Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. This week’s guest on the radio is vocalist Carmen Lundy! She has no immediate area shows, but as usual, we’ll keep you in the loop for when she comes to town. Meanwhile, we have some upcoming gigs — and another chance to get some free tickets if you act fast.

We start with another ticket giveaway for the Schomburg Library’s Women’s Jazz Festival on March 23rd! We have four tickets to the Great Women of Blues and Jazz show curated by Toshi Reagon and featuring bassist Mimi Jones for our fans and supporters!! Vocalist Thana Alexa will be at Subculture on March 23rd.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts hosts a listening session of some of his favorite music at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on March 25th.

Guitarist Marc Ribot will be at Greenwich House in Manhattan’s Uncharted Series on the 26th.

Pianist Geri Allen, bassist Mimi Jones, and saxophonist Tia Fuller are all part of the line-up in a free concert at Rutgers University’s Newark NJ campus on the 26th.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads her New Yor-Uba ensemble at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 27-29th.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs is at Kitano on March 28th.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson will be at William Patterson University’s Shea Center for the Performing Arts in Patterson, New Jersey on March 29th.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin leads her Soulsquad at the Schomburg on March 30th with vocalist Catherine Russell to wrap up their Women’s Jazz Festival. We’ll have another ticket giveaway next weekend for this show! Check back for details.

Randy Weston will lead his African Rhythms Sextet with bassist Alex Blake at the Jazz Standard from April 2nd-5th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet with bassist Mimi Jones at Smoke from April 3rd-5th.

Low brass specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on April 4th and 18th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be at Zinc Bar on April 8th.

Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning re-imagination of the Ellington classic Money Jungle will be performed at the Schomburg on March 16th as part of their Women’s Jazz Festival. The Arts for Art organization’s (promoters of the annual Vision Fest) artist response to the Black Lives Matter movement continues through the 30th at Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side. Dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker and trombonist Dick Griffin (who will be showing his visual art) will be among the many artists and performers there.

Pianist Marc Cary‘s 5-week residency at the Cell Theatre continues on January 31st, running on Saturday evenings through February.

Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet and saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin leads her Soulsquad at the Met Museum of Art’s “Jazz and Colors” event on January 30th. If you miss that show, you can catch Younger at a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Central Branch on February 1st.

Looking ahead, you have a rare opportunity to catch multi-instrumentalist Charles Gayle on saxophone, bass, and piano with guitarist Marc Ribot at The Stone on January 28th.

Also on the 28th, keyboardist John Medeski is at the Village Vanguard.

Looking further ahead, saxophonist Pharoah Sanders will be at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from January 29th to February 1st.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake will be at Roulette in Brooklyn on January 30th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen has a free show at the Sugarcube pop-up performance space at South St. Seaport on January 31st. Admission is free but you can reserve a spot at their website.

Finally, looking even further ahead, Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter will be at Treme in Islip, LI on January 31st.

This week’s show features an interview with pianist Geri Allen done by special guest co-host Columbia University’s Dr. Farah Jasmine Griffin. See her this week at the memorial for bassist Charlie Haden (details below). This (nearly) wraps up our coverage on the 2015 Winter Jazz Fest. There will be a memorial for the late saxophonist Will Connell on the 12th at The Jazz Church, St. Peter’s. Saxophonist Oliver Lake, multi-instrumentalist Charles Gayle, and trombonist Craig Harris will be just a few of the many artists performing appearing at the memorial. You are all cordially invited ….

The big news is a memorial and celebration of the life of the late bassist Charlie Haden; at the Town Hall on January 13th with Ruth Cameron-Haden, Pat Metheny, Brandee Younger, low bass specialist Joe Daley, pianist Geri Allen, and many more. Admission is free, but organizers will take donations for the Haden CalArts Scholarship fund to help music students. They also recommend arriving early, since space is limited and it will start and end on time.

It’s the very last call for reservations to see vocalist Catherine Russell and master drummer Michael Carvin at Mohonk Mountain House’s Jazz on the Mountain from January 16-19th.

Pianist Marc Cary returns to the Cell Theatre with his Focus trio on January 17th.

Dr. Leonard Jeffries will have a birthday celebration on the 18th at Harlem’s National Black Theater from 4-9 PM. Admission’s free, but be prepared to make a donation. Call 201-837-1355 for details and or see the event’s poster (opens as a photo) on Facebook.

Bassist Reggie Workman will be at the Jazz Standard with saxophonist Azar Lawrence’s Quartet for celebration of Coltrane’s A Love Supreme on December 9th to 10th.

UPenn professor Dr. Guthrie Ramsey will be at HarlemStage on the City College of NY campus on December 11th for a free roundtable discussion on the current state of Black music.

Pianist and vocalist Andy Bey will be at Minton’s in Harlem on the 12th and 13th.

Drummer Michael Carvin will be at Kitano on December 12th to 13th with a release party for his new Flash Forward CD.

Vocalist Carol Maillard and the legendary Sweet Honey in the Rock return to the area for their annual holiday concerts. You can catch them at Brooklyn College’s Performing Arts Center on December 13th and at NJPAC in Newark on the 20th.

Pianist Randy Weston will be the master of ceremonies for a tribute to saxophonist Rene McLean at the Schomburg Center on December 16th. Details are on the Sista’s Place website.

Suga in My Bowl is off the WBAI airwaves this week for the last Sunday of the month, but set your alarm for next week, when Last Poet Abiodun Oyewole joins us on September 7th! And we have other live music listings for you this week.

Bassist Bob Cranshaw is at Smoke with George Coleman’s Quartet on September 5th and 6th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has a free outdoor concert on September 7th with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY. It’s a short walk from the Metro North Railroad station.

Drummer Billy Cobham appears at the Blue Note to celebrate 40 years of his landmark Spectrum album from September 2nd to 7th.

You can catch harpist Brandee Younger at the historic reopened Minton’s in Harlem on September 7th.

Drummer Michael Carvin has a release party for his new Flash Forward CD at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s club on August 25th.

You have two chances to catch Blues singer Alexis P. Suter and her band. They’ll be at BB King’s on August 25th and have a free outdoor concert in Ridgefield CT’s Ballard Park on the 28th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at City Winery in a tribute to Billy Preston on August 26th.

Vocalist Diane Schuur will be at Ocean City NJ at the Ocean City Pier on August 27th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor concerts on the horizon. He appears at Marcus Garvey Park for a tribute to drummer Max Roach on August 29th as part of the Jazzmobile series. On September 7th, you can see with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY.

Trombonist Steve Turre is at the Stone on August 30th as part of a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Blue Note from August 29th to 31st.
