On the Bandstand: November 2, 2014 Edition

Program note: Suga’ in My Bowl has changed to a biweekly schedule on WBAI Radio and will now alternate Sunday nights with Sports Qualified at our usual 11-1 AM time period. You’ll get the same great show; just every other week! So mark your calendars or just keep up with us via our Facebook page, the blog here, or our main website and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

SOS_book_coverThis week’s show is a second look at the Black Arts Movement with Sonia Sanchez and Drs. John Bracey and James Smethurst and their new book SOS–Calling All Black People: A Black Arts Movement Reader. It’s a fund drive show, and you can support WBAI (and our show) by donating as little as $5 or pledging for our Black Arts Movement audio premium or the book itself. As usual, there are other opportunities to see Suga’ guests in action.

Pianist Harold Mabern will be at Smoke on Monday, November 3rd.

Vocalist René Marie and saxophonist Billy Harper among the acts at Atlantic City’s Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Harper takes the stage with the Cookers on November 7th and Marie performs on the 8th.

Pianist Marc Cary leads his Focus Trio at the Cell Theatre on November 8th and 15th.

Harpist Brandee Younger is at Harlem’s historic, reopened Minton’s on November 9th.

Pianist Randy Weston will be at NYU’s Skirball Center for a performance of the music of James Reece Europe on November 9th and in a panel discussion on the 10th. More details are at NYU’s Institute for African American Affairs.

Speaking of Randy Weston, this week’s the last chance to catch the Visions, Roots, and Rhythms exhibit of visual art inspired by Weston’s musical collaboration with trombonist and composer Melba Liston. It’s at the at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery through November 8th and features work from a number of visual artists, including trombonist (and former Suga’ guest) Dick Griffin.

Trombonist Craig Harris will be at Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church in Harlem on November 11th. Call the church for details at 212-283-2928 or check their Facebook page.

Pianist Vijay Iyer will have a pre-concert talk and lead a trio at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts in CT on November 15th.

Looking further ahead, guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area with his Unity Group. They’ll be at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester NY on November 19th, Bergen NJ’s Performing Arts Center on the 20th, and The Space in Westbury Long Island on the 21st. Note that Metheny’s shows often sell out early!

On the Bandstand: July 20, 2014 Edition

This week’s show is a memorial tribute to the late bassist Charlie Haden. But we have an expanded set of live music listings for you this week.
There are several opportunities to catch bassist Mimi Jones. She’ll be leading a band at The Lion on the 20th and at the Village Vanguard from July 22nd to 27th with drummer Rudy Royston’s Sextet.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be appearing as part of the orchestra in a free performance of Larry Harlow’s Hommy: A Latin Opera at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors series in Damrosch Park on July 23rd. He’ll also be leading a band in a free outdoor performance at Grant’s Tomb on July 30th as part of the Jazzmobile series.

Journalist Herb Boyd of the Amsterdam News and pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs will be part of a discussion titled “Post 50′s Jazz, the Artists, the Culture, the Cool” on modern jazz’s development and roots in Harlem on July 24th at the Abyssinian Baptist Church.

Trombonist Steve Turre appears at the Jazz Standard from July 24th to 27th with saxophonist Donald Harrison’s Quintet. Go to jazzstandard dot com for details. He’s also playing an afternoon set at the Caramoor Jazz Festival in Westchester County on the 27th.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on the 25 and has a free outdoor concert in Cold Spring NY on the 27th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th and 30th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer drops by The Stone for a late set on August 1st.

Guitarist Pat Metheny appears at Caramoor in Westchester County with his Unity Group on August 2nd.

Looking ahead, pianist Geri Allen has a solo performance at the Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center in West Orange NJ on August 2nd.

On the Bandstand: May 11, 2014 Edition

This week’s show is a special spring fund drive broadcast, but there are plenty of live music listings.

On May 13th, Pianist Vijay Iyer will appear at The Stone.

On May 14th, drummer Bobby Sanabria appears at Zinc Bar in Manhattan with Eugene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble. On the 17th, he leads the Multiverse Big Band in a show at Orchard Beach in The Bronx

Organist John Medeski will be at Stage 48 in Manhattan with the M&M’s including Thurston Moore on May 15th.

Vocalist René Marie leads a group at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 15th to the 18th.

Poets Sonia Sanchez and Jessica Care Moore join many other performers in a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Café on May 17th and the show is free.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at the Players Club on May 18th as special guest with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks.

Trombonist Craig Harris leads the Harlem Night Songs Big Band in a set of Sun Ra’s music on May 18th at Harlem’s Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church. Details are on Harris’s website.

Looking further ahead, Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on May 21st.

On the Bandstand: May 4, 2014 Edition

This week’s guests are past and present members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Currently under the direction of Marshall Allen, they’re on a tour celebrating the 100th anniversary of Ra’s arrival on Planet Earth. You can see one guest, Ahmed Abdullah, whose Diaspora ensemble will be playing Sun Ra’s music at 2 Brooklyn gigs this week. Catch them at Sista’s Place on Saturday May 10th or the Shapeshifter lab on Sunday the 11th.

