The Mavis Staples documentary Mavis! airs on HBO’s streaming sites until April 3rd.

Pianist Vijay Iyer has a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) until March 31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.

Toshi Reagon wraps up the Women’s Jazz Festival at the the NYPL’s Schomburg Center on the 28th. The show is sold out, but we’re giving away a pair of tickets. WBGO Radio host Rhonda Hamilton and vocalist Dianne Reeves will be speaking at Newark (NJ) Symphony Hall in a ceremony celebrating the release of a new postage stamp honoring Sarah Vaughn on the 29th.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria takes part in a celebration of the music of the Dominican Republic at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 28th and Manhattan School of Music’s Borden Auditorium on April 4th.

Arts for Art’s Justice is Compassion series runs from March 26th to April 10th at Clemente Soto Velez Center with performances by bassist William Parker and dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker.

Bassist Mimi Jones leads a quartet in a free concert at Rutgers University Newark’s Paul Robeson Student Center on March 30 and will be at WBGO Radio’s studio in Newark as part of a free screening of the films Seeking Hope and The Girls in the Band on March 31.

Vocalist Dianne Reeves is at Carnegie Hall on March 30.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter is at Iridium on March 31, The Turning Point in Piermont NY on April 9, and at The Record Collector in Bordentown NJ on the 16th.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at at the Jazz Standard from March 29-April 3.

Saxophonist Kenny Garrett is at Western Connecticut State University on April 2nd.

Saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders is at Birdland from April 5-9th.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Village Vanguard from April 5-10th.

Organist John Medeski is at The Blue Note from April 5-10th with John Scofield.

Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith leads his Evolution ensemble at in a CD release party at Brooklyn Bowl on April 6th.

Film director Carol Bash is at Rutgers University Newark’s Institute for Jazz Studies for a talk and screening of her Mary Lou Williams documentary film The Lady Who Swings the Band on April 6th.

Drummer Michael Carvin leads a trio in a free lunchtime concert at Newark’s Gateway Center at 12 noon on April 7th.

This week’s guest is Chris Becker, author of Freedom of Expression: Interviews With Women in Jazz. He won’t be in New York for a while, but we’ll let you know when he’s due for a visit and reading. However, we have lots more music for you this week.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria leads Quarteto Ache at Stamford CT’s Palace Theater on March 18th and leads the Multiverse Big Band at the Bronx Music Heritage Center on the 19th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer hosts a listening party at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on the 15th and starts a residency at the Met Museum’s new Breuer Building (that’s the former Whitney Museum) from March 18-31 and will be performing or curating performances during all of the museum’s open hours.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman is at the Cell Theatre on March 19th.

We return to the air this week with our final preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest featuring guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer!. You can see him on January 15 the New School University’s auditorium as part of the the Winter Jazz Festival. Now let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

Pianist Vijay Iyer is at The Stone on the 13th with Matana Roberts and also leads a trio at this year’s Winter Jazz Fest.

Guitarist Julian Lage is at Cornelia Street Café on the 13th and at the Winter Jazz Fest’s closing event on the 17th.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller leads a quartet at Smoke from January 13-14.

Also at Smoke is saxophonist Billy Harper, who leads a quintet from the 15-17.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs leads a trio at BAM Café from January 13-15.

Vocalist Kurt Elling is at Birdland performing songs from his Passion World release from January 13-16.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz leads a quartet at the new Cassandra’s Jazz Club and Gallery in Harlem from January 13-16 and 22-23rd.

Vocalists Lizz Wright and Dee Dee Bridgewater are at BB King’s on January 15.

Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 16th.

The Harlem Jazz Parlor Festival hosts trombonist Craig Harris on January 16 and low brass specialist Joe Daley on the 18.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane will be at the John Coltrane House in Dix Hills, LI on the 20th.

Vocalist René Marie is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from January 21-24.

