Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. The Mavis Staples documentary Mavis! airs on HBO’s streaming sites until April 3rd.

Pianist Vijay Iyer has a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) until March 31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.

Toshi Reagon wraps up the Women’s Jazz Festival at the the NYPL’s Schomburg Center on the 28th. The show is sold out, but we’re giving away a pair of tickets. WBGO Radio host Rhonda Hamilton and vocalist Dianne Reeves will be speaking at Newark (NJ) Symphony Hall in a ceremony celebrating the release of a new postage stamp honoring Sarah Vaughn on the 29th.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria takes part in a celebration of the music of the Dominican Republic at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 28th and Manhattan School of Music’s Borden Auditorium on April 4th.

Arts for Art’s Justice is Compassion series runs from March 26th to April 10th at Clemente Soto Velez Center with performances by bassist William Parker and dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker.

Bassist Mimi Jones leads a quartet in a free concert at Rutgers University Newark’s Paul Robeson Student Center on March 30 and will be at WBGO Radio’s studio in Newark as part of a free screening of the films Seeking Hope and The Girls in the Band on March 31.

Vocalist Dianne Reeves is at Carnegie Hall on March 30.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on March 31, The Turning Point in Piermont NY on April 9, and at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on the 16th.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at at the Jazz Standard from March 29-April 3.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett is at Western Connecticut State University on April 2nd.

Saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders is at Birdland from April 5-9th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Village Vanguard from April 5-10th.

Organist John Medeski is at The Blue Note from April 5-10th with John Scofield.

Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith leads his Evolution ensemble at in a CD release party at Brooklyn Bowl on April 6th.

This week’s guest is Chris Becker, author of Freedom of Expression: Interviews With Women in Jazz. He won’t be in New York for a while, but we’ll let you know when he’s due for a visit and reading. However, we have lots more music for you this week.

Also at the Schomburg Center is film director Carol Bash for a daytime talk and screening of her Mary Lou Williams documentary film The Lady Who Swings the Band on March 23.

Bassist Mimi Jones leads a band at Smoke from March 23-24.

Also at Smoke is saxophonist Billy Harper who finishes off the week with The Cookers from March 25-27.

Our last show was a special fund drive edition. We played excerpts of the “Who Owns Music” panel discussion Suga’ sponsored earlier this year. A pledge for the DVD will get you the full discussion and all proceeds go to WBAI and help us stay on the air. Even a relatively small pledge of $5 helps a lot and sends the message to station management that people want to hear jazz and will support it. This week’s guest is trombonist Craig Harris. You can catch him at Harlem’s Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church on November 3 for two lunchtime sets. Now let’s see what else is going on musically this week.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies on November 4th with a Billie Holiday tribute. The event’s free with RSVP.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at the Village Vanguard from November 3-7 with Electric Masada, John Zorn and others and organist John Medeski takes the stage on the 8th with Simulacrum.

Pianist and NEA Jazz Master Barry Harris and bassist Bob Cranshaw play the music of Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley at Flushing Town Hall on November 6.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake leads his Organ Quartet in a free concert at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark NJ on November 7 as part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at the Jazz Gallery on the 6 and 7 and presents the Veteran’s Dreams Project at the Met Museum of Art on the 12.

The Doc NYC Festival from the 12-17 has several films of interest to jazz fans – and a few definitely to keep an eye on for Suga’ fans. The Sonia Sanchez documentary Baddd Sonia Sanchez, will get screenings, as will The Jazz Loft According to W Eugene Smith, culled from the extensive and eclectic ephemera of the photographer’s years in a Sixth Ave loft building frequented by several jazz luminaries, and Hustler’s Convention featuring members of The Last Poets.

The Wilbur Ware Institute’s annual festival/fundraiser is at the new Cassandra’s Jazz club in Harlem this year and features pianist Harold Mabern and pianist/vocalist Andy Bey on November 14 and presents a lifetime achievement award to bassist Bob Cranshaw on the 15.

Bassist Christian McBride is at NJPAC in Newark NJ on November 12 and returns to play with vocalist Dianne Reeves on the 14. Both events are part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on October 18th. If you missed the last show with saxophonist Kamasi Washington, then head on over to our our audio archives for that and much more — especially since he’s in town this week with stops at Brooklyn’s BRIC JazzFest on October 15th and in Manhattan at Le Poission Rouge on the 16th. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some more upcoming gigs.

