On the Bandstand: October 30, 2016 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. We’re supposed to be on air this week, but have been pre-empted for WBAI Radio’s Fall Fund Drive. We’ll see you back on air 2 weeks from now, but until then, head on over to our archives to hear that or any of the other roughly 7 years of shows that are up.

Before we get to the week’s shows, WBAI needs your support to stay on the air and keep us on the air in the station’s Fall Fund Drive. You can call 516-620-3602 or pledge online. Jane Bunnett’s just released Oddara CD with the Afro Cuban Maqueque group is available for a pledge of $35 to WBAI during this fall fund drive. There are also a few autographed copies of Quincy Troupe’s Miles and Me book or Will Calhoun’s Celebrating Elvin Jones CDs available and either would make a unique holiday gift. There are also copies of the MAC Power Trio’s Perfection CD with former Suga’ guests David Murray, Geri Allen, and Terri Lyne Carrington. You can also donate as little as $5. Even a little bit helps a lot and will be greatly appreciated!

Vocalist Catherine Russell and Columbia University Professor Robert O’Meally are at The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on November 1 for “Jazz in the Key of Ellison” as part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.

Saxophonist “Sweet Poppa” Lou Donaldson leads a quartet to celebrate his 90th birthday at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on November 1.

Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and Jeff “Tain” Watts join saxophonist Gary Bartz and many others on November 2 for Jazz for America’s Future: a Hillary Clinton campaign benefit performance at Symphony Space.

Pianist Vijay Iyer at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from November 4-6.

Pianist and keyboardist Marc Cary leads a trio at Smoke on November 7 and 14.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from November 8-13.

Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on November 12 and 26.

Drummer Milford Graves and bassist Christian McBride are at the Village Vanguard with saxophonist John Zorn for an afternoon set on November 13.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at The Blue Note on November 14 with pianist McCoy Tyner and on the 21st with trumpeter Wallace Roney.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem for a talk on the Afro Cuban beat on November 15.

Harpist Brandee Younger is at Newark NJ’s Gateway Center for a lunchtime set on November 16 as part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.

The new documentary film Chasing ‘Trane is screening at the SVA Theater on 23rd St in Manhattan on November 17 as part of the DOC NYC Film Festival. Director John Scheinfeld is scheduled to attend and advance tickets are highly recommended.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun’s gallery exhibit of his visual art collaboration Aza is on view at the Bronx Music Heritage Center through February 11. We reviewed the show earlier this year.

This week’s guests are poet and author Quincy Troupe and Margaret Porter Troupe. You can see both of them along with saxophonist Gary Bartz and percussionist James Mtume at the Harlem Arts Salon on May 26th for a Miles Davis birthday event. Reservations are necessary and can be done at their site.

WBAI’s Spring Fund Drive has begin and we’ve put together a special premium for you. We have 10 autographed copies of Quincy Troupe’s book Miles and Me available for a pledge of $35 to WBAI. The book is his remembrances of knowing and working with Davis on his autobiography and commentary on the music and life from one of the very few people who was close to the man.You can pledge throughout the drive at WBAI’s pledge site.

AZA, the exhibit of drummer Will Calhoun’s visual art collaboration is on display at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx until July 21st. See our review of the show for more details. Calhoun will be at the Blue Note on May 30th with McCoy Tyner.

Drummer JT Lewis is with cellist Marika Hughes on the 16th at the Blue Note.

Bassist Bob Cranshaw is at Cassanrda’s Jazz Club in Harlem on the 16th.

Looking further ahead, Tubist Howard Johnson is at Craig Harris’s Harlem Afternoon Jazz Series at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church for two lunchtime sets on May 17th.

The MAC Power Trio of saxophonist David Murray, pianist Geri Allen, drummer Teri Lyne Carrington, and celebrates the release of their CD debut Perfection at Birdland from May 17-21.

Vocalist Thana Alexa is at 55 Bar on the 18th and the 20th.

Pianist and vocalist Diane Schuur is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater from May 20-21st.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at Borough of Manhattan Community College’s Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the on the 21st for the Made in New York Gala, and leads Quarteto Ache at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on the 27th with Latino poets.

Percussionist Adam Rudolph has a residency at The Stone from May 24-29 and is joined by Graham Haynes on the 25th, 27th, and 28th.

Trumpeter Marcus Printup is Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club with the JALC Orchestra from May 25-26.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin leads the Soulsquad at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on May 31.

This week’s guests are harpist Riza Printup and trumpeter Marcus Printup. Marcus leads a sextet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on May 25th and 26th. As usual, we have lots more music for you this week.

We start this week with the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, whose 17th annual jazz festival kicked off on the 15th and runs until May 15th in venues throughout Brooklyn. WBAI Radio is a media sponsor. See the CJBC’s website for the schedule (opens as a PDF).

