Bassist and vocalist Mimi Jones is at the Bronx Museum for the Arts on September 16.

Saxophonist Claire Daly is at the Central Jersey Jazz Festival at the Somerset County Courthouse in Somerville on September 17.

Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis is at the Children’s Magical Garden (at 129 Stanton St in Manhattan) for a free outdoor concert as part of Arts for Art’s InGardens series on the 16 and at Roulette in Brooklyn on the 18.

Bassist William Parker’s In Order to Survive ensemble with drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake is at Le Poisson Rouge on September 21.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Aché at Floridita Restaurant in Harlem on September 22.

Finally, pianist Barry Harris leads a trio at the Village Vanguard from September 19-24.

Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at Brooklyn Bowl on September 23.

Bassist and vocalist Richard Bona is at Club Bonafide on September 23.

Drummer and percussionist Andrew Cyrille is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on September 26 with Bill McHenry.

Saxophonist Pharoah Sanders is at Birdland from September 26-30.

Vocalist Thana Alexa is at the Jazz Standard on September 27 and is joined by drummer Antonio Sanchez.

We’re off the air this week (and recovering from the Vision Fest), but head over to our archives if you missed last week’s show with saxophonist Kidd Jordan. WBAI Radio’s officially wrapped its Spring Fund Drive and thanks to those who pledged! If you didn’t get around to it, it’s not too late to pledge online snd even a few dollars helps a lot. Now let’s get to those listings.

WBGO Radio has a visual art exhibit featuring works produced by musicians. It’s on view at their studio in downtown Newark NJ and features the work of Will Calhoun, Mino Cinelu, Dick Griffin, Oliver Lake, Carmen Lundy and others. Saxophonist Oliver Lake will be performing for the reception on June 8.

Director John Scheinfeld’s John Coltrane documentary film Chasing ‘Trane is playing at Cinema Village in Manhattan (closes June 8), the Picture House in Pelham (June 9-15), and Time and Space in Hudson (June 10-11). See our review of the film for a preview.

Director Casper Kollin’s Lee Morgan documentary film I Called Him Morgan is also playing at Time and Space in Hudson (June 8-9) and the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville on June 15. We’ve got a review of that, too.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at The Blue Note on May 30-31 with pianist McCoy Tyner.

Saxophonist Kamasi Washington is at Brooklyn’s McCarren Park on June 8 as part of the Northside Festival.

Guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Antonio Sanchez are at the Beacon Theater on June 10.

The Sun Ra Arkestra led by saxophonist Marshall Allen is at Union Pool in Brooklyn on June 10.

Vocalist Thana Alexa and bassist William Parker are both at the Red Hook Jazz Festival on June 11.

Bassist/vocalist Richard Bona is at Club Bonafide on June 10 and 17 with Mandekan Cubano.

This week’s show continues our Vision Festival 22 preview coverage with saxophonist Kidd Jordan, who you can catch at Vision on Friday June 2. V22 opens at Judson Memorial Church on May 29 and runs through June 3. Scroll down for details and our annual preview is on the way.

The big event on the horizon is this year’s Vision Fest. It starts on the May 28 at Anthology film archives and moves to Judson Memorial Church from the 29-June 3 with nightly performances of jazz, dance, poetry, and visual art. In addition to William Parker and Cooper-Moore, you can see drummer Hamid Drake, poets Carl Hancock Rux and Jesus Papoleto Melendez, TRIO 3 with Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille and Oliver Lake; and saxophonists Charles Gayle and David Murray. There’s also a conference on June 1 at Columbia University sponsored by the Center for Jazz Studies and a new series of after hours sets starting at midnight at Nublu.

WBAI Radio returns as a media sponsor of this year’s Vision Fest.

Bassist Mimi Jones hosts a jam session in the late set at Smoke on January 23rd and 30th. You can also catch her leading her own sextet at Monmouth University in New Jersey on February 4th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on the 18th.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun has a CD release event for his Elvin Jones tribute at the Blue Note from the 24-26. Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane joins Calhoun as special guest on the 24th.

Drummer Andrew Cyrille is at the Whitney Museum on January 27th for the Sound and Colors studio session.

Master drummer Michael Carvin is at St. Peter’s Church as part of a musical tribute to the late vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson on the 28th.

Tubist Howard Johnson is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem for a 75th birthday performance on January 29th.

Bassist Christian McBride is also at the Jazz Museum to talk about his recording career for part 1 of the Session Stories on January 31st.

Vocalist Carmen Lundy is at Birdland from January 31-February 4 2017.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. This week’s show concludes our 2017 2017 Winter Jazz Fest coverage with return visits by low brass specialist Joe Daley and Ruth Cameron, Charlie Haden’s widow and producer of several Haden albums. The Liberation Music Orchestra closes the Winter Jazz Fest on Tuesday January 10 at Le Poisson Rouge with pianist Geri Allen as a special guest. Ruth Cameron will be part of a panel discussion right before the show in the same location. Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 21st. You can see our review of the Winter Jazz Fest right here later this week. Now on to the rest of the week’s events.

Also at the Schomburg Center is film director Carol Bash for a daytime talk and screening of her Mary Lou Williams documentary film The Lady Who Swings the Band on March 23.

Bassist Mimi Jones leads a band at Smoke from March 24-25.

Also at Smoke is saxophonist Billy Harper who finishes off the week with The Cookers from March 25-27.

Arts for Art’s Justice is Compassion series runs from March 26th to April 10th at Clemente Soto Velez Center with performances by bassist William Parker and dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker.

Poet Sonia Sanchez reads at The City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall on March 31 before a screening of the documentary film Baddddd Sonia Sanchez.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on March 31, The Turning Point in Piermont NY on April 9, and at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on the 16th.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at at the Jazz Standard from March 29-April 3.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Keep up with us via Facebook, the blog here, or our main website, or Twitter and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

This week’s guest is vocalist and pianist Amina Claudine Myers. She has no immediate area shows, but we’ll keep you posted. However, we have lots more music for you this week.

The Mavis Staples documentary Mavis! airs on HBO on March 7 at 11:05 PM EST and on HBO’s streaming sites until April 3rd.

The documentary film Baddddd Sonia Sanchez airs nationally on PBS affiliates on March 8th. Check your local listings for rebroadcasts and details.

Drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note from March 10-13 for a 91st birthday celebration with guitarist Pat Metheny as a special guest.

Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Pregones Theater in The Bronx on March 12th.

Drummer Will Calhoun is at Iridium on March 12th with Vernon Reid’s Power Trio.

Looking ahead, bassist William Parker is at The Stone on March 16 with Angelica Sanchez.

Vocalist Thana Alexa leads a group at the Jazz Standard on March 16 with drummer Antonio Sanchez.

Pianist Harold Mabern is at Smalls on March 16 and celebrates his 80th birthday at Smoke from March 18-20 with special guests vocalist Kurt Elling on the 18th and bassist Bob Cranshaw on the 20th.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache at Stamford CT’s Palace Theater on March 18th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer has a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) from March 18-31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the Cell Theatre on March 19th.
