On the Bandstand: November 2, 2014 Edition

SOS_book_coverThis week’s show is a second look at the Black Arts Movement with Sonia Sanchez and Drs. John Bracey and James Smethurst and their new book SOS–Calling All Black People: A Black Arts Movement Reader. It’s a fund drive show, and you can support WBAI (and our show) by donating as little as $5 or pledging for our Black Arts Movement audio premium or the book itself. As usual, there are other opportunities to see Suga’ guests in action.

Pianist Harold Mabern will be at Smoke on Monday, November 3rd.

Vocalist René Marie and saxophonist Billy Harper among the acts at Atlantic City’s Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Harper takes the stage with the Cookers on November 7th and Marie performs on the 8th.

Pianist Marc Cary leads his Focus Trio at the Cell Theatre on November 8th and 15th.

Harpist Brandee Younger is at Harlem’s historic, reopened Minton’s on November 9th.

Pianist Randy Weston will be at NYU’s Skirball Center for a performance of the music of James Reece Europe on November 9th and in a panel discussion on the 10th. More details are at NYU’s Institute for African American Affairs.

Speaking of Randy Weston, this week’s the last chance to catch the Visions, Roots, and Rhythms exhibit of visual art inspired by Weston’s musical collaboration with trombonist and composer Melba Liston. It’s at the at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery through November 8th and features work from a number of visual artists, including trombonist (and former Suga’ guest) Dick Griffin.

Trombonist Craig Harris will be at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church in Harlem on November 11th. Call the church for details at 212-283-2928 or check their Facebook page.

Pianist Vijay Iyer will have a pre-concert talk and lead a trio at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts in CT on November 15th.

Looking further ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area with his Unity Group. They’ll be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY on November 19th, Bergen NJ’s Performing Arts Center on the 20th, and The Space in Westbury Long Island on the 21st. Note that Metheny’s shows often sell out early!

On display until November 4th at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery is Visions, Roots, and Rhythms, visual art inspired by the musical collaboration of Randy Weston and Melba Liston. It features work from a number of visual artists, including trombonist (and former Suga’ guest) Dick Griffin.

You have several chances to catch bassist and vocalist Mimi Jones. She’ll be at Small’s with Luis Perdomo’s Quartet on October 22nd, at the Upper West Side’s Bar Thalia on the 24th and 31st with her band, and The Lion in Greenwich Village on the 26th.

You also have several chances to catch drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria at the end of the month. He’ll be at the Hostos Center for the Performing Arts in the South Bronx with Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends Big Band on October 25th. On the 26th, he leads the New School University student Afro Cuban Jazz band in their monthly gig at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café. Finally, on November 1st, you can see him in a free Saturday afternoon show at the Brooklyn Heights public library branch with Gene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble. Note that the 10/24 Jazzmobile 50 Anniversary benefit concert at First Corinthian Baptist Church has been postponed. Get in touch with the Jazzmobile crew for alternate arrangements or keep an eye/ear out for a new date.

Saxophonist Billy Harper will be at The Stone on the Lower East Side on October 26th with Oliver Lake’s Organ Quartet.

Looking ahead, multi-instrumentalist Charles Gayle (who we profiled back in the summer for our Vision Fest show) will have a solo piano performance at Le Poisson Rouge on October 30th.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett returns to Iridium on October 30th, 31st, and November 1st.

Looking further ahead, pianist Harold Mabern will be at the Jazz Standard from October 30th to November 2nd with George Coleman’s New Quintet. You can also catch him uptown at Smoke on Monday, November 3rd.

Poet Jesús Papoleto Meléndez will be one of many poets reading at the Hoboken Museum in New Jersey on November 2nd for “Broken English Lessons” a tribute to the late Pedro Pietri.

Pianist Marc Cary leads his Focus Trio at the Cell Theatre on November 1st.

