On the Bandstand: May 1 2016 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. This week’s guests are harpist Riza Printup and trumpeter Marcus Printup. Marcus leads a sextet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on May 25th and 26th. As usual, we have lots more music for you this week.
 
We start this week with the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, whose 17th annual jazz festival kicked off on the 15th and runs until May 15th in venues throughout Brooklyn. WBAI Radio is a media sponsor. See the CJBC’s website for the schedule (opens as a PDF).
 
AZA, the exhibit of drummer Will Calhoun’s visual art collaboration is on display at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx until July 21st. See our review of the show for more details. Calhoun will be at the Blue Note on May 30th with McCoy Tyner.
 
Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads her Quintessence ensemble at Zinc Bar on May 5.
 
Organist John Medeski is at The Stone on May 6.
 
Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on May 7th.
 
Vocalist Kurt Elling, bassist Christian McBride, and vocalist Dianne Reeves all lead groups at the Prospect Park Bandshell on May 7-8th as part of the GRAMMY Park festival.
 
Finally, The Red Bull Music Academy has a night of spiritual Jazz featuring Pharoah Sanders, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Kamasi Washington on May 8. The event’s listed as sold out, but details are at the Red Bull Music Academy site and there may be a wait list.
 
Guitarist Julian Lage is at Drom on the Lower East Side on May 11th and the Jazz Standard on May 12th.
 
Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Ginny’s Supper Club on the 14th.
 
Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache at Carnegie Hall on the 14th and will be at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on the 21st for the Made in New York Gala.
 
Saxophonist Oliver Lake is at the 17 White St Loft in Manhattan for a duo performance with bassist Joe Fonda on May 15th.
 
Looking further ahead, Tubist Howard Johnson is at Craig Harris’s Harlem Afternoon Jazz Series at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church for two lunchtime sets on May 17th.
 
The MAC Power Trio of saxophonist David Murray, pianist Geri Allen, drummer Teri Lyne Carrington, and celebrates the release of their CD debut Perfection at Birdland from May 17-21.

We’re (finally!) back on air this week with guest Jessica Edwards, director of the Mavis Staples documentary Mavis! It’s screening at City Cinemas’ Village East in Manhattan until February 25th and will be on HBO later in the year. We have six individual tickets to give away for the screenings this week, graciously donated by Village East Cinema. To get one of those, pledge for a WBAI membership at the $25 level or higher with a credit or debit card or call the pledge line at 212-209-2950. Trombonist Craig Harris is at Harlem’s Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church for a W.E.B. DuBois Jazz Celebration on the 23rd.
 
Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with Joe Chambers on the 23-24th and leads Quarteto Ache at NJPAC in Newark on March 6.
 
Saxophonist Kamasi Washington is at Webster Hall on February 24th.
 
Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem for a listening party and talk on “Jazz From an African Perspective” on the 25th.
 
Bassist Christian McBride is at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Jonathan Batiste on the 26th.
 
Vocalist René Marie is at Ocean County College in Tom’s River NJ on February 26th and The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on the 27th.
 
Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington brings her “Mosaic Project” to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room on the 27th.
 
Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from February 29-March 1 with Gerald Clayton.
 
Also at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club is saxophonist Tia Fuller who leads a quartet including bassist Mimi Jones on March 2nd.
 
Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on March 1 in the last of a series of shows with pianist McCoy Tyner. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch him and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s classic band in action.
 
Guitarist Marc Ribot is at Lincoln Center’s Atrium on March 3 for a free concert with with Los Cubanos Postizos and the same ensemble will be at Le Poisson Rouge on the 4th.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is at Bard College on the 15th.
 
Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on February 15 and March 1 with pianist McCoy Tyner. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch one of these dates and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s band in action.
 
Harpist Brandee Younger is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club for an album release show on February 17.
 
Pianist Randy Weston is at New School Univesity’s Tishman Auditorium on February 18 with Senegalese Master Drummers in a tribute to Doudou N’Diaye Rose.
 
Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at the Jazz Gallery on the 18th with James Carney’s sextet.

This week’s show features Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter! She has no immediate area appearances, but plays NYC metro area venues often, so we’ll keep you posted. And we have more music — including a few free outdoor shows — to get you through the last weeks of summer, so let’s dive in.

Trombonist Craig Harris is quietly curating a serious Tuesday afternoon lunchtime jazz series in Harlem. On the 11th, saxophonist Rene McLean does 2 sets at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church starting at 12 noon.

Legendary drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note August 11-12.

Vibraphonist Roy Ayers appears in a free outdoor concert at Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on the 12th as part of the Summerstage series.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on the 13th at The Gin Fizz in Harlem.

Looking ahead, vocalist Catherine Russell is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 13-16th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Iridium with Network Trio from August 13-16.

Bassist Christian McBride is at the Montclair Jazz Festival in NJ on the 15th.

Drummer Kim Thompson will be at 55 Bar with Mike Stern on the 17, 19, and 24th.

Pianist Geri Allen is at the Village Vanguard from the 18th-23rd.

We wrap up this edition with a preview of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

The festival kicks off with a conversation between Saxophonist Oliver Lake and Rudresh Mahanthappa at the New School in Manhattan on the 20th.

Lake leads his big band in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park on the 21st.

The festival returns to Garvey Park on the 22nd, where drummer Jeff Tain Watts leads a quartet, vocalist/pianist Andy Bey performs, and Hammond B3 Organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith rounds out the day.

The festival wraps up with performances at Tompkins Square Park on the 23rd. Full info is at the Festival’s website.

Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Village Vanguard with Rudy Royston’s Trio from August 4-9.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah is at Harlem’s Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church for a lunchtime concert on August 5.

Saxophonist Steve Kroon is at Newark NJ’s Two Gateway Center (across the street from Newark Penn Station) for a free outdoor lunchtime concert on August 5.

Looking ahead, vocalist Catherine Russell is at Weehawken NJ’s Lincoln Harbor Park on the Waterfront for a free outdoor concert on August 5 and at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from August 13-16.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Harlem’s Ginny’s Supper Club for Abbey Lincoln birthday special shows on August 6.

Finally, legendary drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note August 11-12.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Iridium with Network Trio from August 13-16.

Pianist Vijay Iyer will have a pre-concert talk and lead a trio at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts in CT on November 15th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon will be leading a sextet at Smoke on November 19th.

Looking ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area with his Unity Group. They’ll be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY on November 19th, Bergen NJ’s Performing Arts Center on the 20th, and The Space in Westbury Long Island on the 21st. Note that Metheny’s shows often sell out early!

Vocalist René Marie will be at 54 Below on November 21st -22nd.

Blues singer Alexis P. Suter will be at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on November 22nd.