Columbia University Professor and writer Dr. Farah Jasmine Griffin will be part of a conversation about Charlie Parker’s life and legacy at Minton’s on Monday May 5th.

And Wednesday the 7th is unusually busy this week.

On Wednesday, Drummer Kim Thompson appears at Showman’s Jazz Club.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts appears at Minton’s with the “3SUM” group.

And, finally, pianist Vijay Iyer has is at The Stone. He also has a free performance—that’s right, free—at the City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall on Friday May 9th. You need to reserve tickets in advance for Friday, which you can do at the Harlem Stage website.

Also on Friday the 9th, drummer Bobby Sanabria leads his Multiverse Big Band in a daytime show at the Apollo Theater and Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin and Drummer Michael Carvin have a late show at the Apollo Café.

Many of these events are part of the Harlem Jazz Shrines festival.

They’re in Fairfield CT at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Arts on the 25th and in New York at the Town Hall Theater on the 28th. For those of you outside the listening area, Metheny’s website also has links for their entire tour, which will cover much of the US and Europe. Metheny fans should get tickets right away, as the shows sell out fast.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga continues her regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. See her there on March 10th and 17th.

There’s a free midday event on the legacy of pianist Mary Lou Williams sponsored by Columbia University’s Jazz Studies Institute on the 12th. Pianists Vijay Iyer and Geri Allen join professor Farah Jasmine Griffin to talk about her life and music. It’s from 11 AM to 1 PM in Buell Hall’s East Gallery on Columbia’s campus.

Also on Monday the 20th, pianist pianist Marc Cary appears with the Namaskar ensemble at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

Organist Akiko Tsuruga has a regular Monday night gig at Manhattan’s Kotobuki Restaurant. She’ll be there on the 20th and 27th. She also has gigs this week at Londel’s Supper Club on the 24th and Showman’s on the 25th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on January 22nd to promote his new Right on Time release.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads the Watts Family Reunion Band at the Jazz Standard from the 22nd to the 25th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer leads a trio at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room on the 24th and 25th.

Harpist Brandee Younger’s Quartet performs a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Flushing Branch at 1:30 PM on January 25th.

Looking further ahead, saxophonist Kenny Garrett appears at the Celebration of Jazz Saxophones at Rutgers University Newark’s Paul Robeson Campus Center on Tuesday January 28th.

Looking even further ahead, a tribute to the late Amiri Baraka featuring poet Sonia Sanchez and pianist Randy Weston will be held at the Schomburg on Saturday, February 8th. It’s probably a good idea to reserve tickets very early.

Tonight’s guest, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, is currently touring Europe to support his new Pushing the World Away release, but look for him on November 9th at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival in Cape May, NJ.

Dee Dee Bridgewater stars in the musical Lady Day, based on the life of Billie Holiday. Now in previews, with the regular run starting in October at the Little Schubert Theater at 422 W. 42nd St.

Bud_Powell_coverU Penn professor (and host of our “Blues Journey” special) Dr. Guthrie Ramsey reads from his new book, The Amazing Bud Powell: Black Genius, Jazz History, and the Challenge of Bebop, 7 PM September 27th in Room 754 of Columbia University’s Schermerhorn Extension: 120th St. and Amsterdam Ave. Event details at Columbia’s Institute for Research in African American Studies website.

Pianist Geri Allen performs a series of concerts featuring the Afro Blue Vocal Ensemble of Duke Ellington’s “Three Black Kings” in honor of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and the State Theater in New Brunswick from September 27th to 29th. Details are at the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra website.

Geri Allen also appears with the Marcus Belgrave Quartet at the Jazz Standard on October 1.

Organist John Medeski has 3 upcoming area shows with John Zorn. They’ll be at Columbia University’s Miller Theater on September 27th and have 7:30 and 10:30 PM shows at Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge club on Bleecker St on the 29th.

Vocalist Dianne Reeves will be at the Tarrytown Music Hall on September 28th.

Organist (and Dr. Lonnie Smith student) Akiko Tsuruga and her Trio will be appearing at the Garage on September 28th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer has 3 upcoming appearances at the Alexander Kasser Theater at Montclair State University in New Jersey. There’s a free talk on October 2nd and performances of his “Open City” large ensemble on the 4th and 5th.

Last show’s guest, pianist Michele Rosewoman, will be performing with her New Yor-Uba ensemble at Dizzy’s Club on Monday September 30th and Tuesday October 1st.

Bassist Reggie Workman will be at the Jazz Standard as part of an ensemble celebrating Art Blakey’s legacy on October 3rd through 6th.

Finally, Dizzy’s Club presents the Sun Ra Arkestra led by Marshall Allen in “Sun Ra Turns 100” on October 5th.
