On the Bandstand: July 5, 2015 Edition

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Keep up with us via Facebook, the blog here, or our main website, or Twitter and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on July 12. Until then, the big news this week is the kickoff of this year’s Vision Festival. If you missed last week’s show, now’s a good time to hit our our audio archives, since it was a preview of this year’s Vision. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

We wrap up this week with your 20th Vision Festival round-up. Sunday July 5 features films at Anthology Film Archives and there’s a conference on Monday July 6 at Columbia University’s Buell Hall at 116 and Broadway. Performances run from Tuesday July 7 to Sunday July 12 at the historic Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Sq South. And you can hear Douglas R. Ewart, William Parker, Patricia Nicholson Parker, The Sun Ra Arkestra with Marshall Allen, Craig Harris, David Murray, Charles Gayle, Joe Daley, and many more. We’ll have a full preview in a separate post and ongoing coverage here. WBAI radio is proud to be a media sponsor of the festival this year.

Pianist Barry Harris kicks off Jazzmobile’s season with a free outdoor concert at Grant’s Tomb on July 8.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor shows in the Bronx. Catch him at Co-Op City with Antionette Montague on July 8 and with Asencion at Middletown Road and Stadium Ave in Pelham Bay Park on the 10th.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the Jazz Standard with vocalist Charenee Wade on July 8.

Percussionist Steve Kroon’s Latin Jazz Sextet is at Smoke on July 9.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on July 9 and on most Thursdays at The Gin Fizz in Harlem.

Pianist Randy Weston’s African Rhythms Trio with bassist Alex Blake headlines Medgar Evers College’s Jazzy Jazz Festival in a free performance at their Brooklyn campus on July 10. Details are at the Medgar Evers College website.

Drummer Alphonse Mouzon is at the Blue Note with Larry Coryell from July 14-19.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at The Turning Point in Piermont NY on July 18 and has a free show in Wagner Park on the 30.

We start with our own event this week: On February 18th “Who Owns Music?” lands at Harlem’s Raw Space for an exciting discussion between bassist William Parker, writer/poet Quincy Troupe, WBGO Radio’s Sheila Anderson, Grammy nominated vocalist René Marie, Ahmed Abdullah, Music director of Sista’s Place and hosted by Suga’ in My Bowl’s Joyce Jones and Hank Williams. It’s a fundraiser for WBAI Radio. Admission is $15 at the door. More details at our site.

Carl Hancock Rux’s play “Stranger on Earth” based on writer James Baldwin’s words has shows at HarlemStage on the City College of New York’s campus on February 19-20.

Pianist Harold Mabern will be at Smoke for the New Drum Battle on February 20th-22nd.

Art Historian Kellie Jones will be at Columbia University’s Low Library in the morning of February 21st for a panel discussion on Romare Bearden’s “Odyssey”.

Pianist Marc Cary‘s residency at the Cell Theatre continues with late sets on February 21st.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at Nico’s Kitchen and Bar in Newark NJ for a jazz brunch on the 22nd.

Bassist Alex Blake leads a Quartet at Zinc Bar on the 24th.

Bassist Reggie Workman and saxophonist Oliver Lake will be at the Village Vanguard on February 24th-28th as part of TRIO 3.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter will be at The Turning Point in Piermont, NY on February 28th.

Harpist Brandee Younger will be at Minton’s in Harlem on March 1st.

The Arts for Art organization’s (promoters of the annual Vision Fest) artist response to the Black Lives Matter movement continues through the 30th at Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side. Dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker and trombonist Dick Griffin (who will be showing his visual art) will be among the many artists and performers there.

Pianist Marc Cary‘s 5-week residency at the Cell Theatre continues on January 31st, running on Saturday evenings through February.

Harpist Brandee Younger leads a quartet and saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin leads her Soulsquad at the Met Museum of Art’s “Jazz and Colors” event on January 30th. If you miss that show, you can catch Younger at a free show at the Queens Public Library’s Central Branch on February 1st.

Looking ahead, you have a rare opportunity to catch multi-instrumentalist Charles Gayle on saxophone, bass, and piano with guitarist Marc Ribot at The Stone on January 28th.

Also on the 28th, keyboardist John Medeski is at the Village Vanguard.