Finally, keep an eye out for Atlantic City’s Exit Zero Jazz Festival, which has vocalist René Marie and saxophonist Billy Harper among the acts during the November 7th-9th weekend.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria returns to the WBAI studio as this week’s live guest. You can catch him as part of the orchestra in a free performance of Larry Harlow’s Hommy: A Latin Opera at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors series in Damrosch Park on July 23rd. Later this summer, he’ll also be leading a band in a free outdoor performance at Grant’s Tomb on July 30th as part of the Jazzmobile series and at a free performance in Marcus Garvey Park on August 13 as part of the Summerstage series. And there are other opportunities to catch music this week.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on July 16th.

Pianist Marc Cary leads the Focus Trio in a free outdoor concert at Bushnell Park in downtown Hartford CT on July 14th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads an ensemble at Iridium on July 18 and 19.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY on July 19.

Lastly, looking further ahead, Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Village Vanguard from July 22nd to 27th with drummer Rudy Royston’s Sextet.

This week’s show focuses on the late Amiri Baraka, but we still have other listings for you this week.

Percussionist Adam Rudolph conducts the Go Organic Orchestra at Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab on the 14th.

Organist John Medeski will be at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on April 14th and 15th with Phil Lesh.

Pianist Marc Cary will be at Smoke Jazz with Duane Eubanks on the 16th.

Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith will be at the Jazz Standard from the 17th to the 20th with both a trio and his “In the Beginning” Octet on various nights.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen will perform on Friday April 18th at DROM on the Lower East Side.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson and organist Akiko Tsuruga will be at Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 18th as part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s Festival.

Saxophonist Billy Harper appears at Iridium with The Cookers on the 18th and 19th.

Speaking of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, their annual spring festival (link opens a PDF) is going on for the rest of April. It’s all part of Jazz Appreciation Month, culminating in the UN’s International Jazz Day (yes, there is such a thing) on the 30th. Looking ahead, Vocalist Catherine Russell performs George Gershwin’s music at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 23rd and 24th.

On the Bandstand: April 6th, 2014 Edition

This week’s show is on Langston Hughes’s jazz poetry with Hughes biographer Dr. Arnold Rampersad, but there’s other live music to see as the New York metro area finally takes a turn toward spring, so let’s dig in!

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on April 7th and 14th. She’ll also be at the Garage Restaurant with her trio on April 4th and as part of the Gerald Hayes Trio on the 5th. She’ll also be at Showman’s in Harlem on April 11th.

Pianist Marc Cary will be with the Namaskar group at Brooklyn’s Art Café Gureje on the 9th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads a quartet at the legendary (and now re-opened) Minton’s in Harlem on April 9th.

Later on that night at Minton’s, Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet in a late set.

Vocalist Andy Bey will be at the Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center with a Cabaret Jazz show on April 10th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be performing with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble at the Lighthouse in Manhattan on the 12th.

Lastly, reminder that the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s annual spring festival (link opens a PDF) is going on for the rest of April. Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on Monday the 20th.

Also on Monday the 20th, pianist pianist Marc Cary appears with the Namaskar ensemble at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga has a regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. She’ll be there on the 20th and 27th. She also has gigs this week at Londel’s Supper Club on the 24th and Showman’s on the 25th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on January 22nd to promote his new Right on Time release.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads the Watts Family Reunion Band at the Jazz Standard from the 22nd to the 25th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer leads a trio at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 24th and 25th.

Harpist Brandee Younger’s Quartet performs a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Flushing Branch at 1:30 PM on January 25th.

Looking further ahead, saxophonist Kenny Garrett appears at the Celebration of Jazz Saxophones at Rutgers University Newark’s Paul Robeson Campus Center on Tuesday January 28th.

Looking even further ahead, a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka featuring poet Sonia Sanchez and pianist Randy Weston will be held at the Schomburg on Saturday, February 8th. It’s probably a good idea to reserve tickets very early.

