We’re off the air this week, but stop by our archives to get your fix from nearly 7 years of archived shows until next week. Also see our review of Will Calhoun’s art exhibit on display in the South Bronx. As usual, we have lots more music for you this week.

We start this week with the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, whose 17th annual jazz festival kicked off on the 15th and runs until May 15th in venues throughout Brooklyn. WBAI Radio is a media sponsor. You can get full information and a schedule from the CBJC by calling 718-773-2252 ext 103.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller is at The Blue Note on the 25th with the Berklee Rainbow All Stars.

AZA, the exhibit of drummer Will Calhoun’s visual art collaboration is on display at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx until July 21st. Calhoun will be at the Blue Note on ~~the 26th~~ May 30th with McCoy Tyner.

Pianist Randy Weston has a busy week. He leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake in the Dweck Center of the Brooklyn Public Library’s main branch on the 26th and in a free performance at New School University’s Tishman Auditorium on the 28th to close out his yearlong residency. Finally, Weston returns to the Dweck Center on the 30th for a talk on the African roots of jazz. The Brooklyn library events are part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Looking further ahead, Saxophonist Oliver Lake and bassist Reggie Workman are at Village Vanguard with TRIO3 from April 26-May 1.

Pianist Barry Harris leads a trio in a lunchtime set at St. Peter’s Church on April 27th.

Drummer Billy Cobham is at The Blue Note from April 27-May 1 with Donald Harrison.

Drummer Kim Thompson leads a quartet at Zinc Bar on the 29th.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads his DIASPORA band at Sistas’ Place on April 30. This event is part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Pianist Geri Allen is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on April 30 with Joe Lovano.

Saxophonist and EVI master Marshall Allen makes a rare non-Arkestra Earthly appearance with two sets at The Stone on April 30.

Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at The Stone on May 1 for the early set and at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on May 7th.

Vocalist Kurt Elling, bassist Christian McBride, and vocalist Dianne Reeves all lead groups at the Prospect Park Bandshell on May 7 as part of the GRAMMY Park festival.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads her Quintessence ensemble at Zinc Bar on May 5.

Organist John Medeski is at The Stone on May 6.

Finally, The Red Bull Music Academy has a night of spiritual Jazz featuring Pharoah Sanders, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Kamasi Washington on May 8. The event’s listed as sold out, but details are at the Red Bull Music Academy site and there may be a wait list.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. Our last show was a special fund drive edition. We played excerpts of the “Who Owns Music” panel discussion Suga’ sponsored earlier this year. A pledge for the DVD will get you the full discussion and all proceeds go to WBAI and help us stay on the air. Even a relatively small pledge of $5 helps a lot and sends the message to station management that people want to hear jazz and will support it. This week’s guest is trombonist Craig Harris. You can catch him at Harlem’s Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church on November 3 for two lunchtime sets. Now let’s see what else is going on musically this week.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies on November 4th with a Billie Holiday tribute. The event’s free with RSVP.

Guitarist Marc Ribot is at the Village Vanguard from November 3-7 with Electric Masada, John Zorn and others and organist John Medeski takes the stage on the 8th with Simulacrum.

Pianist and NEA Jazz Master Barry Harris and bassist Bob Cranshaw play the music of Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley at Flushing Town Hall on November 6.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake leads his Organ Quartet in a free concert at Bethany Baptist Church in Newark NJ on November 7 as part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at the Jazz Gallery on the 6 and 7 and presents the Veteran’s Dreams Project at the Met Museum of Art on the 12.

The Doc NYC Festival from the 12-17 has several films of interest to jazz fans – and a few definitely to keep an eye on for Suga’ fans. The Sonia Sanchez documentary Baddd Sonia Sanchez, will get screenings, as will The Jazz Loft According to W Eugene Smith, culled from the extensive and eclectic ephemera of the photographer’s years in a Sixth Ave loft building frequented by several jazz luminaries, and Hustler’s Convention featuring members of The Last Poets.

The Wilbur Ware Institute’s annual festival/fundraiser is at the new Cassandra’s Jazz club in Harlem this year and features pianist Harold Mabern and pianist/vocalist Andy Bey on November 14 and presents a lifetime achievement award to bassist Bob Cranshaw on the 15.

Bassist Christian McBride is at NJPAC in Newark NJ on November 12 and returns to play with vocalist Dianne Reeves on the 14. Both events are part of the James Moody Jazz Festival.

The New York Chapter of the AACM’s monthlong 50th anniversary celebration at the Community Church of New York on E 35th St wraps up on the 30 with the AACM All Stars featuring Dr. Muhal Richard Abrams on piano.

Poet jessica Care moore has an album release party at the Blue Note on October 30th.

Trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre is at Iridium with a Rahsaan Roland Kirk tribute from October 30 – November 1.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is busy right now. He kicks off a year-long residency at the Met Museum on the 30th, is at the Jazz Gallery on the 6 and 7 and presents the Veteran’s Dreams Project at the Met Museum of Art on the 12.

Finally, vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Apollo Theater on the 31st.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on July 12. Until then, the big news this week is the kickoff of this year’s Vision Festival. If you missed last week’s show, now’s a good time to hit our our audio archives, since it was a preview of this year’s Vision. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

We wrap up this week with your 20th Vision Festival round-up. Sunday July 5 features films at Anthology Film Archives and there’s a conference on Monday July 6 at Columbia University’s Buell Hall at 116 and Broadway. Performances run from Tuesday July 7 to Sunday July 12 at the historic Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Sq South. And you can hear Douglas R. Ewart, William Parker, Patricia Nicholson Parker, The Sun Ra Arkestra with Marshall Allen, Craig Harris, David Murray, Charles Gayle, Joe Daley, and many more. We’ll have a full preview in a separate post and ongoing coverage here. WBAI radio is proud to be a media sponsor of the festival this year.

Pianist Barry Harris kicks off Jazzmobile’s season with a free outdoor concert at Grant’s Tomb on July 8.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor shows in the Bronx. Catch him at Co-Op City with Antionette Montague on July 8 and with Asencion at Middletown Road and Stadium Ave in Pelham Bay Park on the 10th.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the Jazz Standard with vocalist Charenee Wade on July 8.

Percussionist Steve Kroon’s Latin Jazz Sextet is at Smoke on July 9.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on July 9 and on most Thursdays at The Gin Fizz in Harlem.

Pianist Randy Weston’s African Rhythms Trio with bassist Alex Blake headlines Medgar Evers College’s Jazzy Jazz Festival in a free performance at their Brooklyn campus on July 10. Details are at the Medgar Evers College website.

Suga’ in My Bowl returns to the air this week with a preview of this year’s Vision Festival. It kicks off on July 5, with a week’s worth of film and live perfromances. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at Birdland from June 30-July 4.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the Newark Museum on July 2 for a free outdoor lunchtime concert as part of their Jazz in the Garden series.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on July 2 and 9 at The Gin Fizz in Harlem.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun will be in an outdoor concert at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park on July 4, as Living Colour headlines the International African Arts Festival. There’s a small donation for entrance to the festival.

Pianist Barry Harris kicks off Jazzmobile’s season with a free outdoor concert at Grant’s Tomb on July 8.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the Jazz Standard with vocalist Charenee Wade on July 8.

Looking much further ahead, one of last week’s guests, vocalist Nona Hendryx, is appearing at Harlem Stage on April 30 and May 1 in “Parallel Lives: Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf.”

Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new weekly feature, On The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests.

Program note: Suga’ in My Bowl has changed to a biweekly schedule on WBAI Radio and will now alternate Sunday nights with Sports Qualified at our usual 11-1 AM time period. You’ll get the same great show; just every other week! So mark your calendars or just keep up with us via our Facebook page, the blog here, or our main website and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

Due to our new schedule, we were off the WBAI airwaves this week, but will be back on the 19th. Until then, you might take a look at our archives, which now have four years worth of shows, including our show with Pharaoh Sanders, who had a birthday on Monday. Meanwhile, there are other opportunities to see Suga’ guests in action.

Bassist Christian McBride will be in Brooklyn with Alicia Olatuja at the BRIC House Ballroom on October 16th.

Drummer Michael Carvin has a free concert at the Newark Museum as part of WBGO Radio’s Kids’ Jazz series on October 18th. Note that while admission is free, you need to have a child with you.

Pianist Randy Weston leads his African Rhythms Quintet with bassist Alex Blake at the Manhattan School of Music on October 17th.

On display until November 4th at the Wilmer Jennings Gallery is Visions, Roots, and Rhythms, visual art inspired by the musical collaboration of Randy Weston and Melba Liston. It features work from a number of visual artists, including trombonist (and former Suga’ guest) Dick Griffin.

Lastly, legendary pianist Barry Harris will be at the Flushing Town Hall theater in Queens on October 17th.

Bassist Mimi Jones will be appearing at the Upper West Side’s Bar Thalia on October 10th with her band. She’ll also be at The Lion in Greenwich Village on the 19th.

Looking ahead, drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria will be at Jazzmobile’s 50 Anniversary benefit concert on October 24th at Harlem’s First Corinthian Baptist Church and on October 25th at the Hostos Center for the Performing Arts in the South Bronx with Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends Big Band.