Pianist Randy Weston presents the Gnawa master musicians of Morocco at New School’s Tishman Auditorium for a performance on the 13th.

We mentioned the BRIC Arts Jazz Fest at the top of the segment and there are other Suga’ guests to keep an eye out for. Harpist Brandee Younger has a set on the 15th and organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith leads his Evolution ensemble on the 16th.

Saxophonists Kamasi Washington and Lakecia Benjamin hit Le Poisson Rouge on the 16th in a preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest. Benjamin leads the Soulsquad and Washington’s band performs tracks from his acclaimed release The Epic.

The New York Chapter of the AACM’s monthlong 50th anniversary celebration continues at the Community Church of New York on E 35th St with performances on the 16th and every Friday in October.

Organist John Medeski is at Webster Hall with The Word on the 16th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at Minton’s in Harlem on the 17th and Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 23rd.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has a free show at the Brooklyn Heights Library at 2 PM on October 17th.

Bassist Alex Blake and WBAI Producer Dwight Brewster are at the Staten Island Jazz Festival with Dr. Mambo and the Experience Ensemble at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on the 17th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen returns to Earth on the 22nd at Brooklyn Bowl.

Vocalist Thana Alexa is at 55 Bar on the 22nd.

Drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note from October 24-25th.

Director Carol Bash’s documentary film on pianist Mary Lou Williams, The Lady Who Swings the Band, screens at the ReelSisters film festival on October 25th at LIU’s downtown Brooklyn campus.

Saxphonist Ravi Coltrane is at the Rudin Museum on the 25 and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th.

Suga’ in My Bowl is returns to the air this week with a focus on Nina Simone featuring interviews with filmmaker Liz Garbus and others. You can catch Garbus’ What Happened, Miss Simone? at the IFC Center in Manhattan and streaming on Netflix. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has a free outdoor show in the Bronx with Asencion at Middletown Road and Stadium Ave in Pelham Bay Park on July 10th.

Pianist Randy Weston’s African Rhythms Trio with bassist Alex Blake headlines Medgar Evers College’s Jazzy Jazz Festival in a free performance at their Brooklyn campus on July 10. Details are at the Medgar Evers College website.

Drummer Alphonse Mouzon is at the Blue Note with Larry Coryell from July 14-19.

Organist John Medeski is at Brookfield Place in Battery Park City with The Word for a free outdoor concert on July 15.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on July 16 and on most Thursdays at The Gin Fizz in Harlem.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at the Prospect Park Bandshell for the Celebrate Brooklyn series on July 18.

Vocalist Nona Hendryx will be one of many performers at the Schomburg for a Women’s Jazz Festival tribute to her work on March 9th.

Columbia University professor and writer Farah Jasmine Griffin will be at the Schomburg for a discussion on African American writers and artists in the 1950s on March 11th.

Looking ahead, saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a Quartet at Kitano on March 13th.

Legendary Drummer Roy Haynes celebrates his 90th birthday from March 13-15th at the Blue Note with special guests sitting in every night including guitarist Pat Metheny and bassist Christian McBride on the 13th!

Trombonist Steve Turre will be at Smoke from March 13-15th to celebrate the release of his Spiritman CD.

Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new weekly feature, On The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is also a visual artist and will have a showing of his painted sticks at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art in downtown Newark NJ until May 21st.

Bassist Alex Blake leads a Quartet at Zinc Bar on the 24th.

Bassist Reggie Workman and saxophonist Oliver Lake will be at the Village Vanguard on February 24th-28th as part of TRIO 3.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be at St. Peter’s Church for a lunchtime show with Gene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble on February 25th. They’ll also be at Somethin’ Jazz Club on March 4th.

Vocalist and pianist Andy Bey will be at Minton’s in Harlem on February 27-28th.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter will be at The Turning Point in Piermont, NY on February 28th.

Harpist Brandee Younger will be at Minton’s in Harlem on March 1st.

Organist John Medeski will be at Brooklyn Bowl on March 5th.
