Director John Scheinfeld’s John Coltrane documentary film Chasing ‘Trane is showing at the IFC Center in Manhattan through Thursday April 27. See our review of the film for a preview.

Also playing in New York City is Kaspar Collin’s Lee Morgan documentary I Called Him Morgan, which has been held over at the theaters at Lincoln Center. You can see our review of that, too.

Trombonist Craig Harris and Saxophonist David Murray are at the Jack Tilton Gallery in Manhattan on April 24 from 5:30-8 PM for a book release party for Butch Morris’s The Art of Conduction.

Vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is at WNYC Radio’s Greene Space for an Ella Fitzgerald tribute on April 24.

Trumpeter Hugh Masekela will be at the Town Hall on April 27th with the Jazz Epistles.

Pianist Onaje Allen Gumbs is at Aaron Davis Hall on the City College of New York’s Harlem campus on April 28th.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads his Diaspora ensemble in a jazz opera titled Sun Ra Returns at Sista’s Place in Brooklyn on April 29th.

Poet Abiodun Oyewole is at the Brooklyn Folk Festival with The Last Poets at St. Ann’s Church in Brooklyn on April 30th.

Saxophonist David Murray leads the Class Struggle ensemble at the Village Vanguard from May 2-7 with trombonist Craig Harris.

This week’s show features bassist Linda May Han Oh. Her CD release event for the brand new Walk Against Wind will be on Wednesday April 19 at the Jazz Standard. Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Smalls on the 19th.

Bassist Christian McBride is at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to talk about his recording and performing career for the third installment of the Session Stories series on April 20 and at Newark’s NJPAC on April 23rd with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding.

Saxophonist Oliver Lake leads a big band at the Jazz Gallery from April 21-22nd.

Looking a little further ahead, drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun is in Montclair NJ at the Wellmont Theater with Paul Shaffer’s band on April 21 and at the Theatre at Westbury in Long Island on April 22nd.

Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. Keep up with us via Facebook, the blog here, or our main website, or Twitter and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

This week’s show features flutist and saxophonist Jane Bunnett. She’ll be at Birdland with Maqueque on the 25th for 8:30 and 11 PM sets.

Pianist Harold Mabern leads a trio at Small’s on the 19th.

Trombonist Craig Harris is at Harlem’s Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church on October 21st and 28th. Saxophonist David Murray joins in as a special guest on the 28th.

Pianist Vijay Iyer will be at the McCarter Theater in Princeton NJ on Oct. 21 and Columbia University’s Miller Theater on the 22nd.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at the McCarter Theater on October 22nd.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun is at Applehead Recording in Saugerties NY for a session with the Zig Zag Power Trio on the 22nd.

Drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria is at the Bronx Music Heritage Center for a Latin jazz tribute to the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe on the 22nd.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads his Diaspora ensemble at Brooklyn’s Sistas’ Place on the 22nd.

Drummer Roy Haynes is at The Blue Note on October 24-25.

Vocalist Kurt Elling is at Birdland celebrating the release of his The Beautiful Day CD from the 26-29.

Also at The Blue Note is saxophonist Kenny Garrett as part of pianist Chick Corea’s Miles Davis tribute from the 26-30.

Pianist and keyboardist Marc Cary hosts the Harlem Sessions at Ginny’s Supper Club on October 27th.

Vocalist Rene Marie is at the Jazz Standard from the 27-30.

Pianist Muhal Richard Abrams is at the Community Church of New York in Manhattan on the 28th to wrap up the AACM New York chapter’s fall concert series.

Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley will be at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on the 29th.

Drummer and percussionist Will Calhoun’s gallery exhibit of his visual art collaboration Aza is on view at the Bronx Music Heritage Center through February 11. We reviewed the show earlier this year.

Allen has teamed with saxophonist David Murray and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington for a combo they’re calling the MAC Power Trio. Their new release is called Perfection. CDs are available for a pledge of only $25.

