Drummer Jeff Tain Watts leads a quartet at the Jazz Standard from September 24-27 and returns with Yosvany Terry on October 8-10.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from September 23-24.

Saxophonist Rene McLean is at Smoke with a Jackie McLean tribute from September 23-24.

Bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Pat Metheny are at NJPAC for a performance and conversation on September 27.

Percussionist Steve Kroon will be at Brooklyn’s First Baptist Church of Crown Heights for Jazz Vespers with the Jeff King Band on September 27.

This week’s guest is vocalist Lizz Wright! You can catch her Freedom and Surrender album release show at Highline Ballroom on September 10. And we have lots more music for you this week, so let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at Jersey City’s Newport Tower for a free outdoor show at 12 noon on September 9.

Pianist Randy Weston is at New School’s Tishman Auditorium for a performance and talk on September 10. It’s the kickoff event for his yearlong residency, so look for several more events over the course of the year.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions on September 10 and 17 at The Gin Fizz.

Vocalist Lizz Wright is at Highline Ballroom on September 10.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on July 12. Until then, the big news this week is the kickoff of this year’s Vision Festival. If you missed last week’s show, now’s a good time to hit our our audio archives, since it was a preview of this year’s Vision. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

We wrap up this week with your 20th Vision Festival round-up. Sunday July 5 features films at Anthology Film Archives and there’s a conference on Monday July 6 at Columbia University’s Buell Hall at 116 and Broadway. Performances run from Tuesday July 7 to Sunday July 12 at the historic Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Sq South. And you can hear Douglas R. Ewart, William Parker, Patricia Nicholson Parker, The Sun Ra Arkestra with Marshall Allen, Craig Harris, David Murray, Charles Gayle, Joe Daley, and many more. We’ll have a full preview in a separate post and ongoing coverage here. WBAI radio is proud to be a media sponsor of the festival this year.

Pianist Barry Harris kicks off Jazzmobile’s season with a free outdoor concert at Grant’s Tomb on July 8.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has two free outdoor shows in the Bronx. Catch him at Co-Op City with Antionette Montague on July 8 and with Asencion at Middletown Road and Stadium Ave in Pelham Bay Park on the 10th.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the Jazz Standard with vocalist Charenee Wade on July 8.

Arts for Art’s monthlong “Our Earth/Our World” festival of musicians, poets, and visual artists continues at at Clemente Soto Velez Center on the Lower East Side.

WBAI Radio is a media sponsor of Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium’s month-long jazz festival from April 17-May 17 at various Brooklyn locations.

We start with another ticket giveaway for the final event in the Schomburg Library’s Women’s Jazz Festival on March 30th! We have two tickets left for the show with saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin‘s Soulsquad and vocalist Catherine Russell. Details at their page and sign up at the post on our blog for the free tickets.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake is also a visual artist and has an exhibit of his painted sticks at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art in downtown Newark NJ until May 21st.

Bassist Christian McBride leads his big band at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from March 31st-April 5.

Randy Weston will lead his African Rhythms Sextet with bassist Alex Blake at the Jazz Standard from April 2nd-5th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet with bassist Mimi Jones at Smoke from April 3rd-5th.

Pianist Harold Mabern’s trio celebrates the release of their Afro Blue CD at Smoke on April 10-12th.
