Jazzmobile events this week: leading a big band at Brooklyn Bridge Park on the 17 and with Quarteto Ache at the Louis Armstrong House in Queens on the 20. He wraps up the week at Floridita Restaurant on 125 St on the 21.

Pianist Geri Allen is at the Village Vanguard from the 18th-23rd.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on the 20th at The Gin Fizz.

Percussionist Steve Kroon leads a sextet at The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on August 22.

We wrap up this edition with a preview of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

The festival kicks off with a conversation between Saxophonist Oliver Lake and Rudresh Mahanthappa at the New School in Manhattan on the 20th.

Lake leads his big band in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on the 21st.

The festival returns to Garvey Park on the 22nd, where drummer Jeff Tain Watts leads a quartet, vocalist/pianist Andy Bey performs, and Hammond B3 Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith rounds out the day.

The festival wraps up with performances at Tompkins Square Park on the 23rd. Full info is at the Festival’s website.

This week’s show features Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter! She has no immediate area appearances, but plays NYC metro area venues often, so we’ll keep you posted. And we have more music — including a few free outdoor shows — to get you through the last weeks of summer, so let’s dive in.

Trombonist Craig Harris is quietly curating a serious Tuesday afternoon lunchtime jazz series in Harlem. On the 11th, saxophonist Rene McLean does 2 sets at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church starting at 12 noon.

Legendary drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note August 11-12.

Vibraphonist Roy Ayers appears in a free outdoor concert at Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on the 12th as part of the Summerstage series.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on the 13th at The Gin Fizz in Harlem.

Looking ahead, vocalist Catherine Russell is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 13-16th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Iridium with Network Trio from August 13-16.

Bassist Christian McBride is at the Montclair Jazz Festival in NJ on the 15th.

Drummer Kim Thompson will be at 55 Bar with Mike Stern on the 17, 19, and 24th.

Pianist Geri Allen is at the Village Vanguard from the 18th-23rd.

We wrap up this edition with a preview of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

Pianist Randy Weston’s African Rhythms Trio with bassist Alex Blake headlines Medgar Evers College’s Jazzy Jazz Festival in a free performance at their Brooklyn campus on July 10. Details are at the Medgar Evers College website.

Low brass specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley is be at the Beacon Jazz Festival on July 25 with the International Brass and Membrane Corps.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on July 12. Until then, the big news this week is the kickoff of this year’s Vision Festival. If you missed last week’s show, now’s a good time to hit our our audio archives, since it was a preview of this year’s Vision. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

We wrap up this week with your 20th Vision Festival round-up. Sunday July 5 features films at Anthology Film Archives and there’s a conference on Monday July 6 at Columbia University’s Buell Hall at 116 and Broadway. Performances run from Tuesday July 7 to Sunday July 12 at the historic Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Sq South. And you can hear Douglas R. Ewart, William Parker, Patricia Nicholson Parker, The Sun Ra Arkestra with Marshall Allen, Craig Harris, David Murray, Charles Gayle, Joe Daley, and many more. We’ll have a full preview in a separate post and ongoing coverage here. WBAI radio is proud to be a media sponsor of the festival this year.

Pianist Barry Harris kicks off Jazzmobile’s season with a free outdoor concert at Grant’s Tomb on July 8.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor shows in the Bronx. Catch him at Co-Op City with Antionette Montague on July 8 and with Asencion at Middletown Road and Stadium Ave in Pelham Bay Park on the 10th.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun will be in an outdoor concert at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park on July 4, as Living Colour headlines the International African Arts Festival. There’s a small donation for entrance to the festival.

The big jazz news last week was the passing of saxophone great Ornette Coleman. There’s a memorial service for him on June 27 at Riverside Church. Details are in our previous post, along with a memorial for percussionist Jerome Cooper, whose memorial event is on June 30 at Roulette.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake leads his Organ Quartet at the Blue Note on June 22 as part of the Blue Note Jazz Fest.

Pianist Harold Mabern sits in with saxophonist George Coleman at Smoke from June 19-21 and leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from June 23-28.

Percussionist Adam Rudolph is at The Stone on June 24 with guitarist James Blood Ulmer.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Minton’s on June 26-27 and at the Harlem Arts Festival in Marcus Garvey Park on the 28.

Bassist Alex Blake, drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria, and vocalist Thana Alexa all are at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center (at the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s campus) for the Made in New York Jazz Gala on June 27th.

Poet Abiodun Oyewole is at The Stone with The Last Poets on June 27th.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz and bassist Christian McBride will be in Saratoga Springs NY on June 27th for the Freihofer’s Jazz Festival.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at Birdland from June 30-July 4.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the Newark Museum on July 2 for a free outdoor lunchtime concert as part of their Jazz in the Garden series.

We’ll have more details next time and a preview in a separate post, but the next big thing on the horizon is the 20th Vision Festival, which kicks off a week of avant garde jazz, visual art, poetry, talks, and films on July 5.

Suga’ in My Bowl returns to the air this week to bring you an interview with Grammy Award-winning drummer Antonio Sanchez! You can hear him and the Migration band at a release party for their Meridian Suite CD at Subculture on June 19th, which also features vocalist Thana Alexa. As always, we have more music for you this week.

Saxophonist David Murray leads a trio at the Blue Note with pianist Geri Allen and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington on June 15-17 as part of the Blue Note Jazz Fest.

Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Blue Note on June 16 for the Jazz Journalists’ Association’s annual awards celebration, which honors pianist Randy Weston, trombonist Steve Turre, and bassist Christian McBride, among others. The event is open to the public.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band at the City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall in Harlem on May 9th as part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival.

Trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with the Purchase Jazz Orchestra on April 20.