AZA, the exhibit of drummer Will Calhoun’s visual art collaboration is on display at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx until July 21st. See our review of the show for more details. Calhoun will be at the Blue Note on May 30th with McCoy Tyner.

Finally, The Red Bull Music Academy has a night of spiritual Jazz featuring Pharoah Sanders, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Kamasi Washington on May 8. The event’s listed as sold out, but details are at the Red Bull Music Academy site and there may be a wait list.

Guitarist Julian Lage is at Drom on the Lower East Side on May 11th and the Jazz Standard on May 12th.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Ginny’s Supper Club on the 14th.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache at Carnegie Hall on the 14th and will be at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College on the 21st for the Made in New York Gala.

We’re (finally!) back on air this week with guest Jessica Edwards, director of the Mavis Staples documentary Mavis! It’s screening at City Cinemas’ Village East in Manhattan until February 25th and will be on HBO later in the year. We have six individual tickets to give away for the screenings this week, graciously donated by Village East Cinema. Saxophonist Kamasi Washington is at Webster Hall on February 24th.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem for a listening party and talk on “Jazz From an African Perspective” on the 25th.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Jonathan Batiste on the 26th.

Vocalist René Marie is at Ocean County College in Tom’s River NJ on February 26th and The Side Door in Old Lyme CT on the 27th.

Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington brings her “Mosaic Project” to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room on the 27th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from February 29-March 1 with Gerald Clayton.

Also at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club is saxophonist Tia Fuller who leads a quartet including bassist Mimi Jones on March 2nd.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on March 1 in the last of a series of shows with pianist McCoy Tyner. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch him and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s classic band in action.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at Lincoln Center’s Atrium on March 3 for a free concert with with Los Cubanos Postizos and the same ensemble will be at Le Poisson Rouge on the 4th.

Suga’ in My Bowl returns to the air this week to bring you an interview with Grammy Award-winning drummer Antonio Sanchez! You can hear him and the Migration band at a release party for their Meridian Suite CD at Subculture on June 19th, which also features vocalist Thana Alexa. As always, we have more music for you this week.

Saxophonist David Murray leads a trio at the Blue Note with pianist Geri Allen and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington on June 15-17 as part of the Blue Note Jazz Fest.

Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Blue Note on June 16 for the Jazz Journalists’ Association’s annual awards celebration, which honors pianist Randy Weston, trombonist Steve Turre, and bassist Christian McBride, among others. The event is open to the public.

Bassist Alex Blake is at Kitano with Lynette Washington and Dennis Ball’s Jazz New York on June 19.

Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning re-imagination of the Ellington classic Money Jungle will be performed at the Schomburg on March 16th as part of their Women’s Jazz Festival. TLC_Money_Jungle Special ticket giveaway: We have six tickets to offer for the Schomburg Women in Jazz Festival’s performance of drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning version of the Ellington classic Money Jungle. We’re offering a maximum of 2 tickets per person to lucky supporters of our blog and show! Fill out the form below and we’ll contact you if you’re one of the lucky ones. First come, first serve and the form will close on Monday morning or when the tickets are all gone. This week’s show features an interview with WBGO radio host Sheila Anderson! You can see her live at the 92nd St. Y’s Latin on Lex event on the 12th and and hear her from 1-6 AM most Saturday and Sunday mornings on WBGO FM. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is also a visual artist and will have a showing of his painted sticks at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art in downtown Newark NJ until May 21st.

Vocalist Nona Hendryx will be one of many performers at the Schomburg for a Women’s Jazz Festival tribute to her work on March 9th.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at The Stone on March 10th.

Columbia University professor and writer Farah Jasmine Griffin will be at the Schomburg for a discussion on African American writers and artists in the 1950s on the 11th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be leading Quarteto Aché at Floridita on 125th St in Harlem on the 13th and at Seton Hall University in New Jersey on the 18th.

Legendary Drummer Roy Haynes celebrates his 90th birthday from the 13-15th at the Blue Note with special guests sitting in every night including guitarist Pat Metheny and bassist Christian McBride on the 13th!

Trombonist Steve Turre will be at Smoke from March 13-15th to celebrate the release of his Spiritman CD.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz will lead a Quartet at Kitano on March 14th.

Looking ahead, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning re-imagination of the Ellington classic Money Jungle will be performed at the Schomburg on March 16th as part of their Women’s Jazz Festival.

Finally, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Birdland with bassist Charnett Moffett’s Network Trio from the 17-21st.

Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new weekly feature, On The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests.

Program note: Suga’ in My Bowl has changed to a biweekly schedule on WBAI Radio and now alternates Sunday nights with Sports Qualified at our usual 11 PM -1 AM time period.
