This week’s guest is drummer/percussionist Will Calhoun who gives us the inside scoop on his new release in honor of Elvin Jones! You can catch him in a free outdoor show on Friday the 12th at Marcus Garvey Park as part of the Jazzmobile series or with Living Colour on the 17th in a special acoustic set at City Winery or, at the Afropunk Fest in Brooklyn on the 28th. Pianist Randy Weston leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake at the Jazz in the Valley Festival in Poughkeepsie NY on August 21st. If you miss them there, they’ll be at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Marcus Garvey Park on the 27th.
 
Trombonist Craig Harris is also at Jazz in the Valley Festival on August 21st.
 
Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads the Multiverse Big Band at Grant’s Tomb for a free outdoor performance as part of the Jazzmobile series on the 24th.

This week’s guests are poet and author Quincy Troupe and Margaret Porter Troupe. Pianist Vijay Iyer hosts a listening party at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on the 15th and starts a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) from March 18-31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.
 
Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the Cell Theatre on March 19th.
 
Pianist Randy Weston celebrates his 90th birthday at Carnegie Hall with bassist Alex Blake and the African Rhythms ensemble on March 19th.
 
Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is at the the NYPL’s Schomburg Center for a Women’s History Month jazz program on the 21st and Toshi Reagon wraps up the the series on the 28th. Tune in to our March 20th show on WBAI for a ticket giveaway for both shows!
 
Also at the Schomburg Center is film director Carol Bash for a daytime talk and screening of her Mary Lou Williams documentary film The Lady Who Swings the Band on March 23.

Arts for Art’s Justice is Compassion series runs from March 26th to April 10th at Clemente Soto Velez Center with performances by bassist William Parker and dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on March 31, The Turning Point in Piermont NY on April 9, and at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on the 16th.
 
Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at at the Jazz Standard from March 29-April 3.

We’re off this week, but back on air on March 6. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention WBAI’s Winter Fund Drive that’s continuing for another week. A donation — even a small one — in the name of our show will help enormously. And there’s always live music going on, so let’s dive in.
 
Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from February 29-March 1 with Gerald Clayton.
 
Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on March 1 in the last of a series of shows with pianist McCoy Tyner. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch him and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s classic band in action.
 
Also at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club is saxophonist Tia Fuller who leads a quartet including bassist Mimi Jones on March 2nd.
 
Guitarist Marc Ribot is at Lincoln Center’s Atrium on March 3 for a free concert with with Los Cubanos Postizos and the same ensemble will be at Le Poisson Rouge on the 4th.
 
Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache in two lunchtime performances at NJPAC in Newark on March 6.
 
Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Pregones Theater in The Bronx on March 12th.

We’re (finally!) back on air this week with guest Jessica Edwards, director of the Mavis Staples documentary Mavis! It’s screening at City Cinemas’ Village East in Manhattan until February 25th and will be on HBO later in the year. We have six individual tickets to give away for the screenings this week, graciously donated by Village East Cinema.
