On the Bandstand: May 18, 2014 Edition

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week and next because of WBAI’s spring fund drive and will be back with a new show on June 1st. If you missed our Amiri Baraka premium, you can still pick one up with a pledge to WBAI. It’s a good excuse to check out our audio archives where we have an entire 4 years of shows for your Sunday night fix. But the music goes on, so we’ve got listings for you.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on May 21st.

Bassist Christian McBride joins the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at JALC’s Rose Theater on May 22nd and 23rd.

3789796335_8b2a0bb581_qPianist Randy Weston’s African Rhythms Quintet with bassist Alex Blake and saxophonist Billy Harper performs at the Jazz Standard from May 22nd to 25th. On May 31st, Weston will also lead an African Rhythms Quartet with bassist Alex Blake at the Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn.

Looking further ahead, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at the Village Vanguard from May 27th-June 1st.

Tubist Howard Johnson will perform at the Eric Dolphy Jazz Fest in Montclair, NJ on May 30th.

Those up for a longer roadtrip might want to check out vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and saxophonist Tia Fuller at Cape May NJ’s Exit Zero Jazz Fest, also on May 30th.

Though summer seems far off, the line-ups of some early NYC area jazz festivals and music series that feature jazz have been announced. In June, Arts for Art’s Vision Fest continues at Brooklyn’s Roulette and the Blue Note Jazz Fest returns at different venues. Those looking for free performances should check out NYC Parks’s Summerstage and Brooklyn’s Celebrate Brooklyn series in Prospect Park. We’ll have a fuller roundup of events later on in a separate post, but now’s a good time to start scanning the schedules.

On the Bandstand: April 13, 2014 Edition

This week’s show focuses on the late Amiri Baraka, but we still have other listings for you this week.

Percussionist Adam Rudolph conducts the Go Organic Orchestra at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 14th.

Organist John Medeski will be at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on April 14th and 15th with Phil Lesh.

Pianist Marc Cary will be at Smoke Jazz with Duane Eubanks on the 16th.

Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith will be at the Jazz Standard from the 17th to the 20th with both a trio and his “In the Beginning” Octet on various nights.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen will perform on Friday April 18th at DROM on the Lower East Side.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson and organist Akiko Tsuruga will be at Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 18th as part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s Festival.

Saxophonist Billy Harper appears at Iridium with The Cookers on the 18th and 19th.

Speaking of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, their annual spring festival (link opens a PDF) is going on for the rest of April. It’s all part of Jazz Appreciation Month, culminating in the UN’s International Jazz Day (yes, there is such a thing) on the 30th. Details at the hyperlink of you’re interested and want to help preserve the tradition and help create awareness of the music.

Looking ahead, Vocalist Catherine Russell performs George Gershwin’s music at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 23rd and 24th.

On the Bandstand: March 23rd, 2014 Edition

This week’s guest, guitarist, vocalist, and Motéma Records head Jana Herzen, doesn’t have any immediate upcoming shows, but we’ll bring you anything we hear about and you can keep tabs on her at Motéma.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 24th and 31st. She also appears at Jersey City’s Liberty House Restaurant with the Kelsey Morrow Group on the 27th and leads a quartet at Showman’s on the 28th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears with the Robert Hurst Quintet at the Jazz Standard on March 25th and 26th.

On the 26th, pianist Harold Mabern appears with the John Webber Quartet’s Wes Montgomery tribute at Smalls Jazz club.

nbwcBannerThere are several former Suga’ guests appearing at the National Black Writer’s Conference at Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College, including poet Jessica Care Moore, pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs, journalist Herb Boyd, writer and professor Michele Wallace, and poet, educator, and activist Sonia Sanchez. If any of this sounds good, full schedule details are on the conference website, as is pre-registration, which ends Wednesday the 26th and is a good idea, since it saves some money on admission.

You have 2 chances to catch guitarist Pat Metheny’s Unity Band this week. They’re in Fairfield CT at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts on the 25th and in New York at the Town Hall Theater on the 28th. For those of you outside the listening area, Metheny’s website also has links for their entire tour, which will cover much of the US and Europe.

Looking further ahead, bassist Alex Blake will be with percussionist Neil Clarke’s trio at Sista’s Place in Bedford Stuyvestant on April 5th as part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s annual spring festival (link opens a PDF).

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on Monday the 20th.

Also on Monday the 20th, pianist pianist Marc Cary appears with the Namaskar ensemble at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga has a regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. She’ll be there on the 20th and 27th. She also has gigs this week at Londel’s Supper Club on the 24th and Showman’s on the 25th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on January 22nd to promote his new Right on Time release.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads the Watts Family Reunion Band at the Jazz Standard from the 22nd to the 25th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer leads a trio at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 24th and 25th.

Harpist Brandee Younger’s Quartet performs a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Flushing Branch at 1:30 PM on January 25th.