We’re off the air this week, but catch us next week as we catch up with drummer/percussionist Will Calhoun and get the inside scoop on his new release in honor of Elvin Jones! Welcome to Suga in My Bowl radio‘s weekly feature, On The Bandstand, where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests. We’re online weekly and on the air on NYC’s WBAI-FM radio alternate Sunday nights from 11 PM -1 AM. We’re off the air this week, but stop by our archives to get your fix from nearly 7 years of archived shows until next week. Also see our review of Will Calhoun’s art exhibit on display in the South Bronx. As usual, we have lots more music for you this week.

We start this week with the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium, whose 17th annual jazz festival kicked off on the 15th and runs until May 15th in venues throughout Brooklyn. WBAI Radio is a media sponsor. You can get full information and a schedule from the CBJC by calling 718-773-2252 ext 103.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller is at The Blue Note on the 25th with the Berklee Rainbow All Stars.

AZA, the exhibit of drummer Will Calhoun’s visual art collaboration is on display at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx until July 21st. Calhoun will be at the Blue Note on ~~the 26th~~ May 30th with McCoy Tyner.

Pianist Randy Weston has a busy week. He leads the African Rhythms ensemble with bassist Alex Blake in the Dweck Center of the Brooklyn Public Library’s main branch on the 26th and in a free performance at New School University’s Tishman Auditorium on the 28th to close out his yearlong residency. Finally, Weston returns to the Dweck Center on the 30th for a talk on the African roots of jazz. The Brooklyn library events are part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Looking further ahead, Saxophonist Oliver Lake and bassist Reggie Workman are at Village Vanguard with TRIO3 from April 26-May 1.

Pianist Barry Harris leads a trio in a lunchtime set at St. Peter’s Church on April 27th.

Drummer Billy Cobham is at The Blue Note from April 27-May 1 with Donald Harrison.

Drummer Kim Thompson leads a quartet at Zinc Bar on the 29th.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah leads his DIASPORA band at Sistas’ Place on April 30. This event is part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Pianist Geri Allen is at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club on April 30 with Joe Lovano.

Saxophonist and EVI master Marshall Allen makes a rare non-Arkestra Earthly appearance with two sets at The Stone on April 30.

Low brass specialist on tuba Joe Daley is at The Stone on May 1 for the early set and at Terra Blues with Hazmat Modine on May 7th.

Vocalist Kurt Elling, bassist Christian McBride, and vocalist Dianne Reeves all lead groups at the Prospect Park Bandshell on May 7 as part of the GRAMMY Park festival.

Pianist Michele Rosewoman leads her Quintessence ensemble at Zinc Bar on May 5.

Organist John Medeski is at The Stone on May 6.

Finally, The Red Bull Music Academy has a night of spiritual Jazz featuring Pharoah Sanders, the Sun Ra Arkestra, and Kamasi Washington on May 8. The event’s listed as sold out, but details are at the Red Bull Music Academy site and there may be a wait list.

Bassist Alex Blake and WBAI World of Jazz host Dwight Brewster are at Staten Island’s The Gallery on the 22nd. This event’s part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Drummer and visual artist Will Calhoun is at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education in the South Bronx on the 22nd for a performance and reception to open the show of his visual art, which is on display until July 21st.

Pianist/vocalist Andy Bey is at Mezzrow from the 22nd-23rd.

Guitarist Pat Metheny returns to the area for a series of shows with bassist Ron Carter. The duo are at Norwalk CT’s Infinity Hall on April 20-21, Cape May NJ’s Exit Zero Jazz Fest on the 23rd, and Newton NJ’s Newton Theater on the 24th.

Also at Exit Zero is vocalist René Marie, who takes the stage on the 23rd.

Poet/vocalist Latasha Nevada Diggs hosts a free tribute to the late poet Jayne Cortez at Highline Ballroom on the 23rd.