We have some sad news to share also: poet, activist, writer, and jazz journalist Amiri Baraka has died. We interviewed him in 2011 and had planned to do a special show with him in 2014 looking back at his life in music. You can hear the show we did in Suga’ in My Bowl’s audio archives (scroll down the page).



Amiri’s wake and funeral will both be held in Newark, NJ. The Wake is Friday, January 17 from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at Metropolitan Baptist Church 149 Springfield Avenue, 07103. 973.642.2267

The Funeral is on Saturday, the 18th 10:00am at Newark Symphony Hall 1020 Broad Street. 973.643.8014.

Both locations are reachable by mass transit from New York City and it goes without saying that you should get there very early to be sure to get inside. Save the date: we received news at press time that there will be a memorial at the Schomburg on February 8th. We’ll provide more concrete details when we receive them.

Bassist Christian McBride leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from the 14th to the 19th.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs appears at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAMCafe for free shows on the 17th and 18th.

Drummer Michael Carvin leads an ensemble at Jazz on the Mountain at the Mohonk Mountain House from the 17th to 19th near Bear Mountain.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on Sunday the 19th.

Writer Amiri Baraka and professors Guthrie Ramsey and Robert G. O’Meally are also on the panel.

The musical Lady Day continues its run at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St starring vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater as Billie Holiday.

On December 4th she’ll be at An Beal Bocht Café on West 238th St in the Bronx (which is a short walk from the #1 train line) with her octet. On Friday the 6th, she’ll be at the Honeycomb Playhouse Speakeasy at 735A St. Nicholas Ave (at 147th St.), and you can catch her Saturday night at Showman’s on West 125th St.


Drummer and bandleader Bobby Sanabria has a free show at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Café on the 6th.

Kenny Garrett Will be at the Iridium from December 6th to the 8th.

Looking further ahead, pianist Harold Mabern appears at the Jazz Standard as part of saxophonist George Coleman’s New Octet from December 11th-15th.

Drummer Will Calhoun plays a free show at the BAM Café on December 13th.

Drummer Michael Carvin will be at the Kitano Jazz Club on December 13th and 14th.

Listen_Whitey_coverTonight’s guest, Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey: the Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975 (and an accompanying CD from Light in the Attic Records), will appear at Revolution Books in Manhattan on Monday at 7 and a free event at Brooklyn College’s Student Union Building on Tuesday at 2 PM.

And there’s music for you to catch this week.

The October 13th show was en encore presentation of our guide to the musical history of Brazil, “The Brazilian Journey“, hosted by Dr. Judith King-Calnek, and produced and engineered by Suga’ in My Bowl host Joyce Jones. The musical Lady Day continues its run at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St starring vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater as Billie Holiday.




You have 3 chances to see Bobby Sanabria, who hosted our Journey special. He’ll be at the Americas Society at 980 Park Avenue with his Multiverse Big Band for the Music of the Americas concert on October 15th. On the 19th, he’ll appear with the Eugene Marlow Heritage Ensemble for the free “We’ve Got Rhythms Concert” at 2:00 p.m. at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Heights Branch at 280 Cadman Plaza West in Downtown Brooklyn. Finally, on the 24th, he’ll appear with the Eugene Marlow Heritage Ensemble at the historic Nuyorican Poets Café.

Bassist Christian McBride will be at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with a big band and a trio from October 21st to the 27th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads a quartet at Harlem’s Ginny’s Supper Club on October 26th.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz will be leading a Quintet at Smoke on November 1st and 2nd.

Vocalist Carol Maillard will be at the at the Tarrytown Music Hall on November 8th as part of the legendary Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Looking ahead, several Suga’ guests will be at Cape May, NJ Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Vocalist Dianne Reeves appears on November 8th. Last month’s guest saxophonist Kenny Garrett and pianist Marc Cary’s Focus Trio take the stage on November 9th.

Dianne Reeves will also be at the Moody Jazz Festival in Newark on November 9th.