Looking further ahead, saxophonist Kenny Garrett appears at the Celebration of Jazz Saxophones at Rutgers University Newark’s Paul Robeson Campus Center on Tuesday January 28th.

Looking even further ahead, a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka featuring poet Sonia Sanchez and pianist Randy Weston will be held at the Schomburg on Saturday, February 8th. It’s probably a good idea to reserve tickets very early.

On Friday the 6th, she’ll be at the Honeycomb Playhouse Speakeasy at 735A St. Nicholas Ave (at 147th St.), and you can catch her Saturday night at Showman’s on West 125th St.

Harpist Brandee Younger appears with a quartet for free on November 14th, 7 PM, at the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library in their Dweck Center.

Drummer and bandleader Bobby Sanabria appears on November 16th with the Eugene Marlow Heritage Ensemble at the Congregation Adas Emuno in Leonia, NJ.

Craig_HarrisTrombonist and multi-instrumentalist Craig Harris appears on November 17th 3 PM at the Mount Morris Association Presbyterian Church. That’s at 122nd and Mount Morris Park West in Manhattan and admission is less than the price of a movie. Details are on Craig’s website.

Tonight’s guest, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, is currently touring Europe to support his new Pushing the World Away release, but look for him on November 9th at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival in Cape May, NJ.

Dee Dee Bridgewater stars in the musical Lady Day, based on the life of Billie Holiday. Now in previews, with the regular run starting in October at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St.

Pianist Geri Allen performs a series of concerts featuring the Afro Blue Vocal Ensemble of Duke Ellington’s “Three Black Kings” in honor of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and the State Theater in New Brunswick from September 27th to 29th. Geri Allen also appears with the Marcus Belgrave Quartet at the Jazz Standard on October 1.

Organist John Medeski has 3 upcoming area shows with John Zorn. They’ll be at Columbia University’s Miller Theater on September 27th and have 7:30 and 10:30 PM shows at Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge club on Bleecker St on the 29th.

Vocalist Dianne Reeves will be at the Tarrytown Music Hall on September 28th.

Organist (and Dr. Lonnie Smith student) Akiko Tsuruga and her Trio will be appearing at the Garage on September 28th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer has 3 upcoming appearances at the Alexander Kasser Theater at Montclair State University in New Jersey. There’s a free talk on October 2nd and performances of his “Open City” large ensemble on the 4th and 5th.

Last show’s guest, pianist Michele Rosewoman, will be performing with her New Yor-Uba ensemble at Dizzy’s Club on Monday September 30th and Tuesday October 1st.

Bassist Reggie Workman will be at the Jazz Standard as part of an ensemble celebrating Art Blakey’s legacy on October 3rd through 6th.

Finally, Dizzy’s Club presents the Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen in “Sun Ra Turns 100” on October 5th.

On the Bandstand: August 19, 2013 edition

Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new feature, The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. Here are the listings from tonight’s show on WBAI Radio that featured an interview with master drummer and teacher Michael Carvin.

There are no upcoming shows for tonight’s guest, Michael Carvin, but keep an eye on his website for shows in the late fall and a CD release scheduled for early 2014.

No Suga’ guests upcoming at Jazzmobile, but you should check out the full schedule of free concerts that runs through the end of the month.

We have a few shows coming up this week as summer winds down.

The Billy Hart Quartet will be at NYC’s Birdland from August 20-24.

Drummer Kim Thompson will be leading a group at Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on Saturday August 24th as part of the annual Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. Saturday’s set runs from 3-7 PM and also has performances by Kenny Garrett, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and Jaleel Shaw. The festival runs from the Friday to Sunday, the 23rd to 25th at Garvey and Tompkins Square Parks and has a performance by Jimmy Heath. All for free! Kim Thompson will also be part of a discussion of the film The Girls in the Band about female jazz and big band instrumentalists at the New School’s Jazz and Performance space on August 22nd from 6:30-8:30 as part of the Parker Jazz Festival. Details at the City Parks Foundation’s website.

Suga’ guest and host of our special “The Journey”, Bobby Sanabria, will be appearing with Quarteto Ache at Newport Tower in Jersey City, NJ for a lunchtime concert from 12-2 PM on August 21. He’ll also be appearing with Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends Big Band for a free concert as part of the Summerstage series on August 29 at 7 PM.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin will appear one night only at the Blue Note on Monday August 26th.

Roy Ayers finishes the rest of the week at the Blue Note, from August 27 to 31st.

Bassist Charnett Moffett will lead his “Spirit of Sound” ensemble one night only at the Jazz Standard with 7:30 and 9:30 shows on Tuesday August 27th with (fellow Will Calhoun collaborator) pianist Marc Cary.

Looking further ahead, last show’s guest drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts will appear at the Vanguard with his Quartet from September 3rd through the 8th.

Looking much further ahead, organist (and Dr. Lonnie Smith student) Akiko Tsuruga and her Trio will be appearing at the Garage on September 28th.