Saxophonist Gary Bartz is at the Blue Note on the 25 with legendary pianist McCoy Tyner. They’re also there on February 1, 15, and March 1. Tyner’s been less public lately, so it’s a good idea to catch one of these dates and see the last remaining member of Coltrane’s band in action.

Also at the Blue Note is legendary drummer Roy Haynes from January 26-27.

Drummer Craig Haynes has an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign to support making a CD and DVD of his band’s performance at the 2016 Dakar Goree Jazz Festival.

We wrap this week with two jazz festivals:

Annual Vision Fest producers Arts for Art’s nearly monthlong “Justice is Compassion” festival continues at Clemente Soto Velez Center until January 24 with drummer Hamid Drake, dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker, bassist William Parker and many more.

The annual Winter Jazz Fest blows back into town this week from the 13-17 with so many past, present (and future) Suga’ guests that it needs its own coverage. Head on over to our annual cheat sheet for a full preview.

This week’s show is a special fund drive edition. Simply put, listener subscribers and supporters keep us on the air at WBAI radio and give us the opportunity to do what we do to spread the word for the music called jazz. The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen returns to Earth on the 22nd at Brooklyn Bowl.

Vocalist Thana Alexa is at 55 Bar on the 22nd.

The New York Chapter of the AACM’s monthlong 50th anniversary celebration continues at the Community Church of New York on E 35th St with performances on the 23rd featuring Steve and Iqua Colson and bassist Reggie Workman. The series concludes on the 30th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 23rd.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has a free show at the Bronx Music Heritage Center’s Night of the Living Dead Concert on the 24th and performs with Gene Marlow’s Heritage Ensemble at the Eldridge St. Synagogue on the 25th.

Drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note from October 24-25th.

Director Carol Bash’s documentary film on pianist Mary Lou Williams, The Lady Who Swings the Band, screens at the ReelSisters film festival on October 25th at LIU’s downtown Brooklyn campus.

Saxphonist Ravi Coltrane is at the Rubin Museum on the 25th and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on the 26th. And Columbia University’s Center for Jazz Studies on November 4th, where she’s joined by Columbia University Professor Farah Jasmine Griffin.

Looking further ahead, poet jessica Care moore has an album release party at the Blue Note on October 30th.

Trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre is at Iridium with a Rahsaan Roland Kirk tribute from October 30 – November 1.

Finally, vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the Apollo Theater on the 31st.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on October 18th. Pianist Randy Weston presents the Gnawa master musicians of Morocco at New School’s Tishman Auditorium for a performance on the 13th.

We mentioned the BRIC Arts Jazz Fest at the top of the segment and there are other Suga’ guests to keep an eye out for. Harpist Brandee Younger has a set on the 15th and organ master Dr. Lonnie Smith leads his Evolution ensemble on the 16th.

Saxophonists Kamasi Washington and Lakecia Benjamin hit Le Poisson Rouge on the 16th in a preview of the 2016 Winter Jazz Fest. Benjamin leads the Soulsquad and Washington’s band performs tracks from his acclaimed release The Epic.

The New York Chapter of the AACM’s monthlong 50th anniversary celebration continues at the Community Church of New York on E 35th St with performances on the 16th and every Friday in October.

Organist John Medeski is at Webster Hall with The Word on the 16th.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at Minton’s in Harlem on the 17th and Brooklyn’s Jazz 966 on the 23rd.

Drummer/percussionist Bobby Sanabria has a free show at the Brooklyn Heights Library at 2 PM on October 17th.

Bassist Alex Blake and WBAI Producer Dwight Brewster are at the Staten Island Jazz Festival with Dr. Mambo and the Experience Ensemble at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on the 17th.

The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen returns to Earth on the 22nd at Brooklyn Bowl.

Vocalist Thana Alexa is at 55 Bar on the 22nd.

Drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note from October 24-25th.

Saxphonist Ravi Coltrane is at the Rudin Museum on the 25 and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on the 29th.