Saxophonist “Sweet Poppa” Lou Donaldson has a free outdoor concert at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education Rooftop in the South Bronx on the 23rd.

Jeff Lieberman’s The Amazing Nina Simone documentary film screens at the Lower East Side’s Metrograph Theater on the 23rd.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Ginny’s Supper Club on the 23rd.

Percussionist Steve Kroon is at the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights for Jazz Vespers on the 24th. This event’s part of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Saxophonist Tia Fuller is at The Blue Note on the 25th with the Berklee Rainbow All Stars.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week: we’re back on August 9. Until then, our our audio archives have you covered for your Suga’ fix. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs, including a few free outdoor shows in the dog days of summer.

Bassist Christian McBride is at the Jazz Standard from August 4-8, leads a big band at the Litchfield Jazz Festival in CT on the 9, and Montclair Jazz Festival in NJ on the 15th.

Bassist Mimi Jones is at the Village Vanguard with Rudy Royston’s Trio from August 4-9.

Saxophonist Ahmed Abdullah is at Harlem’s Rendall Memorial Presbyterian Church for a lunchtime concert on August 5.

Saxophonist Steve Kroon is at Newark NJ’s Two Gateway Center (across the street from Newark Penn Station) for a free outdoor lunchtime concert on August 5.

Looking ahead, vocalist Catherine Russell is at Weehawken NJ’s Lincoln Harbor Park on the Waterfront for a free outdoor concert on August 5 and at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club from August 13-16.

Pianist/keyboardist Marc Cary is at Harlem’s Ginny’s Supper Club for Abbey Lincoln birthday special shows on August 6.

Finally, legendary drummer Roy Haynes is at the Blue Note August 11-12.

Drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts is at Iridium with Network Trio from August 13-16.

Suga in My Bowl radio presents a new weekly feature, On The Bandstand where we collect upcoming NYC area shows from current and past Suga’ guests.

Program note: Suga’ in My Bowl has changed to a biweekly schedule on WBAI Radio and now alternates Sunday nights with Sports Qualified at our usual 11 PM -1 AM time period. You’ll get the same great show; just every other week! So mark your calendars or just keep up with us via our Facebook page, the blog here, or our main website and we’ll keep track of the schedule for you.

Suga’ in My Bowl is off the air this week and will be pre-empted next week for the winter pledge drive. Join us on air on Sunday March 8th. To get your fix until then, check out our our audio archives. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some upcoming gigs.

We start with our own event this week: On February 18th “Who Owns Music?” lands at Harlem’s Raw Space for an exciting discussion between bassist William Parker, writer/poet Quincy Troupe, WBGO Radio’s Sheila Anderson, Grammy nominated vocalist René Marie, Ahmed Abdullah, Music director of Sista’s Place and hosted by Suga’ in My Bowl’s Joyce Jones and Hank Williams. It’s a fundraiser for WBAI Radio. Admission is $15 at the door. More details at our site.

Carl Hancock Rux’s play “Stranger on Earth” based on writer James Baldwin’s words has shows at HarlemStage on the City College of New York’s campus on February 19-20.

Pianist Harold Mabern will be at Smoke for the New Drum Battle on February 20th-22nd.

Art Historian Kellie Jones will be at Columbia University’s Low Library in the morning of February 21st for a panel discussion on Romare Bearden’s “Odyssey”.

Pianist Marc Cary‘s residency at the Cell Theatre continues with late sets on February 21st.

Vocalist Catherine Russell is at Nico’s Kitchen and Bar in Newark NJ for a jazz brunch on the 22nd.

Bassist Alex Blake leads a Quartet at Zinc Bar on the 24th.

Bassist Reggie Workman and saxophonist Oliver Lake will be at the Village Vanguard on February 24th-28th as part of TRIO 3.

Blues vocalist Alexis P. Suter will be at The Turning Point in Piermont, NY on February 28th.

Harpist Brandee Younger will be at Minton’s in Harlem on March 1st.