Looking further ahead, saxophonist Pharoah Sanders will be at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from January 29th to February 1st.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake will be at Roulette in Brooklyn on January 30th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen has a free show at the Sugarcube pop-up performance space at South St. Seaport on January 31st. Admission is free but you can reserve a spot at their website.

Finally, looking even further ahead, Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter will be at Treme in Islip, LI on January 31st.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at the Jazz Standard with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane’s group from February 3rd through 8th.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz joins Eddie Henderson’s quintet at Smoke from February 6-8th.

Poet Abiodun Oyewole will be at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on February 7th for “Afro Horn”, a tribute to Henry Dumas.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is one of many guests at Jazzmobile’s rescheduled 50th anniversary concert on the 21st hosted by WBGO Radio’s Rhonda Hamilton at Harlem’s First Corinthian Baptist Church.

Vocalist René Marie will be at 54 Below on November 21st -22nd.

Bassist Christian McBride is at Newark’s NJPAC on November 22nd with Béla Fleck and the group Brooklyn Rider.

Blues singer Alexis P. Suter will be at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on November 22nd.

Pianist Harold Mabern returns to Smoke with the Steve Davis Sextet from November 28th-30th.

You have two chances to catch Blues singer Alexis P. Suter and her band. They’ll be at BB King’s on August 25th and have a free outdoor concert in Ridgefield CT’s Ballard Park on the 28th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell appears at City Winery in a tribute to Billy Preston on August 26th.

Vocalist Diane Schuur will be at Ocean City NJ at the Ocean City Pier on August 27th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor concerts on the horizon. He appears at Marcus Garvey Park for a tribute to drummer Max Roach on August 29th as part of the Jazzmobile series. On September 7th, you can see with the Ascension big band at the White Plains Jazz Festival in downtown White Plains NY.

Trombonist Steve Turre is at the Stone on August 30th as part of a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Blue Note from August 29th to 31st.

Looking ahead, also appearing at the Blue Note, is drummer Billy Cobham, celebrating 40 years of his landmark Spectrum album from September 2nd to 7th.

You can catch harpist Brandee Younger at the historic reopened Minton’s in Harlem on September 7th.

This week’s show is a memorial tribute to the late bassist Charlie Haden. But we have an expanded set of live music listings for you this week.
There are several opportunities to catch bassist Mimi Jones. She’ll be leading a band at The Lion on the 20th and at the Village Vanguard from July 22nd to 27th with drummer Rudy Royston’s Sextet.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria will be appearing as part of the orchestra in a free performance of Larry Harlow’s Hommy: A Latin Opera at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors series in Damrosch Park on July 23rd. He’ll also be leading a band in a free outdoor performance at Grant’s Tomb on July 30th as part of the Jazzmobile series.

Journalist Herb Boyd of the Amsterdam News and pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs will be part of a discussion titled “Post 50′s Jazz, the Artists, the Culture, the Cool” on modern jazz’s development and roots in Harlem on July 24th at the Abyssinian Baptist Church.

Trombonist Steve Turre appears at the Jazz Standard from July 24th to 27th with saxophonist Donald Harrison’s Quintet. Go to jazzstandard dot com for details. He’s also playing an afternoon set at the Caramoor Jazz Festival in Westchester County on the 27th.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on the 25 and has a free outdoor concert in Cold Spring NY on the 27th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th and 30th.

Drummer Bobby Sanabria returns to the WBAI studio as this week’s live guest. You can catch him as part of the orchestra in a free performance of Larry Harlow’s Hommy: A Latin Opera at Lincoln Center’s Out of Doors series in Damrosch Park on July 23rd. Later this summer, he’ll also be leading a band in a free outdoor performance at Grant’s Tomb on July 30th as part of the Jazzmobile series and at a free performance in Marcus Garvey Park on August 13 as part of the Summerstage series. And there are other opportunities to catch music this week.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on July 16th.

Pianist Marc Cary leads the Focus Trio in a free outdoor concert at Bushnell Park in downtown Hartford CT on July 14th.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts leads an ensemble at Iridium on July 18 and 19.

Blueswoman Alexis P. Suter is at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY on July 19.

Lastly, looking further ahead, Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Village Vanguard from July 22nd to 27th with drummer Rudy Royston’s Sextet.
