Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. This week’s guest on the radio is vocalist Carmen Lundy! She has no immediate area shows, but as usual, we’ll keep you in the loop for when she comes to town. Meanwhile, we have some upcoming gigs — and another chance to get some free tickets if you act fast.

We start with another ticket giveaway for the Schomburg Library’s Women’s Jazz Festival on March 23rd! We have four tickets to the Great Women of Blues and Jazz show curated by Toshi Reagon and featuring bassist Mimi Jones for our fans and supporters!! Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts hosts a listening session of some of his favorite music at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on March 25th.

Guitarist Marc Ribot will be at Greenwich House in Manhattan’s Uncharted Series on the 26th.

Pianist Geri Allen, bassist Mimi Jones, and saxophonist Tia Fuller are all part of the line-up in a free concert at Rutgers University’s Newark NJ campus on the 26th.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads her New Yor-Uba ensemble at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from the 27-29th.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs is at Kitano on March 28th.

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson will be at William Patterson University’s Shea Center for the Performing Arts in Patterson, New Jersey on March 29th.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin leads her Soulsquad at the Schomburg on March 30th with vocalist Catherine Russell to wrap up their Women’s Jazz Festival. We’ll have another ticket giveaway next weekend for this show! Check back for details.

Randy Weston will lead his African Rhythms Sextet with bassist Alex Blake at the Jazz Standard from April 2nd-5th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet with bassist Mimi Jones at Smoke from April 3rd-5th.

Low brass specialist on tuba and trombone Joe Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on April 4th and 18th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be at Zinc Bar on April 8th.

Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy Award-winning re-imagination of the Ellington classic Money Jungle will be performed at the Schomburg on March 16th as part of their Women’s Jazz Festival. Vocalist Nona Hendryx will be one of many performers at the Schomburg for a Women’s Jazz Festival tribute to her work on March 9th.

Columbia University professor and writer Farah Jasmine Griffin will be at the Schomburg for a discussion on African American writers and artists in the 1950s on the 11th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be leading Quarteto Aché at Floridita on 125th St in Harlem on the 13th and at Seton Hall University in New Jersey on the 18th.

Legendary Drummer Roy Haynes celebrates his 90th birthday from the 13-15th at the Blue Note with special guests sitting in every night including guitarist Pat Metheny and bassist Christian McBride on the 13th!

Trombonist Steve Turre will be at Smoke from March 13-15th to celebrate the release of his Spiritman CD.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz will lead a Quartet at Kitano on March 14th.

The Arts for Art organization’s (promoters of the annual Vision Fest) artist response to the Black Lives Matter movement continues through the 30th at Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side. Dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker and trombonist Dick Griffin (who will be showing his visual art) will be among the many artists and performers there.

Pianist Marc Cary‘s 5-week residency at the Cell Theatre continues on January 31st, running on Saturday evenings through February.

Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet and saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin leads her Soulsquad at the Met Museum of Art’s “Jazz and Colors” event on January 30th. If you miss that show, you can catch Younger at a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Central Branch on February 1st.

Looking ahead, you have a rare opportunity to catch multi-instrumentalist Charles Gayle on saxophone, bass, and piano with guitarist Marc Ribot at The Stone on January 28th.

On the Bandstand: September 21, 2014 Edition

This week’s show is a memorial for the late Joe Sample, but there are other opportunities to see Suga’ guests in action.

Saxophonist Billy Harper will be appearing at The Blue Note on September 23rd and 24th with the Cookers.

Also at The Blue Note is Saxophonist Lou Donaldson, who leads a quartet for one night only on September 25th.

Bassist Christian McBride will be out on Long Island at the Sag Harbor Music Festival on September 26th.

You have two chances to see drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria this week. He’ll be at Kitano with singer Antoinette Montague on the 26th and his monthly gigs leading the New School University student Afro Cuban Jazz band at the Nuyorican Poets’ Café starts on the 28th. Look for them last Sunday of the month for the rest of the school year.

Finally, September 27th looks to be a big day, music-wise.

You can catch organist John Medeski at the Town Hall Theater in “Strange and Beautiful: A Celebration of the Music of John Lurie, The Lounge Lizards, and Marvin Pontiac”, which has several other guest performers as well. Info is at thetownhall dot org.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts will be at Le Poisson Rouge with the Paul Bollenbeck Trio.

You can see drummer JT Lewis in action at the Harlemstage Gatehouse on the City College of New York campus with the Harriet Tubman band and singer Cassandra Wilson in a tribute to Henry Threadgill.

Vocalist and vibraphonist Roy Ayers will be at the First Annual Spirit and Harmony Festival at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens on September 13th.

Suga in My Bowl is off the WBAI airwaves this week for the last Sunday of the month, but set your alarm for next week, when Last Poet Abiodun Oyewole joins us on September 7th! And we have other live music listings for you this week.

Bassist Bob Cranshaw is at Smoke with George Coleman’s Quartet on September 5th and 6th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has a free outdoor concert on September 7th with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY. It’s a short walk from the Metro North Railroad station.

Drummer Billy Cobham appears at the Blue Note to celebrate 40 years of his landmark Spectrum album from September 2nd to 7th.

You can catch harpist Brandee Younger at the historic reopened Minton’s in Harlem on September 7th.
